If I Ain't Got You
A young man in blue sauntered inside the large airship. With a few scratches on his face and armor, yet he was without a care in the world.
“Some people want diamond rings, some just want everything~” Volnutt sang as he approached a young woman with long, spikey blonde hair. She gave him a small smile and a nod. He lowered his eyelids, then lifted up the crystal.
She yelped with excitement, “Oh Mega Man! You found the refractor!” Volnutt gave her a grin, “You darn right I did.” He leaned closer to her face. Lowering his eyelids, he gave her a playful wink. “You don’t have to call me Mega Man, Roll. It’s only the two of us and Gramps… and Data here.”
The blushing mechanic stammered in response, “A-As if you’re professional outside of the working day.” Volnutt put a hand to his mouth, snickering. He loved breaking her concentrated thoughts. She placed the crystal into the container, then put a pencil to her lips before asking,
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
A Year Later.
Fluttership.
Roll stood at the edge of her bedroom’s balcony. Within the span of a few days, he was gone. He no longer stood within this world. Elysium? Heaven? The Underworld? Whatever it was, she knew that he couldn’t have been…
Deactivated. She couldn’t shake herself to use the other word that would prove her other half significantly empty. “I know you’re out there,” she mused. Holding the clipboard in front of her, a part of her wished that he was there again to disturb her line of concentration.
“Swiss roll… You’re up at the crook of dawn.”
“I… I was finishing the blueprints for-“
“Yeah, I get it. It’s meant to rescue me in case things go wrong.”
“Mhmm… It’s good to always have a backup plan in case things go awry."
Roll felt a warm hand on her shoulder. Placing her hand on top of it, she turned to see her grandpa standing with a blank expression on his face. “He’s going to be down soon, Gramps. It’s not the same without him.” Grandpa Caskett groaned, “You sure you want to stay up this late, Roll? It’s very early, and you’re going to lose a lot of sleep.”
“I’m closer to finding the key to get the rocket there.” Roll placed tapped the pencil on the clipboard. “Tron … had some good points, but didn’t have the right goals in mind. Besides… Umm…” She shyly tapped the picture of Volnutt. Not another word was needed for Grandpa Caskett to understand how much she desired to be with her love. The old man gave her a reassuring thumbs up, then walked back to the bunk.
The mechanic paced back and forth in front of her board. She found various drawings across the board that Volnutt had left. Apparently, she hadn’t taken much notice to the tiny doodles that were hiding on the corners of the pages. Some of the expressions she could understand, others were entirely… dumb. But cute. Dumb but cute. The corners of her mouth lifted into a small smile. “Dork…” As she followed the drawings, they seem to coincidentally point towards one direction.
A smaller doodle was next to another doodle of a crystal refractor.
“How many… of these did he draw??? That-!!”
Elysium.
Volnutt managed to find a small station to occupy himself with ideas of what he would do when he returned home.
“When I return home,” he said softly. “You’ll have the best gift, Roll. I promise.” He took a nearby guitar. He strummed the strings. Snowflakes began to descend from the sky.
Define what’s within
And I’ve been there before
Fluttership – Morning.
Roll frantically flipped the pages on her clipboard back and forth. “This has to mean something… Think, girl, think… You’re a Caskett. Something brilliant has to come out this brain!” The second and third pages were filled with drawings of a reminiscent dollar sign and the crystal refractor.
Crystal refractor.
Crystal!
The mechanic slammed her clipboard down, sending her (and delightfully Tron’s) papers flying. “Eat your heart out, Tron. Your precious dork has found the solution to our rocket!” In a whirlwind of oil, saws, and tools, Roll was off to work within her quarters.
Elysium.
But everything means nothing,
If I ain’t got you… baby…
Volnutt continued to play the guitar. He still held the hopes that Roll would find him. Everything that mattered to him… was her.
Hand me the world on a silver platter,
and what good would it be,
with no one to share,
With no one who truly cares for me.
Roll…
The one name he couldn’t live without. A faint glow in the distance, coming from Earth was heading his direction. He blinked, squinted, and slapped himself in the face. It couldn’t be. He dropped his guitar, running straight towards the rocket heading his direction.
Later That Night.
Roll and Volnutt held to each other like there was no tomorrow.
“You dummy, you drew a bunch of refractors all over my work.”
“It helped me get to you, so consider I consider it a win in my book. So you're welcome. AND that means I have that date with you. You know, that picnic-”
“Pfft, whatever. You owe me that song you've been singing before you left.” He nodded with a big grin.
Volnutt gave Roll a kiss on the forehead, then a kiss on her two cheeks. “I knew my swiss roll would figure out everything. To get this big hunk of junk home!” He dramatically pretended to fall on Roll as she gave him a light tap on his spine. “This boy is mighty tired, and it’s 9pm. What do you say we hit the sack, Roll?”
“Whatever you say, Mega Man.” She gladly returned the kiss: one on the nose and a quick one on the lips. “Just don’t go floating off on the moon again.”
“Whatever. The cheese was great. I think I could go back there a second time if you were there with me.”
“Good night, Vol.” Roll turned over to her side as Rock shifted protectively over her.
