False Smile
“There it is again…” Megaman thought to himself.
Roll was sitting across from him on the table, smiling. If this was any other day or situation, Megaman would have thought nothing of it. But today was different. It had been almost 11 years since her parents disappeared while searching for the Mother Lode, and today was the day it happened 11 years ago. Normally, on this day, Barrel and Roll would go to the cemetery where a gravestone of her parents was Everyone except Roll figured that they were as good as dead, so it seem like a good (but according to Roll, temporary) idea.
This year was different.
Barrel had a “surprise” call from Von Bleucher. It was something about some “great achievement that will shack the world” or something like that. Barrel pleaded that it be another day, but Von Bleucher insisted that it could only be done on this day, at this time. So Barrel ended up paying is respects a say early without Roll, and left soon after. He would be gone for a week.
So Megaman asked Roll if she was okay, after all, it was a very sad day and Von Bleucher pretty much ruined it. When he asked this, she simply smiled.
“Don’t worry,” she said, “I’m just fine”.
But there was something about her at that very moment that wasn’t, well, Roll.
“You sure?” Megaman asked worryingly.
She nodded her head, “Yeah, I mean, given the circumstances…”
There was an odd quiet spell that settled over them, only to be broken by Data, tugging on Roll’s shirt. She looked at the little monkey, who had a marker and a note pad.
“You need something Data?” Roll asked.
Data scribbled words on the note pad, as it was the only way he could communicate with Roll without Megaman.
“Should we come with you?” Data wrote.
“To where?” She replied.
“To the cemetery. To pay respects”
Roll was silent, as well as Megaman. It was usually only her and Barrel, since it was a family thing and all. Although Megaman had often asked if he could join, it was usually answered with a quick “No!” by Roll. Megaman never knew why she of all people was against having him or Data join them. But with Barrel gone, she would have to go with someone.
“I don’t think..” Roll began, but Megaman cut her off.
“I’d like to go…” he said. As he predicted, Roll gave him a glaring look.
“Megaman…”
“Come on Roll, you don’t expect to go by yourself!”
She sighed, “well actually, yeah.”
“Roll, I should at least pay some respects,”
“But-”
“Roll, Please! Besides, if Gramps ever found out I let you go all alone…"
Roll, sighed in frustration, she knew that he was right.
“Okay, but… just promise to do what is say…”
“What? Why?”
Roll didn’t answer, she just walked out of the room and headed up to the control room.
“Make sure you dress nicely, you want to make a good impression on my parents…” she called down to him.
