This is probably a terrible idea. Probably. I didn’t sleep last night, so I can’t quite tell at the moment. Maybe it’s a good idea. Either way, it’s a commitment, so I’m sure I’ll live to regret it.
Just a little activity to pass the hours. I’ve had something like this in mind for a while now, but never really got around to it.
Basically, every day for as long as I can (aiming until at least the end of Summer here), I want to put out one piece of writing. It could be an essay, or a short story, or maybe just random musings, but it will be a tangible, concrete, paper-and-ink piece of writing, as opposed to some nebulous idea gathering dust in the back of my mind. And it will adhere to these guidelines:
- It will be at least 1000 words in length.
- No more than one hour will be spent on doing the actual writing and revision, else I’d probably be at it forever. The time spent thinking about the piece before the actual writing doesn’t count towards this.
- It will not be serial. Each piece should be self-contained, complete in and of itself.
- It will involve no extensive outside research; each piece should draw from personal knowledge/experience/et cetera. Doing something like confirming names or dates for accuracy is acceptable, but nothing beyond simple crosschecking of facts.
I was going to do something like this with paintings, but I’ve got a bunch of art obligations already outstanding and I don’t much feel like piling more on top of it. So, writing. Seemed like a nice way to break up the other stuff I’ve got going on, and I have been meaning to get some ideas down on paper.
Anyway, the reason I’m posting this here is to invite anyone who might be interested in doing something similar to join in. Choose a hobby, set some guidelines and goals for yourself, decide on a timetable, and go for it. Pixel art maybe, or fan fiction, or game-making, or music, or model-building. Write a novel at one chapter a day or something. Learn to play a new song on the guitar each week. Whatever’s your bag. Then make a thread and post the results up here if you like.
As for me, I can post up whatever writing I put out if anyone is interested, though I’m not counting on it. Most of my stuff will probably be tripe anyway, considering how little writing practice I get in these days. But hey, my tripe is your tripe. o.o
I’ll begin tomorrow, hopefully after a good night’s sleep.
