I know what you're talking about. Part of the reason I don't bother with linux any more these days is that half of the programs I want to use don't work in Wine and/or their equivalent programs in Linux are really not that great. You could go to the trouble running Windows from Ubuntu by virtualization, rather than screwing around with Wine. But that's bound to have its complications too, I'm afraid.

Paint.NET is one of the big reasons I found myself going back to Windows too. I use GIMP from time to time, but it's usually more than I need, and awkward to use for what I want. There is a program that's very similar to Paint.NET for Linux, but it just doesn't work as nicely. Just like many other programs in Linux, there is a wide variety of options, and each of them sucks in its own particular way.
But games? Forget about it. Just in general, it never works the way it should. There's a lot of cool free games for Linux you can install and play really easily, but as for the games you already own from Windows? No such luck.

Wine is Wine no matter what OS it's running on, so probably not.

What about Crossover Games? It's supposed to do the same thing Wine does, but it uses a completely different method.
EDIT: Nice to meet you. I'm a great fan of your work.

Remember that open source software is only free if your time means nothing to you.

Yeah, I love Ubuntu but I rely on Adobe Creative suite so I stick with Windows. Win 7 has improved a LOT in terms of speed etc. and supposedly the next version of Windows will include an app store which is my favorite part about Ubuntu (absolutely hate downloading EXEs and running them in order to update).
Now usually Wine incompatibilities can be fixed by copying DLLs from a Windows installation, and within Windows you can use Dependency Walker to determine what DLLs the MegaMan game needs. Perhaps that can get it working in Wine for you. It seems like the community does a great job at making sure the more popular games work in Wine, especially Steam games.
Thankfully I don't have to abandon my favorite OS completely, I run it on my Cr-48 and my VPS =D

I'm glad I just stick with windows, using another operating system is uncomfortable to me. I've only used a mac and it was enough to make me stay away from other OS's.

Truner, I don't think replacing relying on a tablet for all your computing is a good idea. You can get laptops with 3G. I have a feeling the inability to use a real keyboard or any of the programs you're used to wouldn't be worth the... trendiness of the iPad (are there actually any advantages other than trendiness?) Why do you want to run the PC version? There are PSX emulators for Ubuntu.
