There are no prizes.
...
Pumped up? No? I didn’t think so. THAT’S ALL RIGHT. WE CAN DO THIS.
And I’ll try to keep the intro brief this time. Pinky promise.
What is this? It’s our annual holiday art exchange, of course. Why do we do it? Well, a few reasons.
First, we hope that by doing this we will, in some small way, help to foster a greater sense of generosity and camaraderie amongst those who participate. This may sound trivial and terribly cheesy, but in a world where every good deed seems to come with an increasing number of strings attached, it never hurts to be reminded now and then that not everything in life is a transaction. And so, we present this as an opportunity to do something nice for someone else, with no promise of anything in return. (There's a chance the person assigned to you won't be able to finish, after all. And that's fine.)
Second, we want to present people with a chance to challenge themselves creatively. How? Well, this is optional and based entirely on the honor system, but we ask that everyone who participates make his or her submission using a style or medium that is unfamiliar to them. Maybe you’d like to take a shot at realism, or using watercolors, or emulating the style of that one artist you like but have never tried emulating before, or maybe there’s a new painting program you’d like to give a test run. The choice of how you’d like to challenge yourself is entirely yours to make. And if everyone does this, it also has the added benefit of diminishing the importance of individual art skill, as everyone will be working outside of their comfort zone. This is good because we don’t want it to be an issue here as much as experimentation and the whole generosity thing. So for those less confident in their drawing ability, please don’t be shy, and certainly don’t be afraid of messing up. Most of us will be doing it.
And thirdly, we want to generate some new Legends art to show around these here interwebs. More DASH art can never be a bad thing, right?
In summary, give someone a nice surprise, and learn something new in the process. Then, when it’s all over, we can all gather around the art gallery and congratulate each other on a job well done.
And finally, as per tradition, there are a couple of little novelties participants get a piece of for taking part. Not prizes, per se, but it should spice thing up a bit. All artwork submitted by the deadline will be circulated on the front page of the Legends Station main site, and everyone who submits will be given one of those little badges to wear below their display names (crafted this year by none other than Chiz).
Now, the specifics. All times are EST because that’s what the forum clock goes by, if I remember correctly.
1. Sign-ups. Everyone who wishes to participate must announce their intentions. Could be on this thread, or over PM, or what have you, as long as we know you’re on-board. Along with your intention, give a brief description (5 words is the suggested max length, but anything thereabout is fine) of what you want your gift art to be of. The reason for the briefness is so that the person who gets your request has more room to interpret it. Makes for a bit more of a surprise for you, we reason, and for a bit more of a challenge on their part. No description at all is fine as well, if you really want to be surprised. Signups end on Dec. 12 (next Sunday).
2. Drawing period. After signups end, we’ll go through the list of participants and randomly match everyone up with a request. You’ll then have until the 19th at midnight (the following Sunday) to complete your piece and send it in. Again, we ask you to challenge yourself by trying a style or tool that you are unfamiliar with, but it’s not strictly enforced or anything.
Regarding the content of the image, the requests, and your medium/style of choice, we’re leaving it pretty open-ended. As long as it’s not X-rated, can be viewed as a stand-alone 2D piece, and is Legends-related, we’re good. However, if you yourself do not wish for content such as nudity or gore in the art you requested, feel free to say so. We’ll ask that your wish be respected. In any case, please do think about the person you are giving your gift to and what it is that they might like, even if they do not say explicitly. It is a gift and all. Also, no fan characters or crossover requests, please. This way, people won't be forced to look up information on franchises or fanwork they are unfamiliar with.
Also, you may optionally submit a 700x400 thumbnail or crop of your finished image in addition to the finished image itself. These are the ideal dimensions for display on the main site. If you submit this 700x400 piece, we’ll use it as the front-page display. Otherwise, we’ll take a crop/thumbnail of the finished image ourselves.
3. Starting on the 20th, the thumbnails/crops of the submitted images will begin circulating on the main site, because we’re into theatrics and like building anticipation. Late submissions will still be taken at this point, but please do try to make the deadline.
4. The reveal. At midnight on the 24th, all the gift images will be posted up on this thread so that everyone can view them in the morning all traditional like. Please do not post your finished image anywhere before then; it'll ruin the surprise. They're all yours afterwards, though.
And of course, if anyone finds themselves unable to submit their final piece for whatever reason, be it that something unexpected came up or they just didn’t feel like doing it, please let us be civil about it. In fact, it’s safest to expect from the get-go that you won’t get anything; someone inevitable does not, after all. But it’s really not that big of a deal. Remember, giving and love and all that. Try not to take things too seriously is all I ask.

... But, on that note, there is one final challenge we’d like to try offering this year for those feeling daring. As I said, every year at least one person has ended up giftless because of someone else not being able to come through with their art. We do not blame those who could not finish, of course. And those who have not received a gift have been excellent sports about it. All in all, everyone’s been in top form in the last couple of events as far as the generosity and civility stuff has gone. Now, here’s an opportunity to pay back the patient souls from years past who never received anything.
- Mr. Ninja: Data Hijacking Gesellschaft
- Mr. Ninja: Mega Man Legends Christmas Card
- Razor_Guardian: Juno Trigger Midair Clash
- Milkman: Smile for the camera
- Dragge: Bola and Klaymoor on a ledge looking at the viewer
- Tau: Mother Units Spare Time, no mature content
- Blues: Battle Royale: Diggers vs. Pirates
Above is a list of requests from previous events that have gone unfulfilled for whatever reason. And here is the challenge:
In addition to fulfilling the request that you receive this year, also fulfill at least one of the Secret Santa requests from a previous year that never happened. Any of them. All of them. Your choice.
What will you receive in return? The satisfaction of giving gifts to the ungifted, the artistic challenge, and a special version of the SS ’10 forum badge.

Questions, comments, and suggestions are all welcomed. And if there are any special cases you’d like us to consider, please don’t hesitate to bring them up.
Now go forth. Be generous. Be artistic. Make someone smile.
Signups start now.
