anyone else here study japanese (speaking, reading, writing, grammar, etc.)? I study it on and off as a hobby. I cant speak much, but I can say simple senences like (this is romanized... "romaji"): ano hito wa dare des ka (meaning that person who is, translated to english without the grammer being changed.) I CAN say more than that, but its a simple example. my reading/writing skills are bad... but I DID translate scratch and sing (growl in the US/UK/etc.) from a jpanese pokemon game... which I got bored of translating shortly after, and just played my english copy. lol.
everyone I tell that I know some japanese seems amazed... theyre all "you Know some japanese!-?" or "WTF you are lying... no you dont" until I start speaking it and whip out a book from the local library...
well, anyone else study japanese? I plan on using it to buy imported unedited games... youd be surprised at some of the stuff the ESRB and other raters make companies cut out of games... NO not all of it is smut... SOME is content.

I've tried studying Japanese as a hobby, but really, I find that I cannot effectively teach myself a language. Yeah, I know some basic grammar, how to introduce myself, and how to read katakana, but then again...who doesn't, these days?
The university I hope to attend offers Japanese as a language, so I'll be taking it along with French as the two required languages for my linguistics major. Being able to speak English, French, and Japanese, I will be SO READY TO TAKE ON THE WORLD. ;D

I havn't started studying Japanese yet, but when school starts up again, I'm going to be learning how to read, write, and speak it. So by the end of the upcoming school year, I should be pretty good at it. Although, I have learned some words from watching Anime in Japanese with subtitles. ;D *Loves the Japanese language*

Heh. I actually tried to learn Japanese myself a year or two ago, but I got absolutely no where. It was a half-hearted effort really. I wanted to learn it so I could import Rockman games and play them the way they were meant to be played(particularly in the EXE series, but I'd also like the original MegaMan X stuff and Legends and stuff... but I'm not sure how much different those are). I plan on taking it as a language sometime in the future. But in high school it's not really an option, and I can't teach myself...

I can't take Japanese at school this year because of my art class, but next year I'll be able to. And I figure I'll be able to take it in college. I know two words in Japanese, and I can't pronounce them, so it doesn't count, anyway. (Baka and Hikari, to be exact). I was thinking of teaching myself, but I think I'd do better taking a class. There'd be an actual person to help me, and not just a book or something.

Well, here's a third word for your list.
Kochinawa.
It means hello.

にほんごおべんきょしています。 でも、かんじがむずかしです。 わたくしはにほんごをすきです。 But if you don't have Japanese characters on your computer:

Well, here's a third word for your list. Kochinawa. It means hello. I think you mean "konnichiwa."

*gets out "Foundations of Japanese Language" book*
nihon = Japan nihongo = Japanese language nihonjin = Japanese person
How Nihon went to Japan, I really don't know. Probably some translation error when the word spread through China and into Europe.
:Ahem:
Yup it is konnichiwa. Also, don't bother capitalizing any of these words because there's no such thing in Japanese.
Anyway, more words for your enjoyment:
konnichiwa, more exactly is konnichiha but in this case they pronounce the ha as wa. It's also not one word but two but made as one word because of some sort of shortening thing.
arigatou gozaimasu - thank you very much
ogenki desu ka - how are you? (you don't need a "?" after ka because ka is the question mark equivelent in this case)
ohayou gozaimasu - good morning
konbanwa - good evening(again its actually konbanha, but pronounced as wa)
sayounara - goodbye (often spelled in romanji as sayoonara)
nutssurei shimasu - excuse me
dou itashimanutse - you're welcome/not at all (when someone says thank you, you can also reply iie which is sort of a way to say "no problem" but also means "no")
minasan isshoni itte kudasai - everyone, please say it together
mou ichido itte kudasai - please say it again
All of these expressions are very polite and formal, may not always be heard in this manor in everyday conversation. However, you would always speak this way to your sensei (teacher) or other (senpai) superior.
Let me know if you'd like any other lessons. I've got one ready to go on the suffix to names like san, chan, and kun (usually a f.a.q.)

I'd rather learn Russian and German instead of Japanese...

I've been studying Japanese as a hobby, since my high school doesn't offer it anymore (god, you would think that high schools in a city that has a sister city in Japan would keep the Japanese language option). My dad bought me some PC programs that'll help me learn Japanese easily. Plus, I've been learning Japanese through Pokémon Leaf Green (imported), listening to j-pop, and watching subbed anime.

I can write and speak but I can't read. That...makes no sense. Reading and writing go hand in hand. You cannot write in a language without being able to read it. Being able to write in Japanese without understanding it is a different thing entirely. It's called... COPYING.

Well Shelldragon has been studying up for that big exam coming. The one where Japanese demons show up and start eating everybody who can't say 'arigatou gozaimasu' or 'nutssurei shimasu.' However I have heard a few phrases on the wind that may just be a third language. Tell me is 'Kassiminassa Ka' Japanese? How about 'Simp Kanassa ka?' I don't think they are, or at least they weren't explained as Japanese, but it's a legitimate question.
And as for Roll Casket saying she can speak and write, but not read, I think she means she can read the words she can speak, but not having a formidable, or even minimal knowledge of Pacific rim languages I can't say.
