I've always had this thing about getting the best visual quality possible, whether I'm watching a movie (hence my love for Blu-Ray and lossless audio) or playing a great video game like Mega Man Legends. Now I'm sure not all of you can afford a super-expensive audio-video setup, but this thread is for discussing the best ways to enjoy the Legends games, as well as sharing how you experience the games.
I'm under the impression that the best way to play this game and get the maximum quality visuals as well as audio is by the following:
- Playing the original disk in your Playstation 3 system
- Having a large HDTV (1080p, be it LCD, Plasma, or LED-LCD)
- Upscaling the game with shaders (smoothing filters) on, but not stretching the image (keep it in full screen). These options are done within the PS3 home button pause menu in-game, or in the Game Options on the Home Menu.
- Sending the HDMI signal (no composite or component cables will be used here!) to your HD receiver, which in turn sends the video to the TV and the audio to your high-quality speakers.
* Speaking of audio, I'm not entirely sure what kind of audio encoding or channel setup the Legends series used, or the PS1 series of games for that matter. I'm guessing a decent lossy compression with stereo channels. Either way, I would LOVE to hear the Mother Area theme or Calinka Island theme where you are just outside the mines being blasted off of a good surround system. /drools
Now this setup is very expensive. It is basically a setup for high-quality gaming in general for any modern system, and a gamer's dream. I don't have the speakers or receiver, but I do have the PS3, HDMI connection, and 40-inch 1080p LCD HDTV, and my goodness, the games look INCREDIBLE. Sure, there's pixelation, but sitting just 5 feet back when the shaders are on makes the game shine like never before. The detail is grand. This will have to suffice until we get an HD remake series 20 years from now.
So then, how are you all playing your Legends games? Do you still have your old SDTVs? What size and how is the visual quality? Do you use built-in speakers, headphones, or a sound system (like part of a home theater)? Do you play on your PS1? PS2? PS3? PSP ports of Rockman Dash? Emulator? And speaking of emulators, some of the graphical enhancements that emulators use could potentially make Legends look even better (widescreen hack and hi-res textures, anyone?). But for now I think the best and most stable method of playing these timeless classics is on the PS3.
