But I see the statement currently being made: that there's no clear, viable reason for the heroine's name change. Wasn't it said somewhere that the name change from Aero to Sephira here was because of a miscommunication? Yes. When they changed the name, they said it was because Capcom Japan meant for the name to be Sephira instead of Aero. But Capcom Japan never changed the name at all, as you can see on their side of things, and based on this poll in the first place. >__< Since then, they haven't given another explanation. So, either they're lying to us, or for some reason Capcom Japan wants there to be this inconsistency in the localization of the game. o__o;

So it's possible that they want the name to be different overseas? If that's the case, then that's their decision, once worked out. This also wouldn't be the first time that a company responsible for an original game or anime has asked for a different name in the overseas version of it. (Example) Hetalia: Axis Powers - The character representing the U.K. was known as England in Japan, but when Funimation licensed the anime series, Studio Deen, the creating company, asked that Funi. changed England's name to Britain.

VolnuttChan Sorry, I should've been clearer. That is what they said, but I don't think it's really the case. I'm pretty convinced we're just being lied to. Why? I have absolutely no idea. But I can't imagine why Capcom Japan would want us to have a different name in the localization, and order it to be so. If they did, I'm just as curious to know what their reasons could possibly be in that case. I don't mind if they use either name; I'd just like to see some sense made of this change. Where's that option in the poll? :07:

Where's that option in the poll? :07: I can't imagine a reason either, if it's an action similar to the Hetalia change, but on that case, the name change was for historical accuracy as far as I can tell: During WW2, I think the U.K. was known mostly as Great Britain, so in keeping with the setting for Hetalia's "storyline", that's why they may have changed the name. Legends 3, however, holds no reasons clear enough for the heroine's name change. There's no storyline connected to Aero/Sephira, save for her part in Legends, so there's no telling what the reason is. But I'll stick with my earlier comments: I don't care, I couldn't care less, and I just want to see Legends get made without any little-dynamite-turns-to-big-TNT drama.

My point is that they're odd names, yet the fandom accepts them with their sanity intact. Err.. right. The fandom accepts them because there's an explanation behind them. You think the fandom only accepts the names because of the puns? That's not so. There are a lot of fans that don't know the puns even exist. To someone that only played Megaman Legends without an in-depth knowledge of the history of the franchise or the way the names sound in Japanese, there is no "Rock and Roll" and there is no "Trombone", there's only Roll and Tron, and they still accept those names without batting an eye. Ultimately, names don't matter and the audience gets used to whatever is given to them. If wordplay were important to Roll and Tron retaining their names in both languages, then Megaman would be Rock. The people who make name changes don't care about preserving the wordplay. Like I said, Roll and Tron are just lucky Capcom's translators didn't get the idea to rename them Lucy and Midge. And before you fire back with something like "they wouldn't change Roll's name for MML since she's based on a classic character of the same name" I'm talking about name changes in general so Roll could have been Lucy back in 1987 too. Not that earlier localizations even necessarily affect newer ones, as many characters in the latter Battle Network games like "Japanman" and "Spoutman" could attest to. To sum up: you're saying Roll and Tron are bad examples of my case against name changes because they had a reason to stay unchanged, and I'm saying name-changers don't need any reason to do anything. They change names, some good, some bad, some weird, none necessary. Edit: I feel I should mention that the Battle Network series went a long way towards building up my name-change bitterness. I was fine with it at first, as long as they stayed consistent with themselves, but they couldn't even do THAT right.

I was fine with it at first, as long as they stayed consistent with themselves, but they couldn't even do THAT right. This pretty much. Not only were the name changes often done for dumb reasons (Japanman? Really?), they often contradicted the names they already had in America, be it in Robot Master form or otherwise. You'd see Aquaman in Battle Network 4, only to have him re-appear as Spoutman 2 games later for a really dumb reason (I doubt DC comics will sue over that). The 4Kids dub didn't really help that case much either, as certain Navis were re-named for censorship purposes, while their game incarnations stayed the same. It's pretty easy to get thrown off if you don't know what you're doing.
As for the Aero/Sephira thing, I'm pretty much neutral on the name itself. Neither one really sounds better or worse to me, and this honestly seems like a really trivial issue that makes me wonder why CU made a poll for it in the first place.

Just got on the site and found this. I voted for Aero. No particular reason. I didn't really care too much for one way or the other.

It's pretty much trivial in every sense, if that makes sense itself. While American game and anime companies have been pretty sketchy in the name-changing part of licensing properties (as Raijin's pointed out with the Battle Network dillema + 4Kids and their issues), Japan's been sticking to the names of other properties pretty well. But this whole problem tosses everything around and gives no reason for the error. Sidenote: I've also finally gotten my Servbot number, so now I'll be able to help out on Dev-room events!

Thh, Aero seems to fit better, but I'm far from heartbroken.

…Plus, Inafune said he doesn't like the name "Mega Man", and I like to support him. Well Inafune also said that he considers Zero to be the " real" Mega Man X, and as much as I respect the guy, I could never support that notion.. But I see where you're coming from and couldn't agree more. As for the topic, it's totally arbitrary.. Neither Aero nor Sephira really sparkle to me so, que será será..

I've come to like both names, but I voted for Aero because that's the name they told us, and was the one I got used to first, even if it was for a short time. As for name changes in general, I don't like them if they are unnecessary. If there is a reason (and not a stupid one), then I don't mind.
I like it better when characters, especially protagonists, have official names. I don't mind having the option to name your party members in a game, but I always try to name characters by the closest "official" or commonly used fandom name possible....it just makes it easier to refer back to them.

I really liked Lilly though. But it was temporary after all.
I don't know what to vote though. I like both names...

I thought the chicks name was going to be Lily. Well, if they did mess it up, I'm not too worried about it. Whatever they give us when the game comes out is what we have to accept anyway.
Aero = Zero Sephira = Sephirah
The perfect human race will go down by the Rage's hand. *sneaky eyes*
Also Capcom has the stick with the shorter names way for the female types.
Roll, Aero, and Tron are all four letter words. I like consistency. Plus their initials spell out the word RAT.

I personally prefer "Sephira" because it sounds more like a name than "Aero". But of course in the Legends universe "Aero" matches better, so I don't mind what they choose for her final name.

Although it was a difficult choice, I've decided to vote for Aero as I found that name to suit her; giving her design and all.
