Otakon is coming, and with it is a chance to show our support for Megaman Legends 3! Sure, there isn't much time before it goes - much less time than I'd be comfortable with, I think - but there's still an opportunity here, I tihnk. There's been a number of fans on the facebook page who said they had already gotten their tickets, and other folk who were headed to other, smaller anime conventions. One member mentioned the idea of setting up his own panel! There's an opportunity here to spread the word, physically, and to make ourselves known to Capcom - but most importantly, get the fans together, and focused on one thing. As it stands now, this would be the first major event after Comic-Con, so I see it as the prime opportunity to make the Legends Never Die campaign known.
I had posted about this in the other, main thread for teh campaign, but I truly believe it deserves it's own place for discussion. Otakon is busy, I don't doubt that, and if we're hoping to gain traction, then we have to be organized. Dashe and I have been talking, and she insists that it wouldn't take much to get the word out; like anything else in the community, it's about making the effort, showing heart, that is really going to get people's attention.
To that end, we need to know who in the community is going - both to Otakon, and to the other conventions. Currently, Dashe is waiting for word back from Score on making a nice design for a flyer. Once that's done, we need to know who's willing to make the flyers in bulk, for themselves and other attendees. These flyers will hopefully be distributed to other interested parties - just a simple, clean way of getting the word out. Now, it's understood that creating a bulk of flyers could be rather costly, so we've thrown the idea of setting up donations just for that very effort. Before we can do that, though, we gotta get the word from you guys: Who here is going to Otakon?
There are other ways, of course, that we can take advantage of the convention. If anyone has ideas, please speak up! But we can't do this unless we know who's going!

The rumour originated on /v/. And that's the problem, it came from /v/. Capcom might be dirty, and a little bit stupid, but I don't think they'd be this dirty or this stupid. Until someone from within the community says they saw it happen, has some photos of it going down, then I think it's best to regard it as a rumour.

This part's more about getting fliers and the like out to people who don't know about Legends, not about getting anywhere near Capcom's booths. It's to raise awareness. Their rent-a-cops shouldn't catch on if the guys with the fliers are nowhere near Capcom.

I'd love to go with everyone, but I really probably shouldn't use that much money to get over there right now. :[

This is sort of an odd place to make an introduction, but it seems odder not to make one. I'm one of the David's from the Devroom. I've been lurking on occasion since the Devroom project started.
Regardless, I have the dubious privilege of staffing Otakon. Unfortunately, I think it's probably a bit late for a full press blitz. Panel submissions closed months ago, and the guide books are already printed. I've asked my department head about trying to set something up, but I've not gotten a response yet and the best we could do to advertise it would be one or two paper signs.
That being said, I encourage similar activities at other conventions. I ran a panel trying to hype the devroom at a smaller convention in June. The mere mention of legends was enough to pack the room late on a Sunday. Of the 50 - 80 people in attendance 4 had heard of Legends 3, and they were already in the Devroom. This seems to indicate that there was a severe failure in getting the word about the devroom out, and thus a large untapped reservoir of potential Legends Never Die participants.
As to printouts, there are places at Otakon where such things are usually placed. Reaction to them is generally mixed. There are a lot of black and white fliers advertising Anime clubs, social networks, comic stores, etc. To gain any impact, whatever design the flier uses would need to stand out.

Hah, seeing you introduce yourself as "one of the Davids" tells me you probably read the Event stats posts. Well welcome to the forum and thanks for choosing a distinctive screenname. :P

Good to know, David! Thanks for stopping by (I actually do think I remember running into you on the Devroom, now that you mention it).
And thanks so much for the tips!

I love that there were so many people in attendance. That gives me a lot of hope.
Thanks, man.
PS: Could you tell us what went down on your side of the convention, David? I can understand if you don't wanna go into it, but I feel it's a godo opportunity to learn from our mistakes, maybe.

So I took a few moments to review the Otakon schedule for this year. From 6:30 to 7:30 on Friday there is a panel entitled "Mega Man: Made in Japan". It is, as far as I can see, the only Mega Man themed panel running this year. That being said it's also likely to be the most target rich environment for the Legends Never Die movement. Last year the panel was run by Ryouko of the Otakon web boards, and presumably she'd be running it this year. It's late in the game, but if someone involved in Legends never Die was attending Otakon, they could contact her and see if she'd be willing to donate any time/ do a shout out? The Otakon web boards have a private message system, which might suffice. Alternatively, she lists her website as www.rockman-exe.com/, and someone one could attempt to contact the web master address listed there? @ Raijin I did in fact read your Event Stat page on the Bright Bats mascot page. When signing up for Unity I misinterpreted what name should go where, so while my unity page is under Minigendo, all posts are attributed to David. Never really cared enough to fix it. @ Dashe I'm not the most prolix of forum goers, but we did bump into each other on occasion. Notably, you commented on my devroom post about the Legends panel I did, and quoted my overly long post regarding splitting the vote at the beginning of the battle for / against the crotch plate. @ MrMcRae I'm not sure I understand your question. I'd be happy to share any lessons learned from giving the panel, even if they are mostly generalities, but I'm not certain if that's what you're asking for. I'm not a skilled presenter, so field testing the presentation showed various ways I could improve it, but that's more a general life skill. What the experience drove home for me, more than anything else, is that Legends has more fans than you might think. While I don't know if these fans would have participated in the devroom events, they probably would have at least signed up. However, whatever advertising Capcom did seems to have failed miserably in reaching people.
Serendipity strikes it seems: www.themmnetwork.com/2011/07/24/its-otarockman-2011-learn-how-you-can-be-a-part/The Megaman panel is a coproduction of the megaman network, and they're planning on doing something Legends 3 themed, apparently.

This is Ryouko, the head panelist of the Mega Man panel at Otakon. I just wanted to say that we did make a mention of Legends 3, by showing the last trailer released, and giving information on joining the facebook campaign.
We couldn't change the entire panel's outline at the last minute, so this was the best we could do. Just wanted to let you guys know we didn't forget Legends 3. :) We had a packed house that filled a room capacity of 375 people! So a big thank you to everyone who came. ^_^
