Dashe has a point there. Especially near the end of the game, understanding Data was vital for plot furthering. Of course, it could be that Data only speaks a gibberish language that only Mega Man can understand. As far as communicating goes, there's always the possibility of crude sign language.

You know what, I think that may be true. Data may very well have the ability to speak in English, as he could interpret Roll's command to make food in the begining of MML2 in the flutter. I mean, he might occasionally speak in gibberish, but I'm pretty sure that said gibberish isn't his only form of communication, like Bon. I mean, Trigger could understand him, Tiesel, Eden, and I'm fairly certain that both Roll and Tron could as well, but, as I said before, chose not to as they were busy arguing over the design of the rocket.

I don't think Teisel, Tron, or Roll could really understand him...they were probably just desperate for that technology that they tried to talk to the monkey, and he responded in gibberish.
As for being able to talk to Eden, Eden is a part of the System, and Data is (eventually) a product of that system, so thus he should naturally be able to exert some form of an ability to control it.

Well, they've never said anything about them NOT being able to understand him so, you can't omit the idea just yet.

Yes they have. They consistently reiterate that ONLY MEGA MAN can understand Data, and everyone else just hears pointless gibberish. So therefore, Teisel, Tron, and Roll CANNOT understand Data.

MML1 Instruction Booklet:
"Data
A mechanical monkey who has been at Mega Man's side ever since he was found. Data only speaks in gibberish, and Mega Man is the only one who can understand him."
Right here. ^_^ And they seem pretty definite about it, too. I've always assumed that as you are playing Mega Man, you as the player can also understand what Data is saying, too.
What confuses me is this:
Data: I'm your Peripheral Memory Storage Device! You originally created me so your memory couldn't be scanned by Mother Two!
By Mother Two, he must mean Sera. Mega Man wanted him created so that the information and memories he had of the Master couldn't be deleted or tampered with. This kind of fits with the "Only Mega Man can understand him" theory. But when Mega Man suffers heavy damage from his battle with Geetz aboard the Sulpher Bottom, Yuna uses Data to help regenerate and heal Mega Man, and as she does this, she is able to read all the information Mega Man had stored on what happened right before the Master died.
So if only Mega Man can understand Data, and he only speaks in gibberish, then:
a.) How could the Eden computer system understand him? Surely if the System could, then both Mother Units would be able to.
b.) Data was designed specifically so that Mega Man would be the only one able to access the information stored in him, and, in particular, stopping Mistress Sera from tampering with it. If this is the case, how come Yuna was able to utilize it so easily?
Weird.

Well to answer B, Trigger may have told Data (before resetting himself) that if the situation were to ever arise, then he should deliver the information, as opposed to having someone else access it.
As for A, he may have spoken in such a speech that only Trigger and Data could interprate, not necessarily every unit in the System.
And besides, I'm sure that the other units understand that Trigger shares a compassionate side with the Master, they just don't know how to go about achieving this sense of understanding, as they've been raised to only accept orders from the System. So in other words, I'm sure that they know what it is, they just don't know how to do it.

I wonder what the Japanese illistrations say about Data. Perhaps we can find out more from Japanese sources?
Anyone got a clue?
Also I find it odd that at the end of MML2, before Roll & Tron argue, Tron knows Data's name. ("You stay out of this, Data!")

Hmm, that's true.. Well, Roll may have just told her I suppose, or maybe she overheard Trigger referring to him as such or something, but still.. It's also strange how if people can pick up names so quickly, why Trigger still referred to Joe (a common name) as "mister", when he found him in Yosyonke's ruins..

I hate it that Data doesn't do his disco dance anymore, he just seems to wobble his arms....That killed the character and humor in data for me.

I actually don't think that his little dance really matters all to much, he's cute nonetheless, and besides, MML2 made him have a rounded look, thus making him seem realistic. Unlike MML1's blocky pentagonal head thing..

According to my sister, the Data Dance made MML for her. It's kind of strange how I never noticed he stopped in MML2. What happened between the two games that made him stop, anyway? Did Mega Man tell him that his dancing was really embarrassing or something?

Well apparently, anything could have gone on between MML1 and MML2. Trigger and Roll suddenly grow in height, Roll's hat fits, Trigger goes through reverse puberty, Trigger gets some strange, unnecessary backpack thing, etc.

I'm pretty sure he keeps his kram in that backpack. It's a hobbit's only source of nourishment on his uneventful, 50 page long treck across uninteresting hills and feilds.
He does actually still do the dance occassionally, just not when you talk to him to save. For instance, he still does the dance when he jumps up in front of whoever's piloting the Flutter in that one cutscene near the beginning of the game. I seem to remember Megaman piloting it for some odd reason. I can't remember why though.
