Hey everybody I finally finished that fanfic that I said I was almost done with a long time ago! Please read it if you got the time. I think it's pretty good. The transition from Microsoft Word to forum text was rough but I fix it a bit. Enjoy!
"Yo, Ron, you there man?" asked Phillip Cornnell, a semi-brave, inexperienced digger. Nothing but static came over the radio.
"Roy! Roy if you don't answer me I'm going to crawl back outta' here!" Phil began to wonder if their junky old radio had gave out.
"Yeah, Phil I'm here, I just answered the door for the takeout guy." Replied Roy Norton, Phil's childhood friend, and spotter. "I ordered you some but I might eat it before you get out of there" said Roy, only half joking.
"You better stay focused, or you're gonna' get me killed, you freak."
"Dude you're a pro, you got this!"
"Are you sure this tunnel even goes to a ruin, man?"
"Yeah, this kid said it was legit."
"You're joking right?" asked Phil, even though he 'knew' he was joking.
"Well, his dad said it was too." Roy was not joking.
"Oh geez dude shut up, I see a light ahead."
"Oh, oh yeah, that's the ruin!"
"Roy, I know! Oh man it's darker than I thought it would be down here." Phil said as he turned on the flashlight duct taped to his corroded baseball helmet.
"You will want to go left, but watch out, there's two reavers around the corner." said Roy, finally serious.
Phil peaked around the corner carefully, and saw two Zakobons monotonously marching back and forth in the hallway. "It's just two fat one's."
"Alright, take care of em' Philly-boy." replied Roy, knowing his friends ability.
Phil jumped out from the corner firing several shots at the alarmed guardians, bursting them into a mess of twisted metal and refractor shards with his buster pistol. Phil admired his little gun resting in his big metal hand, it was the only advantage they had and he was very lucky to have found it in his hometown ruins. After blowing away the non-existing smoke from the barrel he looked up and noticed the meager amount of power source strung about the floor, "Alriiiight, some zenny!".
"How much?" asked Roy desperately.
"Not alot, but maybe we'll get enough this time to get me some decent armor or buster parts." said Phil as he looked at the scraps of metal tied around his blue jeans and sown onto his heavy coat.
"No, if I can't buy new radio equipment, you can't get armor. Like you said, we got debt to pay. Take a left." said Roy sarcastically
"Yeah, you're right, but since when do you care about our debt?"
"I don't but you do. I'm not a little sissy who's scared of loan sharks." Taunted Roy. "Those guys were definitely pirates, they will KILL us if we don't pay them back." Phil responded as he turned down the left hallway. "yeah, and you are down in a ruin fighting reaverbots that could KILL you, I think we could fight pirates off."
"'WE' You couldn't fight your way out of a revolving door!", Phil laughed "Whatever man, just make us some money" Said Roy with a smile.
Roy took his eyes off the cracked monitor and looked around the spotcar. It was a small van with two bench seats that they slept on, Roy's being the closest to the wheel while Phil's was towards the back by Roy spotting station and nailed down chair. "Kitty, you are a mess" Roy thought to himself. The old spotter's car was junkie and dirty, but she was reliable and had been running on the same small refractor for years with no sign of give.
"Phil, we need to fix this old car up!"
"We have debt remember? We just talked about this!"
"If you are so worried about debt and pirate attacks why don't you find us a big refractor and pay it off?"
"Yeah, it's that easy, why didn't I think of that before!" said Phillip, getting tired of his useless spotter.
"Is that clunky new arm of yours even worth the debt?"
"Ahh yeah, it's just like a real arm, but indestructible! But hey, it's not like I wanted to lose my arm or anything!"
After a series of "lefts" and "rights" ordered by Roy and a few dead ends Phillip 'discovered' a chest
"YeaOww!"
"Wha-wha-what's the matter, I'm not seeing any reavers on the monitor!" Roy exclaimed, having been awakened from a half-sleep.
"I stubbed my toe on something, this lights too dull dang it! Oh hey! It's a chest!"
"In the middle of the room?"
"Yeah, these places are built so crazy."
"I wouldn't really know."
"You would if you weren't scared of going into the ruins."
"Whatever, open the box."
Phil leaned in and was about to open the chest when it came alive, stood up, knocked him down, and started running in circles vomiting bombs.
"Oh holy crap! 'Nother fake box!"
"Yeah there's a reaverbot signal in there now."
Phil had no time to think about the ignorance that just came out of his radio because he was busy firing away at the mimic, hitting it in the legs until they were blasted off into stumbs.
"I got it!"
"You want a medal? Talk to me when you kill one of those big dogs that old dude with the metal half of face at the bar told us about."
"That guy never saw anything like that, he was drunk off his butt, telling stories about 'glory days'. Anyways, I'm gonna check and see if there was anything in the box part."
Phil reached into the burnt husk of the mimic and pulled out a busted grenade launching part and a small handful of steaming hot metal and refractor shards.
