What if Megaman Legends didn't have Megaman, Roll, any mentioning of a Megabuster, or things pertaining to the Megaman Universe? Would this game still be as fondly remembered and have a cult following as it does today?
To be honest, I think most of the reason that the game was put on the map in the first place was because it had Megaman in it to begin with, plus it was his first 3D adventure, and come on, why wouldn't that garner attention? Without Megaman, this game could have very easily have fallen into obscurity if it was a new IP. Who knows! Maybe that's how it started out, and the folks at Capcom were nervous about releasing a game with a new IP and just said "put Megaman in it, people love him." After all, Megaman was pretty popular in the nineties... I think?
But I wanna hear your guys opinions on this topic here. :>

Without Megaman, it probably would've just been "Legends" and Barrett may have been born early.
Can't say it'd be quite the same, but if Aero and Barrett were to handle the main storyline, it probably wouldn't have ended up too different than the way it is now, if Barrett was considered the strange baby found in ruins whom was actually once a robot.
...
Yeah, no. The game would be complete mush without Megaman. It makes sense to have him there for the stuff that doesn't make sense because the timeline isn't finished yet.

I was talking more about in terms of the game itself being remembered, and not stuff like the Megaman timeline, but you do bring up a point. I wonder what other plot points in the Megaman timeline could be connected with the addition of other games. Interesting that you brought up Aero and Barrett being the protagonists without me even mentioning them in the post, cause I was thinking the same thing. If Megaman and Roll wasn't in the game, then my first choice to replace them would of been Aero and Barrett, and for the obvious reasons.

As an icon, it's hard for me to say. His armor definitely stands out, and I'm not sure if I can imagine someone with a different build and / or different color-choice in armor being the main protagonist.
Although, as a young me, if I imagine "Action Man" being in place of Megaman... Yeah. I can still see the storyline being memorable. It's just a matter of growing up with it. Action Man was another little ps1 game that I had at the time along with Legends 1. Both Action man and Megaman Legends disappeared one day, and I haven't seen them since.

I asked Inafune about that, actually. That was in September of 2013. Check out the copypasta below: I asked it because I was wondering if the Mega Man brand hadn't been slapped on by the execs during development, too. Apparently not. I can't figure out why it was conceived as a Mega Man game, but there you have it. Who knows, he might have been really going for some epic tie-in later. For some reason he likes this series best, too. Maybe it's got something to do with that tie-in we don't know about, or maybe he just has good taste. Maybe that should be the next thing I ask 100k to ask him.

Well, if the game didn't have Megaman attached to it, I probably wouldn't have played it at all. When I first picked up MML2, it was due to recently being introduced to the franchise via MM8, and I was eagerly lapping up anything with the Blue Bomber on the box. I think having the Megaman monicker both helped and hurt the game. The game is called "Mega Man Legends", and it features a blue bomber paired with a girl named Roll, but in terms of gameplay the series is its own entity. I'm sure plenty of folks picked the game up thinking it'd be an expansion of the classic series with Robot Masters and all that, and were disappointed. On the other hand, the name helped to draw people in for what was a great game set in a unique world. If the game was released by Capcom without the Megaman franchise attached to it, I think it'd still have a decent cult following, but it'd be lumped together with the other obscure Capcom titles.

I think it could have spawned a great new IP without megaman, but since it was that specific time in the nineties, I don't think it would have sold well without the name. If it waited until the sixth gen, I feel it could have sold amazingly as a new IP.
I believe that lost planet ended up being a gameplay reboot, stylistically being very different. It ended up being like a sci fi Monster Hunter type of game, focusing on multiplayer. That's kind of what I had hoped legends 3 would have been, and that's kind of why I play MH and LP. Neither of them fulfill exactly what I'm looking to replace with legends, but together it's alright.

Umm, this game already is an obscure Capcom title. You gotta remember, we're talking about Legends here.

Given the influences behind the Halcyon Days setting, I can imagine this game being designed and written by Ghibli starring a pair of siblings exploring ruins and suddenly finding themselves caught up in a multi-faction race to uncovering an ancient 'treasure'.
The final confrontation would probably be Musuka, who will have his eyeballs burnt out again by appearance obligation.

Well the game would be the same. I didn't really care about Megaman before Legends so it wouldn't have changed anything for me. It really is just a great game with alot of interesting details and a spirit of adventure. Really I havn't found any other game that has the same feel as this one. Kattelox is an infinitely entertaining place and the people that live in it make it feel alive.
Now would there be such a demand for Legends 3 if Megaman was not the star? That's hard to tell. I think this place would still exist but the support we get from the other MM fans probably wouldn't.
One thing we would really lose is the neat lore that Legends adds to the MM series. It's essentially kind of a post-apocalyptic utopia maintain by remnants of the past that keep populations in check. There's alot of mystery that connects this game to the others and it makes the whole universe more interesting.

Didn't know much about the MM series when I first played it, so I'm up there with Loken. Actually, I'd sorta prefer if Legends didn't have "Megaman" attached. The only noticeable changes would be the design of Volnutt's armour and main weapon, the Buster Cannon. Oh, and Roll, but that's not much of a loss for me. The whole inclusion within the MM timeline is pretty arbitrary to begin with, too, since it's so isolated within the future.

The fact that it was a Mega Man game initially made me very skeptical of whether it was any good or not, so same deal here. That's why I'm so curious what it is about it that made Inafune and the developers do what they did, since it clearly wasn't a nudge from the alleged Top Men.

Do you mean to say you don't like any of the other Megaman games? And also, why do I smell a little Indiana Jones?

Do you mean to say you don't like any of the other Megaman games? I'd say that's accurate. I've played most of them. I thought some of them were alright and some of them were boring, but I wouldn't buy them any more than once or join a forum about them, and I've got no love for the Classic series at all. When my cousin first told me about Legends, I thought it would be based on the Ruby-Spears show, which wasn't my style at all. Then I played it and thought for a while that I'd been remembering that show incorrectly until I watched it and realized it was just wishful thinking and the show was exactly as lousy as I remembered.
