Max does wear them--just not in a standard location. They're tied around his arm like a blood pressure cuff.

White, you've got to be out of your mind. At this rate I'm surprised you just didn't draw me and turn that into an entry. I think I've made a cameo in almost every event you've entered aside from Hetzer. I still might Personally I think a Bat makes no sense honestly, it feels too perfect. From the way they phrase it, The name Bright Bats would come BEFORE meeting the mascot. The way I'm planning, I want the mascot to have obviously fake bat wings, like something Aero made him to make it look more like a fitting mascot or something.

Wow, this thread exploded overnight. Alright so the consensus so far seems to be for a non-reaverbot, mechanical or mechanical-animal (perhaps more mechanical this one is still rather ambiguous as far as consensus goes). I realize everyone hasn't had a chance to place in their input yet, so if there are any major objections to this design path we can revise this selection. If we cut out the purely reaverbot ideas and purely organic ideas (though there are not really any of those) and the joke/taken ideas (hope I am not taking too much liberties here) we are left with:
Physical Characteristics: Major Design Points - A character that has an exterior shell hiding a dark inner something. It would not obviously be alive when Barrett and gang stumble upon it. -is robotic in some way -flies or levitates -non-threatening -a sentient adorable scrap pile -automated spotting machine -a toad -a ferret? -Met -expressive
Minor Embellishments -Wears decorative accessories that make it represent a bat or the Bright Bats (like goggles) -physically glows -has spray painted on Bright Bats logo -put cloths on it (originally proposed if a reaverbot character) -the Bright Bats change its appearance by adding accessories to it (which it doesn’t like)
Personality traits: -Has amnesia (does not even remember name and the Bright Bats choose one for it) -has strong curiosity that gets it into trouble -mute -optimistic -mischievous -female (possibly Jealous of how Aero and Barrett get along?)
Character background: -springs to life after the Bright Bats repair it in the ruins. It later helps them out of the ruin. -tied to Barrell turning into Barrett -actually a system observation unit -secretly holds map data for the island -automated spotting machine -carbon tech that survived previous carbon reinitilization -originally in conflict with the Bright Bats
I propose that we strike things that are not concrete design points (namely expressive and non-threatening) from the physical characteristics section. I think they are important points to keep in mind as we progress with a design, but don't really help guide us as to which path to follow.
Alright so assuming that we want a Mechanical or Mechanical-animal mascot:
If it is purely robotic, do we want a humanoid, animaloid (though still predominately robotic), or totally different non-organic based looking?
If it is more animal like, what type of animal, mammal or non- mammal?
One can only go so far with this dichotomous key type selection, so after this maybe we should throw around some more focused and concrete design ideas.

Well almost all the 'animals' I've seen have been mammals, so we might not want to take that route.
I'm not sure on animal or humanoid.... :21:
We also have to remember that this 'mascot' is going to be Barret's confidant, maybe give it a wise look to it.
I'm thinking pure robotic and no organic on this one.

Oh. I just noticed that my "Stubbles" design is too close to Finkel, which I had completely forgotten about. I've updated my " Darchron" entry a bit. I have yet to do the obvious, some kind of street gang bat with a headlamp or something bright. A bat needing a head lamp... that's a bit of an oxymoron since they probably navigate using other senses. Edit: Experimenting with this one, but I think I need to give it some more character before I proceed.

Oh dang I just had a character design that was eerily similar to that one lol. It was a little figure holding a lantern on a stick, and the lantern had bat wings.

I like the idea of Aero putting fake bat wings on it at least once. That'd be a riot.
I also like the idea of something entirely mechanical or reptilian-looking, in a cute way.

Even though it seems everyone is going in the way of an animal theme, I was thinking that there was the character fAB created for Halcyon Days (I forget the name) that resembled a half-human half-reaverbotish character. Maybe that'll help someone out.

