Revengance looks really good! I was a bit nervous about a Metal Gear title being handed off to another developer, but even with the shift in gameplay focus, this one looks promising.
...though, if Quinton Flynn does that faux-Hayter gravelly crap through the whole game, that might be a deal breaker. The voiceovers in Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale are nothing short of painful to sit through.

About an hour or two in, and I actually like the deeper voice of his. Besides, Raiden's JP voice (Horiuchi Kenyu) was originally pretty deep to begin with, and it was only around the production of MGS3 that US dubbing was kept in-line by Japan's team probably to add continuity.

I'm a pretty big MGS fan but Rising really doesn't do it for me. There's just not anything I like about it.

"Metal Gear" (MG1, MG2SS, MG Ghost Babel) was a top-down stealth action game. "Metal Gear Solid" (MGS/I/VR/TTS, MGS2/S, MGS3SE/S, MGS4, MGSPO/+, MGSPW, MGSGZ/PP) is generally Tactical Espionage Action. "Metal Gear Acid" (MGA, MGA2) is a tactical card game. And now "Metal Gear Rising" is an action hack & slash. And I haven't even counted Social Ops and Arcade as their own categories. So while a Metal Gear fighting game* will have to wait again, I for one welcome the new genre entry to the MG Universe. * Though I can settle for Dream Fighters TV Mix and Smash Bros.
Update: Gray Fox DLC was worth it. Also, the Fox Blade+ is absolutely broken yet glorious at the same time, being able to slash through everything except for Bosses without having to weaken them down first.
Since I can't buy it here, has anyone here seen the plasma lamp included in US's Limited Edition package?

That picture doesn't seem to work but I looked up the lamp and it is pretty cool. Maybe you can help me like this game HF. To me the biggest problem about this game is the story. Personally, I thought MGS4 ended perfectly and that setting this game after it was a big mistake. I can't see how you could make a meaningful story about Raiden after his ending with Rose and little Jack. The whole 'he's doing it to pay the bills' thing is just a dumb excuse for him to be fighting still. Perhap if his family was killed or something I'd be more excepting of him getting back in the saddle. It seems like setting the game after MGS4 gave them little room to make a significant and meaningful addition to the story and plenty of room for failure. Personally I see this game (relating to the story) highly unnecessary.
How does the game deal with Raiden's family? Does it really make sense at the end? Is it a good follow up to MGS4? Is the story close to as good as main series games? In the grand scheme of Metal Gear does the story really add to the franchise?
EDIT: Also, is the grey fox DLC story related or just a weapon/armor pack?

Well... trying not to spoil too much of this game: To be fair, Raiden/Jack's work up until the events of the game were mostly security (i.e. he isn't expected to slice up armies on a daily basis); it's a pretty reasonable job option if you're a highly advanced machine from the neck down. In fact, it's even implied that he never had to actually engage in conflicts until the Winds of Desperado started their schemes. Around halfway into the game, Raiden states that Rose will understand why he has to jump back into the conflict, especially since the events leading up to his rampage is eerily similar to his own troubled past. It may just be Flynn's voice acting, but the way he put it implies that he and Rose have already reached a mutual understanding unlike the infamous domestic drama of MGS2. As for Little John, well, he'll probably think the same thing. As for the whole "new story" thing: MGS marked the end of Solid Snake's story, and now this game and the ones to follow in the MGR Series will focus on Raiden and his own set of struggles, and perhaps the beginning of something else entirely. As such, I am unable to see how starting a completely new story after one has ended to be conflicting; KojiPro and Platinum Games aren't staffed by idiots, and their track record attests to such. Story-wise, MGR feels like "MGS-lite"; the story is obviously focused on being fast-paced with lots of cliches (pulled off amazingly, though), but spend some time on the CoDec conversations and you'll feel the MGS-esque storytelling MGS fans should be familiar with: Technology advancements, moral values, ideals, philosophies regarding trans-humanism, etc. The Gray Fox DLC is just a Skin/Weapon pack that does not affect the story. However, the Samuel and Bladewolf DLC involves their stories prior to the main game's events. Edit:

where be my snake, and why is he being overshadowed by a super cyborg ninja...and why is everyone becoming a super cyborg ninja....and when did their technology go from advanced but clunky to super advanced and sleek...i dont like it. The technology of the Metal Gear universe has always been a bit skewed. Keep in mind that Raiden was already a cyborg during MGS4. Rising takes place four years after the events of MGS4, so it's easy to imagine that the cyborg technology has been improved upon since then. As for the whole "everybody is a super cyborg ninja" statement, that's not true at all. Most normal cyborg enemies come nowhere close to Raiden's mobility and strength. The only exception to the rule are the bosses, seeing as they're using custom, top-of-the-line cyborg enhancements, as opposed to the standard-issue stuff that most mooks are sporting. And even then, they're still a bit behind Raiden. Now. I believe that it's time for MGR to receive some love in this thread. Having beaten the game a few days ago, I can say that Rising is totally worthy of the Metal Gear moniker. It isn't stealthy, sure, but the game is called Metal Gear Rising, not Metal Gear Solid. It's not trying to be a stealth-based game, thus the change in title. So please don't moan about its different style of gameplay. The action was awesome, the musical score was fitting, adrenaline-pumping and memorable (RULES OF NAAATUUURE), and the story was engaging, yet simple. My only two gripes are the game's overall length, and how easily the parry skill can be exploited. Still, the technical issues can be easily fixed. And as for the final boss... Ooooooh boy. I don't want to spoil anything, but it's bat-shit insane.

@hf, Thanks. That makes me feel a bit better about the game but I still don't find the game to be very unnecessary to the story. I mean I don't see why they thought Raiden needed one more game after all of his problems were seemly resolved in MGS4. It seems like making a game for making a game sake. I don't really think there is much justification besides 'we wanted to make a cyborg ninja Raiden game so we made a superfluous story around it.'
By 'the grand scheme of Metal Gear' I ment does this story feel significant in relations to what happened in the other games? Snake's story might be over but really all the other conflicts the games ever centered around are over too. I guess that's why the back of the box says 'A game set in the MG universe' instead of a MG game.

Zaiy: As a wooden swordAs Kyle pointed out, the whole point of MGR is precisely because it's the beginning of a whole new era of the Metal Gear Universe; it's just this time the game is a (highly technical) hack & slash game. In fact, that's what makes it so much more refreshing than having yet another stealth game more akin to previous experiences. I'm sure enough people complained about Solid Snake being overly acrobatic in The Twin Snakes, so he's clearly not the character for an action game. Both previous Cyborg Ninja characters were too short-lived to make a full-blown story with, and Raiden was clearly the best choice. Loken: By design, it shouldn't be significant. However, reading between the lines (i.e. CoDec) explains a lot regarding how the world became so advanced in cyborg technology, including the implications and impacts it has caused to modern society, some even going as far back as Peace Walker. Then again, it would be much more effective if you just played the game. I'm trying to not spoil it, after all.

So please don't moan about its different style of gameplay. And no one's stopping you from playing through the non-combat parts with stealth either. The cardboard box and barrel's still there for fun times. If I had to pick one track, that crazy guitar from "The Stain of Time" won me over quickly. But damn, heavy metal actually worked wonders for this game, not to mention how the Boss themes made a transition from an instrumental to their Image Song halfway through their fights. Too bad about the length as well, but here's hoping for a sequel. Maybe in the next one you can hijack UGs... Also, this one scene.

I really want this game, but my money has to go into real life stuff at the moment. I've heard nothing but praise from people that have played it for its game mechanics and making very good use of a dynamic soundtrack on top of that.
