Man, I recently rediscovered this series and it is awesome. I originally thought that "Samurai Pizza Cats" was an American cartoon making fun of a Japanese cartoon, but turns out that it's actually Japanese in origin. So it's actually a Japanese cartoon making fun of itself. Sort of.
The people who wrote the English script weren't provided with a translation of the source material, so they just made it up as they went along. It ended up pretty funny, especially when something happened that didn't make sense without the context, so they just had to make stuff up -- like how the badguy, Seymour Cheese, kept crossdressing. The English writers had to keep making up excuses for it.
Anyway, fun stuff.
BUMP: I had to bump this because I watched the series again and it's still hilarious. I can't believe no one has even tried watching it in the last year! I mean, what other anime series has jokes about Greenpeace and Dan Rather's toupee?
You're missing out -- go torrent it or something now!
BUMP: Sorry, I'm bumping it again. This is one of the funniest and surprisingly, more intelligent cartoons ever made/translated! Just check out this exchange, which occurs while the pizza cats are forced to play dodge ball with the badguys:
SPEEDY SERVICE (pronounced "Ser-VEE-chay"): Whoa! That dodgeball was a bomb!
BADGUY: Well, everybody cheats a little. This is the big leagues, after all. But since you handled my fastball so easily, we must now begin to cheat a LOT!
Seriously awesome. Go check it out.

Oh, I've been watching it...I think my favorite quote was when the Big Cheese said (in the sushi episode) "I find that highly amusing. We will now laugh." It's a pretty versatile quote too.

I'm so happy someone finally responded! I love how Big Cheese and Jerry retire, bicycling through the Swiss Alps without even pedaling! Oh, and when Cheese has a cold, he looks at the screen and says, "Don't worry, boys and girls, your old pal Big Cheese'll be just fine."

I remember this show from a long time ago. Big Cheese always seems to have the the funniest lines: "We've only got one giant marauding robot left: if you break it, there won't be any more, but it'll be worth it if you can get rid of those pizza cats.." that line was pretty unusual to me. I think another surefire laugh is Lucille: get her sad, angry, overjoyed and she fires missles at you: That, or whenever Speedy and Guido fought for her affections... they'd die for her, they would kill for her... heck, they'd kill each other for her. ;D

Yeah, I liked it when Speedy and Guido were fighting over Lucille and got into an argument over environmental politics. That was so non sequitur to what was actually going on.

I remember that one: Stop Dragon my cat around. I loved how the writers have a field day with the dialogue: "Dragon legs... you better see a doctor about that." Another thing that's either sure to get you laughing, or possibly strike terror, is Princess Vi.. you so much as get her miffed and she reenacts her favorite anecdote: " SEND THIS FOOL TO PRISONER ISLAND!! " Yikes, too bad she doesn't know she's sending the 'poor fool' to a paradise.

Hm, this sounds interesting...is there something about it on Youtube? Yeah, there are episodes loaded up at youtube. It's nice to see that silliness all over again. It's amazing how thy much they got away with back in those days. I'd love to see a collection someday, but for now, youtube's got it covered. For some reason, religious zealots seem to think that anime in general is a sin... ignorance, that's what I say. I saw one clip in which the comments are atagonizing folks who like anime.. idiots. Moving on, most everyone seems a little unhinged to some degree.. It's amazing the city doesn't fall apart with folks like Emperor Fred and Vi running the place in their own weird ways..

I forgot which episode makes fun of people who like anime, but you could probably use Emperor Fred and Princess Vi as a heavy-handed metaphor for America's current political situation.
Also, it's pretty easy to torrent the SPC entire run, pretty much. I can't watch one or two episodes because they're Real Media files, but the rest are .avis. And some of them are on Youtube, too.

Actaually, it's possible. The latest version of Real can enable you to download them. But I'd rather, if that's possible, torrent them. I haven't looked at a lot of sites of that nature, but haven't found SPC on them.

Try mininova.org. That's where I got mine from. Also, I can't use Real Player because I have a Mac. Not the kind with two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, and cheese, but the kind that's cooler than John Hodgman.
Also, the latest torrents have episodes that didn't used to be there, so I got a couple that I did not previously have. Nice.

Wow. that place has A LOT of torrents! Right now, I'm doing Lupin the 3rd, so when that's done, I'll check out more of the pizza cats among a list of others I'm gleamed. Thanks, aarond. I can't remember which one it was but I remember one line, "here at the pizza cat pizza palor, you'll find the bravest heroes in Little Tokyo: the customers!" Man, that was funny. ;D

One of my favorite episodes is called "Gender-Bender Butterflies," where the Big Cheese's evil butterflies make people take on characteristics of the opposite gender. What's funny is the giant egg that disperses the butterflies looks like an American football, which probably wasn't even noticed in the Japanese version, but in the American version, the Pizza Cats start spouting football metaphors left and right. Also, they mention the Ali-Frazier fight in there, too.
