Now in topic- from a reploid point of view...the breathing to me was always a cooling system of some kind. Im not really sure if this would fit with carbons though...given their more complex ( ? ) structure. Very likely, not to mention a function to emulate human behavior to aid in social integration (minimize uncanny valley aspects by going that distance into outright realism, improbable body shape explainable by centuries of familiarity so that's not an issue anymore ).
Edit: Another possible reason for breathing in Reploids is function as circulatory support for their equivalent of 'blood'. What do you think?

I still have no idea what the difference is between "carbons", as Juno puts it, "Ancients" and even if humans still exist. I smoothly (accidentally) deleted my MML2 save file yesterday, so I have a ways to go.
