I could never get into customization in any game, so he always helped me. I like working with set teams. This is probably why I could never play card games either. Pokemon is so deep of a game. It's awesome.
The last one I played was Diamond, and I couldn't finish it. But I at least finished the stories on the first the generations. ( מּ,_מּ)

Fatman X. Jones: how does one set up a gym? What can be configured? Do trainers earn exp by defeating the pokemon, or is it like online battles? I played the tar out of Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, so maybe I can explain. In GenIII Hoenn, you can set up a "Secret Base" for your friends to find. Since the original versions were GBA only, you could only do it with local friends and not over the internet. After you set up a secret base and "mix records" with up to four friends in Hoenn, a number of things happened. I'll go pull a list right now. I'm not going to go into detail, but if you want more info, check here.- Naturally, all present Secret Bases (even from past record mixing) become available to everyone. You can battle players you find after you beat the Pokemon Champion.
- You'll occasionally see television shows with names of your friends mentioned.
- The Mauville Pokemon Center Man changes. He's an odd fellow. More can be read on him here.
- The Storyteller is another NPC in the Mauville Pokemon Center that gets altered upon mixing as well.
- Pokemon Fan Club dialogue gets altered based on whom you mix records with.
- The Feebas Factor gets adjusted (I never fully understood this, but it's worth looking into because Milotic is such an awesome Pokemon.)
- You could possibly encounter friends in Battle Tower. You have a chance to encounter them at their highest streak battle. (If they survived 45 battles, they could be your 45th challenger.)
Fatman's a pretty rocking sprite artist from what I'm lead to believe, so he could be glorifying a simple Pokemon Battle. It's not a bad thing though; I like looking at a little spice as much as the next person. I could never get into customization in any game, so he always helped me. I like working with set teams. This is probably why I could never play card games either. Pokemon is so deep of a game. It's awesome. The last one I played was Diamond, and I couldn't finish it. But I at least finished the stories on the first the generations. ( מּ,_מּ) Might be for the best. I can't vouch for sure as to whether or not Black / White , Black / White 2, or X / Y are worth getting too fussy over. But since I absolutely loved Generation III before it turned all cool in Generation VI, I can definitely say for sure that this one's worth getting. I may even transfer all of my Platinum Pokemon one at a time over so I can at least be decent for battling. That's how much I'd be willing to get up to speed with Generation VI just because of Hoenn.

Interesting info, especially the bit about the Battle Tower. I played Emerald, but I never experienced these things because I had no local friends to mix records with. I wonder what changed in the new versions.

I wonder what changed in the new versions. My only friend was myself... ... *ahem* I didn't know a lot of people who played Pokemon on GBA in my local area, so internet support that came coupled with Generation IV was much needed. It looks like they may have just nixed mixing records altogether, and now you can use them nifty QR codes to unlock people's bases one by one instead. Oh yeah, and it's my guess that Nintendo's getting better against fighting off cheating machines, because I never found any Action Replay Codes for White or White 2, and in order to transfer Pokemon from generation IV to generation V, they couldn't be holding items. So although I can breed pr0 Pokemon in HeartGold, I can't transfer any items along with the Pokemon, which is a bit of a disappointment. But uhh. Yeah. I think I may be spoiling a bit of the storyline for myself because I stumbled across an off-topic thread in a completely unrelated forum that had a little something to do with Mega Rayquaza. I threw out some Poke-prowess in that thread too, but still. *whistle*

Both my GBA and my game are second-hand items. I bought them around 2008, when probably no one else was playing GBA anymore .

Alright, in the order you asked:
How does one set up a gym? You set up a gym by merely having the team of Pokemon you want to use in your party when you create your Secret Base's QR Code, simple as that. Anyone you invite into your Secret Base as a Secret Pal (done by finding their Secret Base and asking their player representation) will also have their party available to battle.
What can be configured? You can set up the specific rules with an item called a Proclamation, which you get from Aarune in the Fortree City Secret Base Guild (the treehouse on the bottom-right of the city, it has a flag sign). With the Proclamation, you can set if you do Single, Double, Triple, Rotation, or Inverse Battles in your Secret Base. You can have up to three Pokemon for Single Battles, Four for Double, and Six for the rest, I believe. Furthermore, an item you gain called the Level Release, obtained after clearing the main story and talking to a man in the Battle Resort (unlocked after clearing the main story), will allow you to release the level limitations in your Base, allowing you to battle with Pokemon beyond the default (which I believe is 50). However, there is one rule you cannot change: You can only battle a trainer's party once per day.
Do trainers earn exp by defeating the pokemon, or is it like online battles?
YES! You do gain EXP for defeating the Pokemon of a trainer in their Secret Base.
So there you have it. It's not an official gym, mind you, but some people from Reddit, 4chan's /vp/ board, and other Pokemon fans on the internet took to calling it that like flies to vinegar (which does catch more flies than honey, believe me, I've checked). And yeah, I may be glorifying it a bit, what with my spriting and all, but c'mon, who wouldn't if they had the skills? XD

With advancement in Secret Base Rank thanks to collecting over 100 flags, I've finalized my Secret Base! Meanwhile, in the main game, I'm doing my great Mega Stone hunt. All but two of them shall be mine, hopefully, in the next few days; The Lucarionite is a reward for the Contests, which I'm not doing at all past acquiring Cosplay Pikachu (which I've done now; LUCHADOR TWITCH IS FIVE STAR FROG SPLASHING EVERYTHING), and the Garchompite might take me a while, as it requires 1000 flags collected from Secret Bases. (Luckily you can take the same flag from other people's secret bases over and over again, once each day, so that helps considerably.) Oh dear merciful lord. Smogon has banned Mega Rayquaza from the Ubers tier, and made a new tier: ANYTHING GOES.Source: Smogon

The Lucarionite is a reward for the Contests, which I'm not doing at all past acquiring Cosplay Pikachu I know there are people that love these contests, but I could never understand how they work. I never got anywhere in the contests from Emerald. I completely ignored the ones in Platinum, and in Gen V, Pokemon Musicals are simply ridiculous. Let's see if I'll have the patience to try to understand contests this gen.

