It's Segata Sanshiro's revenge! If you want the games to get better, PLAY SEGA SATURN!

(This would be better off in the Video Game Discussion section)
I agree that Sonic games are taking a plunge, at least as far as the console titles go. I honestly enjoyed Sonic Rush, I felt that it captured the essence of 'speed', and it was pretty thrilling. Sonic Unleashed's day stages are excellent from what I hear, but the stupid Were-hog thing tears the game down. Sonic Team seems to enjoy shooting themselves in the foot, apparently.
The soundtracks of the newer games are epic, I must admit. They've been doing a pretty nice job with the music, so I have to give them props for that. I don't like some of these new characters they keep insisting on adding in, because then Sega likes to keep you from playing as people such as Knuckles or Tails, in favor of Shadow or Silver etc. Just my 2 cents on this whole deal.

We'll just make him faster and the games will be good again."Nah. Sonic is faster than he should be, if you ask me. I don't know where all these strange accusations of a slower Sonic are coming from. What's bad about the new games is the sub-par level design. The franchise didn't used to be about getting to the finish line as fast as possible, they were essentially about platforming and exploration. Which is what the new games seriously lack. Honestly. You could replace Sonic with a car and I wouldn't even know it was supposed to be a Sonic game. It's all just linear race tracks now.

I have to agree with B-R-E-T on that. The games lost loads of their personality when it became a simple matter of keeping the [→] button held down. I did still love the Sonic Rush games, though.

Sonic 2 is and will always be my favorite game, not only because of nostalgia(t'was my first game), but because of it's awesome level-design that just flowed really well.
In other words, what B-R-E-T said.

Sonic 2 is awesomeness itself. I can't decide if I like it better than Sonic 3 & Knuckles though. S3&K was mindblowingly amazing also, but Sonic 2 just has a certain kick to it. Soooo cool. Way past cool, actually.
If Sonic ever successfully transitioned from a 2D Platformer to a 3D Adventure game, it must've been shortlived. (∗has never played Sonic Adventure∗) If they ever manage to get away from this emphasis on high-speed, there's still time for some good old vintage Sonic the Hedgehog action on the portables. DLC will be another option for a while too. Sonic Team really needs to get with it. With an original trilogy as great as Sonic thru S3&K, how could playing up the retro angle possibly be a bad idea? (mind you when I say that I mean a new “retro” game, not another Compilation; I swear, Sega, one day I'm going to stop buying those!)

I liked the Sonic Adventure games since they still held on to the exploration aspects the 2D had. Turning all the games into "race to the end of a fixed course" just got annoying after a while. Sonic Unleashed tapped the classic roots somewhat, but went two steps backwards on the Were-hog mechanics. If I can find Rush, I'll check it out...

I didn't mean for this to be a serious discusion. It was just supposed to be a joke. Sorry it got so serious. :'(I just always wanted to say my opinion on the matter: Segata's spirit is hacking into the games to make them horrible, as a revenge for us not playing Sega Saturn. He can't beat us up because he's dead, there are too many people not playing Sega Saturn right now, and violence doesn't solve anything. Besides, crapifying a formerly godly series is far worse than just inflicting pain. We deserve it.

Yes, I have. It's gonna be a long time 'til it's done, though.

Gameinformer did a special on Sonic in their April fools issue, "Gameinfarcer". Check it out.
What does it take to kill sonic? Interview with Yuji Naka
That is what I think is going on. They are trying to terminate sonic as best as they can, and the stupid fans keep buying their garbage, so they keep making them.

The guys who developed the Sonic RPG for the DS must've missed the memo then. Last time I checked, that game got pretty good ratings.

orly?MayImilae: When I first saw your post I missed the whole "april issue" thing and thought that was real, but now that I know it was fake I'm even more disappointed.

The only things that ruins sonic games for me is the stupid gimmicky gameplay (best example being were-hog in sonic rush), the characters they keep tacking on, and how the environments are slowly losing their magic. Don't get me wrong, the environments really do look huge and vibrant, but they feel so drab compared to old sonic's colorful and fairly interesting creativity in the backgrounds.
They should keep it colorful, less story, and more freedom. (sonic rush literally was just one giant linear road you kept running down in every level)
