You're definitely far from the only one who's sick of 8-bit Mega Man, Buster. It's kind of lame that I can turn around and pick up a game that looks better and plays more intuitively and also happens to be over 20 years older than the later two 8-bit Mega Man titles. It's also getting to the point where even looking at that malformed Mega Man sprite makes me want to punch things. I just don't find that sprite really all that good-looking. It kind of reminds me of a frog.
I'd be surprised if Capcom's "major" announcement is anything more significant than this, too.

I kind of dig this crossover. I have to admit, they picked a pretty bad time to fund/support such a crossover considering how much buttmad MegaMan fans are hating on Street Fighter this year. It takes real talent to piss people off as much as Capcom does. But it seems cool anyway. The Street Fighter sprites look nifty. The stages, apparently inspired by Street Fighter stage designs look pretty sweet too. And those 8-bit themes. ... <3 Looks pretty cool to me. And it's pretty neat that Capcom— Capcom US, from the looks of it, even —would sponsor and release a fan-game like this. And it seems like they're saying MegaMan's year-long anniversary celebration is just starting with this crossover, so that's cool. I'm not expecting much for an announcement on the 17th— they've made it pretty clear that they don't want to announce any new games until they're absolutely certain those games are going to be released. And I can't really blame them for that. @buster Cannon: At least this game is just 8-bit in name only. It's not (or it doesn't appear to be) actually limited by the restrictions of an NES game. (e.g., sprites are still unshaded, but they have more colors than usual; more is happening on screen at once; animations seem a little different/smoother etc.) That's one of the things that tipped me off that this was a fan-game, before it was posted up all over the place. I don't mind 8-bit as an art style, but they don't have to artificially impose limits just so we can pretend it's still 1987. (EDIT: I may be wrong about this one. It just felt a little off in the trailer.) I like 8-bit MegaMan fine. His sprite is actually quite fantastic for an NES game, or so I'm told. They had to do some black magic to be able to use that many colors or something.. I dunno. MegaMan's style has become synonymous with 8-bit for a reason. The sprites in MegaMan 7 and 8 just changed the style too much for my liking. What I wouldn't mind seeing is if Capcom went up to 16-bit style MegaMan using his spritesheet from The Wily Wars. Simple, cartoony and faithful to the original style, while still undoubtedly an improvement. That would be great. Insanely unlikely, but great.

@ Handlebar-Orion X.: I will not take the official statement as anything business decision-making. If anything it's probably just a show of enthusiastic support. Which isn't a bad thing, though oddly phrased. If anything, the JP reception seems to be generally positiveI know I want this, and that Blankazilla too.

I would really, really like a quality capcom made Megaman but this fan made cross over isn't a bad thing. I somehow doubt if they would ever have sponsored a Megaman fan game if they hadn't crossed it with SF. Let's hope the news on the 17th isn't some bullshit.

Picked it up this morning. I'll play it later because I'm in the middle of another Mega Man fan game right now.

Was it just me, or did CU's servers go down for a few minutes? When I booted up Chrome this morning, the Devroom and Mega Man groups just were not loading right. I had to open up the Mega Man group on IE to download it. Which took 2 minutes 55 seconds roughly.

It probably wasn't just you. I heard inadvertently that Unity was having site trouble, but I can't quite remember where. I downloaded the game late last night by following BC's link a few minutes he posted it. Outside of big things like that, I don't use Unity at all, so I wouldn't know much outside of MMLS if not covered by TMMN and/or Protodude. On the bright side, if they're crashing due to overload from people trying to download the game, then that's a semi-promising sign; provided that's what caused it. The more people that download, the better.

I actually got a network error and an incomplete file. If Mega Man's future depends on the quantity of downloads then I actually hope it's because too many people are trying to get the game.

It took me a while to access the download. I got it working, did beat Chun Li, but I'll have to put this game on hold for sake of the secret santa project. Not bad, but I'll have to free some memory from my laptop to increase performance (all the space is nearly eaten up).