"Hey man, I found part of the reavers gun! You think you could fix it?"
"Ha, I don't know anything about guns, and besides it's freakin' anceint junk! You think I'm some kind of genius?"
"Well you're pretty good at fixing the radio and the car. What should I do with this thing?"
"Eh, throw it out, it wouldn't sell for much, and it'll just take up space in your pack."
"You're right."
Phil continued down the long, dark hall, accompanied only by the small, sad light circle of his flashlight, and his friend shouting directions and whistling a fluttery tune over the radio. As he walked down the empty halls he noticed that the dim lights in the walls of the ruin were growing brighter and brighter. So bright, that it was actually blinding him. Phil never thought it would be that bright in a ruin of all places. Phil shielded his eyes and felt his way around a corner where thankfully it was much darker. Suddenly He heard a loud sweeping noise coming from in front of him, but he still had not recovered from the light.
"Phil there are three reavers coming in fast!"
Phil dived to the ground with a loud thump, the clang of his metal plate, and three large explosions..
"PHIL YOU ALRIGHT!? PHIL! Answer me bro!"
"Whew!" Phil wiped the sweat from his brow and picked up his little helmet. "It was three floaty explody ones!"
"You're good!?"
"Yeah I'm good. No worries, just a few scrapes"
"Good." Roy breathed with a strong sigh of relief.
After Phil regained his composure he searched the dimly lit room, which at first looked like another dead end. Aside from the literal heaps of dust Phil found a crease in the wall. He wiped some of the dirt and grime to reveal a pair of sliding doors.
"Hey Roy, I found a d-"
"Phil! Do you see a door? There should be a door."
"YES, Roy I see the door."
The doors suddenly swished open faster than a guillotine slash, and twice as scary sounding. He walked into the perfectly white room, shining but not as to blind. The floors squeaked and the room smelled surprisingly pleasant. There where lines and symbols in a brilliant blue color covering all the walls equipment, and while the machinery wasn't buzzing with life, the room seemed good as new.
"Wow, man, I wish you were here, this place is amazing. I think I'm the first person to have ever stepped in here."
"Yeah, yeah, amazing, so is there any loot? There better be loot."
Phil searched the room and inspected all of the items in the room, while they all looked like they could fetch great prices, it was all infused with the floors and walls. As he approached the far wall it snapped open in an instant.
There was loot.
"DUDE IT'S A REFRACTOR!" Phil exclaimed, it was the best moment of his life.
"YES! I KNEW MY SHORT CUT WOULD WORK!" Roy yelled with a maniacal laugh.
"It's blue and shiny, and freaking massive!"
"Finally, we got something right! Now we can pay off that debt! I was hoping we wouldn't have to kill those pirate punks!
Phil touched the brilliant specimen, savoring the tingling feeling it pulsed through his body with his remaining flesh and blood arm.
"Roy, this refractor will pay for way more than the debt, it will pay for anything we want!"
"We can drool over the possibilities later man! Grab the thing and crawl back through that dang hole!
"Oh, crap man, this thing won't fit in the hole!"
"Oh well the long way is worth this! Hurry up and snag it!"
Phil grabbed the massive blue refractor with both of his arms. The ruins were hard pressed to let go off the refractor. Phil could barely move the sparkly obelisk from it's stasis an inch. The resistance felt almost magnetic.
"I can't move this dang thing Roy!"
"Try harder man, don't you come up without it!"
Phil rolled back his sleeves and tugged as hard as he could. As he hung onto the refractor with both of his feet pressing firmly against it's ancient pedestal he could feel it moving, vibrating, and sending powerful shocks up his arms and throughout his body.
"GAAAAAAAH IIII'VE GOT IT!" proclaimed Phil proudly, yet exhausted, as he snapped the refractor free and fell to the ground. Before they could celebrate the small bits of slate white rock began to jump and crackle on the floor.
"OH RUN MAN, RUN BIG BLIP, BIG BLIP! RUN!"
Phil quickly jumped from the floor and ran back out into the ruined halls, as a Hanmuru Doll broke through the wall crushing the ground in front of it with it's steel club arms.
"ROY! TELL ME WHERE TO GO! Screamed Phil in his girly falsetto.
"JUST STAY TO THE RIGHT FOR NOW!"
Phil ran as fast as he could taking the right turns. The Hanmuru Doll could not turn fast enough to take the turns but it crashed through the corners with it's incredible momentum, crushing the ground at Phil's heels. Large chunks of ceiling fell to Phil's left and right and what seemed to be eyes in the wall shone so brightly red that it completely illuminated the ruins.
"THIS THINGS GONNA' CRUSH ME!"
"LISTEN, GO STRAIGHT THEN LEFT! THERE ARE THREE REAVERS AHEAD! JUST RUN THROUGH!"
Three Gurugurus were lying in wait and charged toward Phil. He leaped over the trio and the Doll crushed them into heaping piles.
