Most of you have probably seen my attempted remake of MML in Source. It failed, but the main reason I wanted to do it was to show the back story additions I thought up. So I will post them here instead!
Legends left a lot up to interpretation, the back story was vague and incomplete in many ways. Arne from androidarts.com did a pretty good job of filling in these holes. For this reason you'll see a lot of influence from him in my ideas. I think there's a lot more that can be done with the story though. What follows is MY explanation of the Master System and its past.
CHAPTER EARTH
In the far future, Earth suffers an inevitable disaster1. Scientists saw it coming and realized nothing could be done to stop it. Elysium was built, a giant moon-sized spaceship. Millions were gathered onto the ship. A museum as well was built on the ship, stocked with more literature and artifacts than anyone could read and view in an entire lifetime. Elysium departed, its course set for the unknown, in search of a suitable new home.
CHAPTER TERRA
Many years later, a suitable planet is found. It is named Terra, due to its similarity to Earth in climate and size. There are vast oceans, and no vegetation. Probes are sent down to collect bacteria for study. The scientists in charge of optical observation find nothing of interest on the surface, although those manning instruments that detect sub-surface structures find, to their amazement, there seems to be a vast underground network of tunnels filled with moving contraptions and powered systems. Strangely though, they don't seem to be alive. The collected bacteria are deemed too dangerous to the humans. They are as resilient as Achaea, like parasites in their nature, and frighteningly quick to adapt. The controversial "Carbon Re-Initialization" system is given the green light. If the humans are going to live on the surface, the current life must be eradicated.
Satellites are distributed around the planet. The first kind, Destroyers, sent a cocktail of microwaves, radio waves, and radiation towards the surface. At this point, not only have the humans become more resilient than modern day people to radiation, but Terra had a much lower radiation level than Earth to start out with. The signal is enough to kill the bacteria without making the planet uninhabitable. The second kind, Creators, started to grow vegetation, bacteria, and animals of every kind from a library of DNA. As soon as these were ready, they were sent down to Terra. Soon the surface would be comfortably habitable.
CHAPTER COLLECTIVE
Now, unfortunately for the humans, those Bacteria were already a part of another experiment. Deep within the planet, a mechanical monster resided. The collective. All of the tunnels, all of the machines, all of the computing systems down there were all linked and all thought as one giant organism. The deepest part of that system contained a supercomputer, the Identity, a database and principle engine that all of the system's decisions were based on. The Collective was observing the activity of different tribes of bacteria, perfecting its reasoning skills by predicting the outcome and occurrence of bacterial events, and then realizing the results. There was, as well, a much more significant reason for this experiment. The Identity was, to say the least, displeased at the sudden disappearance of its experiment. The Collective turned its eyes skyward and vowed war against the invaders.
The humans were ready to make their first trips to the surface, but all plans had to stop when the machines from underground, which had been named Reaverbots (based on villains from an old Marvel comic), began to surface and wipe out all the life that had just been put there. Animals were slaughtered, vegetation was burned, and bacteria were eradicated. A great panic arose when the Reaverbots built a structure that began launching concussive missiles towards Elysium. They failed to breach the atmosphere, however, and the humans were left to revise their plans.
For the concern of defense, the meteor destruction apparatuses were adapted into weaponry, and more weaponry was constructed. A week later it was needed too, when more cleverly crafted missiles managed to pass out of Terra's atmosphere. It was decided that the enemy must be known in order to be destroyed. The bravest and strongest were sent on manned missions to capture Reaverbots and return them to Elysium. This proved successful and useful. The Reaverbot technology was efficient and self-powered by a strange element that was controllably unstable. These were named quantum refractors, and Elysium was quickly modified to use them.
CHAPTER IDENTITY
The most intriguing of the Reaverbots, however, were the Eg-Kepers. These were dug up by the sub surface missions, and were completely harmless. These were the Collective's most important function, the main purpose of the Identity's experiments with the bacteria. The Eg-Kepers, the humans realized, were not complete yet, not fully functional, but their purpose was obvious. They were incubators for advanced nanotechnology. Each one contained billions of microscopic networked bacteria-like robots, and the means to produce more. Each nanaobot was equipped to control sub-cell processes.
The Identity's main strive was complete takeover, complete control. The Collective was working to take control of the bacteria. This technology, the humans realized, could be easily adapted to control an entire organism.
Alright, that's all I've got in me today. I've got the rest of it figured out already but I can't sit here another moment typing. I'll add more tomorrow. What will the humans do with the nanaobots? What is the Identity's next move? When on earth is the Master going to get involved in this story? (Believe me, there will be a LOT about the Master). Find out soon!

1: I think THIS should be the disaster.