I was able to understand contests in generation III and had a lot of fun with them; especially with beating Master ranks so that my Pokemon could appear as art in the art museum in Lilycove City.
I hope they adopted contests similar to generation III's for ORAS.

They did, Mikey. It's still five classes: Cool, Tough, Beautiful, Clever and Cute, and they still go from Normal > Super > Hyper > Master. The twist this time is, well... actually, there aren't many twists; If your Pokemon can Mega Evolve, has its Mega Stone, and gets the audience up to five stars, they'll Mega Evolve, stunning the audience even more and getting them more points... but that's about it. The character you'll be rivaling in the Contests, Lisia, is Wallace's niece (partnered with an Altaria), and for winning them you still get your Pokemon in the art museum. For completing all five Master Rank Contests several times and beating Lisia in them, she'll give you the Lucarionite as a reward. As for Cosplay Pikachu, I'll explain: After you clear your first Contest, a Pokemon Breeder in the Contest Halls will give you a special Pikachu with a black heart on the tip of its tail. It can't breed, nor can it evolve, and it can't be traded, but it can equip costumes based on the five Contests as a pseudo "Forme Change" and gain a new move it couldn't learn anywhere else. For instance, mine has the Libre costume on, making it a true luchador, a Masked Wrestler, giving it bonus points in Tough contests and allowing it to use the move Flying Press (which is itself pretty powerful, being the first Pokemon move that's both Flying and Fighting type). Pikachu Libre is objectively the best costume. HE STANDS FOR THE PRINCIPLES OF LUCHA LIBRE. HONOR. FAMILY. TRADITION. DONUTS.

Yes! My game just arrived! On Rockman's birthday, no less! (I don't know about other places, but here it's still the 17th) Yuna's journey begins! ... Expect another crazy fan fiction to come out of this!

I've pretty much beaten AS now, and my current objective is leveling up Pokemon. I've been using a set of six Secret Bases for it that I call the Peninsula of Power-Leveling: A Secret Meadow outfitted with six Secret Bases each containing a Triple Battle against 3 lv. 100 Blisseys. With Lucky Eggs and the EXP. Point Boost O-Powers I get around 40k-50k experience per Blissey, quickly leveling my 'mon up.
I've currently got three Lv. 100 Swamperts on my team, one of which was my starter in AS, one of which was my starter in a SoulSilver solo run, and one of which is my very first Swampert from Sapphire years ago. (I even have a Time Travel Award for that last one hanging up in my Base now.) They pretty much all know the same things: Ice Punch, Muddy Water, and Hydro Pump, with some moves differing because I'm working on matching them up.

Is that meadow something you constructed yourself, or was it community designed? I'm worried that I might make a secret base where someone else's is too; is there any clear cut mechanic that adapts for that, or does the old friend's base just get overwritten?
Well, I now officially own Omega Red, but I won't get to play it at all today until I finish Secret Santa stuff, so life's a buzzkill. If there's anything I should know before I start Fatman, lemme know. I have multiple resources and junk that I can use for transferring Pokemon, just as long as a regular DS and 3DS can communicate for that to happen. If not, I guess I'll have to use main-story Pokemon.

The Meadow itself was made, it seems, by some Japanese players and posted on the Pokemon Subreddit on Reddit. As for overwriting, if you obtain Secret Bases by scanning the QR Codes, it won't overwrite the bases you scan when you receive them by Streetpass or passing players on the PSS in-game. Mechanic-wise, I will say if you want a more difficult game out of Omega Ruby, DO NOT USE THE EXP SHARE WHEN YOU OBTAIN IT. Only use it if you think you need some EXP badly. By the way, I got mineself an Eon Ticket from a McDonalds this morning when we stopped on the way to my grandmother's house. Getting a Latios while I chowed down on a Southern-Style Chicken Biscuit with Cheese was the best part of my morning, hands down. (Also, unrelated note, try that. It's delicious.)3DS to DS communication and trading is somewhat weird. If you want to port a Pokemon from, say, the original GBA games to OR/AS, you have to do the following: - With at least one DS and a copy of Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/Heart Gold/Soul Silver where you have the National Pokedex, migrate a Pokemon to D/P/Pt/HG/SS using the Migrate From [game] Option.
- With at least two DS-capable systems (DS/DSlite/DSi/DSiXL/2DS/3DS/3DSXL) and a copy of Black/White/Black2/White2 where you have the National Pokedex, PokeTransfer at least six Pokemon including the one from the GBA games via the PokeTransfer Download Play application.
- With a Pokemon Bank account ($5-ish for a year of access) and the downloaded PokeTransporter application for 3DS, as well as a copy of Black/White/Black2/White2 with the Pokemon you want to port in Box 1, migrate your Pokemon to your Pokemon Bank storage via the PokeTransporter application.
- Finally, with Pokemon Bank and a copy of X/Y/Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire where you have at least 2 Pokemon and the initial Pokedex, migrate your Pokemon from Pokemon Bank to a PC Box in X/Y/OR/AS.
And that's how to transfer Pokemon. For GenIV and GenV 'mon, pick up from Step 2 or 3. If you decide to do all this with, say, a Pokemon caught in Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald, then once you've beaten the Elite Four in OR/AS you can speak to the Game Director in Lilycove City's hotel to recieve a Time Travel Award you can display in your Secret Base via decorating.
