So, I know a few of us play Minecraft, and the old thread's buried and dead, and best not to gravedig, so. Minecraft discussion thread! Talk about the upcoming 1.5 Redstone Update, the various mods and texture packs out there, what you're doing in your single-player saves, what you're doing in multiplayer servers, post photos, link videos, that sort of thing, and have fun! For example, I've been playing on the Feed The Beast modpack, a more officially-sanctioned modpack counterpart of the popular Technic Pack modpack. FTB and Technic both specialize in technology advancements and industrial content additions to Minecraft, though FTB is more generally accepted by the creators of the mods used in it because it gives them credit. This pic is from my single-player save with FTB Lite, a lightweight modpack that is great for smaller servers, which I customized further by adding a mod named Legend Gear (which adds lots of Zelda-inspired items to the mix). Here, the Athame dagger from the mod RedPower 2 is nestled snugly in a Legend Gear sword pedestal. An Athame is a great weapon to craft, taking only a Silver Ingot and a stick, and is effective against Endermen: Two strikes can fell an Enderman cleanly and precisely. As to why I'd put it in a pedestal, well, why not show off to the monsters that threaten you the most that you've got their number?

I haven't dabbled with Minecraft mods for a few months now. The last time we had a server up, Equivalent Exchange ended up turning everybody into demi-gods. Good lord, that mod was a massive gamebreaker. I think we also had RedPower 2, IndustrialCraft and some other mod that I cannot recall the name of.
What I do remember though, is the Athame Dagger. My basement had a horrible Enderman infestation, so that weapon was just a godsend.

I wouldn't mind having a casual play server make a reappearance. It's just one of those things that I don't fully appreciate until it's gone, and it always manages to make me feel kinda bad when it does. With the... regular-game server data that Chiz or JMC has, I would like to make a beacon a longish-term goal to work towards. Or any other nifty late-game addition that they may have added in the newer versions. As for mods, I'm not really a big fan; outside of ones that enhance convenience of the original game, usually in the form of minimaps and treefallers. Buuut that's just me. In that massive techno-server Kyle mentioned, I mostly dug to bedrock then virtually fell out altogether, since the graphical lag really ate me up, and the overabundance of new ores and items was a bit overwhelming. I will admit though, it was a bit nice looking at how the base evolved over time... after the multitude of Creeper-abuse that the original village-base took. But anyways. I haven't forgotten how much of a challenge hosting can be. With that in mind, I usually just tell myself that maybe it'd be better not to ask. I usually do support anybody else that has a gnawing urge to play on a server from time to time though. I like Minecraft, but it's not really a game that I like to play by myself. Heck, I can't even really bother to keep myself up-to-date on it unless there's a local MMLS SMP server up and running. Witch Huts? What the heck are those?!

For those that want a bit of backstory for this, I initially tried to host our (read: Mikey, Kyle, Trege, and I) server on my home machine. However, it's not terribly powerful, so running a vanilla server is a challenge (let alone a modded one). Specifically, my machine was not powerful enough to spawn any decent amount of mobs. Nights were basically safe, even in the dark, in the middle of nowhere, without protection, etc. So I had the bright idea of...altering the mob spawning rules, to "encourage" mobs to appear. By removing the limits, I could actually coax the server into producing a small number of thises and thats nearby. Mostly on Kyle's front lawn. When I convinced JMC (who has a slightly more powerful computer) to host for us, I had neglected to return the mob spawning rules to their original levels. The result? JMC's much more capable server had a field day spamming everything everywhere it could. Every night in the main base had 2 dozen spiders and a legion of zombies and creepers at the gates. Kyle's laboratory was constantly swamped with endermen (although I counter that that is mostly his fault) and skeletons and zombies were constantly working their way into the base. The problem never really went away, even after our EE2 devices were spitting out the EMC equivalent of a full diamond armour set every few seconds (hence Kyle's comment about gamebreaker). Oddly enough, despite having literally infinite golden apples (or any other food), Avegodro still managed to nearly starve to death. The only saving grace early on was making the front facade from basalt instead of normal stone, providing a lot more blast resistance. As it was, there were so many creepers that the front lawn dissolved away to the extent that the original front entrance became a balcony, and our old basement became the new front entrance.
We're hoping to have another MC server running sometime this week; Feed The Beast 1.2.2-MindCrack, based on MineCraft 1.4.7. The version of EE it has is very alpha-stage, and doesn't *appear* to have any of the gamebreakers EE2 had (or, for that matter, anything of any importance) so it should be okay. Mikey will probably do traditional mining, Kyle will probably set up a technology shop again, and if I'm lucky, I'll be able to dabble in the dark arts!

OHHHHHH no no no, the Mindcrack pack is a bad idea. I'd rather use FTB-Yogcraft, as it's untainted by that dastardly overengineered piece of Schwarbage known as GregTech, which makes the game ridonkulously difficult for everyone, even in Easy Mode. Honestly, where does Gregorious get the cajones to mess with the system and make getting diamonds and endgame stuff so mind-numbingly obtuse? Yogcraft, on the other hand, it also has EE3, as well as Thaumcraft 3, Xeno's Reliquary, and SoulShards, so you can dabble in the dark arts to your heart's content. Compare the packs if you want to.

I figure this is where it goes. I have a small-ish server up, would anyone be interested in joining?

would anyone be interested in joining? I can think of a few people, depending on the answer to this question - what sort of setup are you running with it? Vanilla, modpacks...? Version?

Well, not on the current topic of servers entirely, but it is relevant. On the server that I attend, which, mind all of you, is MLP based, I have made a number of friends, all of which reside in a nice nature-themed town named Whitetail Grove. Very nice people, or rather ponies, they are. But one of the most unexpected friend I have made there just so happens to live outside of the town. I kid you not when I say this, his chosen nickname on the server was MegamanJuno. The chances of encountering a Legends-loving Brony on a random rarely known pony server are rather slim, don't you all think? Me and this guy, best of friends at that moment. We even started a project of recreating Elysium high above the Spawntown. Maybe even equip it with a Reinitialization Cannon just to have the ability to absolutely fuck over obliterate everything below at the touch of a button for our amusement. Perhaps make use of the LWC Plugin to make access to such a thing exclusive to ourselves. Power abuse for the win, I say. And check this out, I made a Ponified HD Juno Skin for him since his default skin was rather lacking in accuracy. Rather impressive if I do say so myself. Link to the Skin fav.me/d67memp

Ah well, that's unfortunate, Sybillian. Kyle and I have grown to love FTB, even with its evil mods; neither of us could see ourselves enjoying a quasi-vanilla experience anymore. Such is life, though, right?