I'm thinking pure robotic and no organic on this one. Yeah, I noticed that too. Mammals tend to be likeable, and thus are the subject of many of the submissions. I think the second most likeable class would be amphibians (especially frogs) or birds, then maybe reptiles and certain insects. If we decide to go the mute character route that could work too for being Barrett's confidant, people tell their pets secrets all the time. I like the idea of Aero putting fake bat wings on it at least once. That'd be a riot. I also like the idea of something entirely mechanical or reptilian-looking, in a cute way. I think that would be rather humorous as well; I wonder if we could put possible plot devices that pertain to the character like this under comments. As for the type of character, personally I also think that mammals have been thoroughly done at CU (plus we have Data). I think a reptile/amphibian or purely mechanical would be nice as well. So perhaps we can progress along this line. Now time to brainstorm what would make a nice robot or reptile mascot character. I have trepidations about posting this because I certainly am not talented in the artistic department and no where near as talented as some of the members here (I especially suck at hands which is why it doesn't have any), but this is something that comes to my mind (or at least by best execution of what cones to mind) when I think of "cute robot." Now, I am not suggesting that this design be used but it was just a example of what a cute robot might be. And indeed I see some several design errors in it myself.

Design flaws aside, I was picturing something more colorful and less anthropomorphic. Something cheery-looking...grayscale just feels so dark and dull for this series.

I agree, I attempted a couple of more colorful plettes and they were all awful (color theory is something else I stink at). But now it looks like we have a vote for non-humanoid mascot, so I guess that's progress.

From what's been said, it sounds like it could be a cat, or a.... That hat isn't just on the construction workers--it's on about seven contest entries from other people already, too, including a really popular cat design. There's already a cat design for this? SH- BLAST!!! ... Maybe it could be a squirrel? With really small goggles for when it joins? (Sorry, my brain's not working much right now...)

Well it couldn't hurt to throw my two cents in. I like the idea of using an animal, a mechanical one would probably fit better with the other mascots. Maybe someone should just list off a bunch of animals...Crab, turtle, lizard, chinchilla, mole, duck....Mechanical or not, I think crabs are so cute, and it would fit with having a mischievous personality, and they come in a variety of colours so you can mess with the colour scheme a lot...but that just might be my undying love for sand crabs talking here. xD
I did want to say that I like the ambiguously female idea. No matter what the character ends up being, I hope that suggestion makes it through to the end.

Is she going to be reptilian, avian, insectoid, mammalian or just a robot with out any animal features?
She isn't going to be a humanoid right?

Is she going to be reptilian, avian, insectoid, mammalian or just a robot with out any animal features? She isn't going to be a humanoid right? I don't know, if i am interpreting her post correctly I believe Dashe is not in favor for a humanoid, I believe you were :21:, I myself am indifferent, and I have not really seen any yea or nay otherwise (though most of the recent suggestions are for animal-like mascots). Whatever is chosen though, it would be nice to narrow it down soon as there are only two weeks until the submission is due. Personally I would shy away from Mammals, while they do have the likeability factor to them they have been quite done at C-U. The same goes for birds. I like the idea of something armored like a crab or a beetle. I think frogs can be cute as well. Then there's the completely robot design which I think is harder to pull off but might be more unique (though I have seen some of these as well). Perhaps we should focus on some of the back story (I think the lack of which is park of what makes this contest difficult). After all a "system observation unit" would look quite different from a "automated spotting machine." So what exactly is this thing supposed to be? I personally like the idea of it being a digger reconnaissance/scouting unit that possibly survived a carbon reinitialization (though I would not specifically mention that in the description, maybe in the comments stating it as a possibility). It's reconnaissance skills could help the Bright Bats in the ruins or spy on the local gangs/police or something along those lines. Something could be said about several of these things being found only in the ruins of Klickelan though they appear to not be the same technology as the reaverbots and nobody really knows what they are. This is the only repairable example discovered, though it's vocal processing unit has been broken. That's just me. I think we should make up some more back stories/explanations of what this mascot is and pick what we like.