Yeah, I don't think Capcom Unity is built to host downloadable files like this, let alone new, “full” games. Everyone's been having trouble downloading it today. It was really slow: I got 20-30 KB/s— that's even slow for my connection! It took me 20-25 minutes to download the ≈34 MB file. That was kind of lame, but I just did something else while I waited. Apparently a lot of people got corrupted files when they tried to download it too, just based on the buzz on Twitter. There are mirrors out there where you can get the file faster, but Capcom is watching the downloads on Capcom Unity*, so maybe that's preferable. I downloaded this earlier this morning, and blasted through the 8 Robot Masters World Warriors with relative ease. I got past SPOILER;Balrog, and then got stuck on SPOILER;Vega's stage before I went out to work. And I've been out all day, so I haven't had time to get back to it. I'm hoping to get home soon so I can make it through to the end. I've gotta say I'm having a pretty good time with it. It's a pretty well designed MegaMan game. The stages have pretty good conveyance, just like they've been saying on Capcom Unity. It's a little unforgiving at times, but those times are usually trying to encourage you to experiment with your weapons. I know, that's crazy, right? You'd almost think this was a MegaMan game or something.. (Pardon me for being a sarcastic jackass, but some folks on Twitter don't seem to get how you play these games, and it's left me a bit annoyed.) I really love the stage designs and the music. All pretty faithful to/inspired by the characters' stages/music from Street Fighter. It's pretty nifty. One thing that surprises me is that there doesn't appear to be a Guile stage, which means no 8-bit Guile theme— and Guile's theme goes with everything. Maybe he's in there somewhere, but I'm past the 8 challengers' stages and onto the villain stages, and he's nowhere to be found. If there's one problem with it, I'd say it's the total lack of a Save feature. There's nothing. No passwords, no Save Files, nothing. And much to my frustration, there's no option to Mute the volume, so you can just inconspicuously/unobnoxiously leave it open while you do other things. (Although Windows 7/8's application-specific volume settings may work..) It's really not a very long game, if it's anything like a classic MegaMan game, so you can usually clear it in one sitting. At worst, there's 8 main stages and two “Wily Castle” like gauntlets to run through. (I'm betting there's just the one, but I could be wrong.) And there's rarely any reason to want to go back to a specific point after completing the game too; and if you did want to, it wouldn't take long. It's still lame, but I'm not letting it ruin the game for me. (EDIT: Or at least, I wasn't letting it ruin the game for me until I came home and found my game had crashed and now I have to start over. Now I'm angry. If crashes are a common thing this is very very bad. Grr..) All in all, pretty fun game so far. I'm happy with it. * - Capcom is watching, but it seems like it's just Capcom US. Maybe they'd report back to Capcom Japan if things were really good, but there's really nothing they could do themselves, besides maybe fund some more fan-games in the future if this one is a success. Capcom US doesn't really make games; they just localize them.

From what I've been reading (still doing different things), this game has some tech issues. Crashing happens occasionally, but the lack of being able to save is baffling. I'm playing a fan game with a password system in the Mega Man 8 demake, for instance. As large as it is, it's a nice thing to have.
Also, I have no idea how downloading an 8-bit fan game shows that you're a fan of the franchise. Why a title like this would be used to gauge interest in one of Capcom's many interest checks is more annoying than anything. Doesn't help that the company hasn't been listening to fans for a couple of years now anyway.
I'll play it tomorrow and make my own judgments then. Either way, this anniversary's already off to an iffy start.

Try getting the one on JP's site instead. I have played it for a couple of hours; so far, none of the technical problems described in this thread.

I got it to run fine after changing the default controls and all outside of the pause button that would sometimes boot me right out after I wanted in or vice versa. Stages are bland from a Mega Man standpoint, but the bosses are pretty fun in a different way since it's about paying attention to what attacks the bosses are going to do more than anything else.
I would have liked a save system and the ability to stock up on E-Tanks instead of each one being a one-time only deal. If you get them, do not use them right away. You'll thank me when you're in the second and third fortress stages.
Anyway, it was all right for a fan game, and it did give me a run for my money at times.