"Take two rights, there are a bunch of little blips, probably the floating ones!"
As phil turned the corner dozens of Fooroos flew toward him. He covered his face and plowed through the crowd of enemies. The reavers rammed into the Doll blowing large chunks out of it and the ceiling. The millennia old stone was collapsing just at the back of his heels and bouncing of the powerful robot.
"Roy I'm at the the end of my rope, this place is falling apart I can't make it!"
"Just keep running man! You can make it Phil, you can make it out of here! just a few more turns!"
Phil continued to run down the hallway taking which ever path he was closest to. He was too fatigued to hear Roy and could barely keep his eyes open, but he still kept running, dodging Arukoitan, Sharukurusu, and Zakobon that mindlessly rushed at him and were annihilated by the Hanmaru Doll.
"Phil! there! GO THROUGH THE DOOR!"
Phil ran through the door and was thrown to floor as the Doll crashed through the giant steel doors. Phil flipped over feebly and stared at the fallen mechanical beast. It was almost unrecognizable. With large chunks blown out of it, parts of other reavers lodged in it's metal plate, it's jaw missing, legs crushed, the giant was rendered immobile. It's flickering red eye was the only source of light in the room.
"Phil man! You there!? You made it, that's the elevator! You have to have made it! Phil!"
Phil looked at the refractor in his hands, shining and brilliant.
"I got it. Sweet." Said Phil as he coughed heavily then blacked out."
"Wake up sleepy Phil!" Roy said as he lightly shook his friend in the hospital bed.
Phil open his eyes slowly and looked up at Roy.
"Wha, where am I?"
"You passed out in the ruin, I went down the elevator and carried you back to the car. You're in the hospital bro, you made it! Doc here sowed you up."
"Oh cool."
Phil rised out of bed, forehead wrapped in bandages, hair matted with dirt, still in his digging jeans and coat. He slowly realized what had happened and started shaking with elation.
"Where's the refractor!? Let's sell it!" Phil exclaimed like a madman.
"Is he good to go Doc?"
The old doctor smiled and said "Well he should be ok now, it's been about twelve hours, you might need to help him walk, but he should be fine to go to the market for a bit. Nothing but a little shrapnel young man, but I'm not sure I got it all out! AhgHaHaHa!
"What do we owe you?" Asked Roy, afraid of a large bill.
" AhgHaHaHa, I'll cover it boy's, just go sell that thing and come back and tell me how much it fetched! Not much excitement in an old, worn-out boomtown like this!"
"Yes sir! Help me up Roy lets collect our fortune!"
The two walk into the barren market place and check out the shop made from scrap metal. They see a crusty old man with a metal jaw rocking in his chair.
"Hello sir, how much is this baby worth!?" Phil said as he proudly raised his treasure over the counter.
The old man practically jumped out of his seat and slammed his hands on the counter.
"Oh boy! Hand it here fellas', let me take a look!" The old Junkman examined the refractor closely with a magnified glass for a while muttering indistinguishably for several minutes.
"Hurry up man, is it worth a fortune!" Yelled Roy impatiently.
The Junkman looked up slowly and said "It's a fake."
"WHAT!" Exclaimed Phil in agony.
"Aww, they're gonna' take away my car! Oh man after all this!" Roy cried.
"Your car!? They're gonna take my ARM!"
"Hold on boy's, did it trigger a trap when ya' lifted it!?" The old man yelled.
"YES, AND ALL FOR NOTHING!" Screamed Phil, heartbroken.
"Oh no, no, my boy's. Just as I thought! It might be a fake, but it works as a decoy! Any digger could use this to avoid those traps in the ruins! It's got a small shard in it that barely keeps them ruins flowin' with juice!"
"WILL YOU BUY IT!?" Exclaimed the two boys simultaneously
"Yea, I reckon." Said the Junkman
"Please sir, we really need this! For how much!?" Phil begged
"For no more than ten thousand zenny. Highest offer." Said the old man calmly.
"Thank you so much sir!" said Phil as he excitedly shook the Junkman's arm and Roy hugged the man's leg.
"get offa me ya weirdos. Take the money and leave me the hell alone!
"Yes sir!" They said as they walked off with zenny in their pockets, and hope in their hearts. Things seemed just about perfect.
"Looks like I can get some real armor now, and you can get a better radio." said Phil happily.
"But what about the loan sharks?"
"I think you were right. If they want to try and repossess my arm they can try. From this moment on we are legit diggers that don't take crap from anyone!"
"That's the spirit Phil, we aren't push overs and today proved it! What color armor were you thinking?
"Red, definitely red. Want to get some gyros? I haven't ate in like thirty-six hours!"
"YES!"
So that's the story. I hope you liked it! If you have any critiques you should tell me!
"Yo, Ron, you there man?" asked Phillip Cornnell, a semi-brave, inexperienced digger. Nothing but static came over the radio.
