So I guess it doesn't support this display card....I could play this game when I was using my old computer before. I live in Hong Kong, I bought it at the first day it came out. 5~7years ago? I can't really remember. It costed me something like $100 HKD (that's ~$14 in USD). I got legal copy of MML1 too, that was something like ten years ago I believe. It's voiced with English but with Chinese translation. Try running it under different compatibility settings. But just to be sure, post your computer specs (Hardware, OS, etc) and I'll have a look.

Well I can safely assume that the OS isn't the issue since I am able to run it on my system as well.
What about your display settings?

Settings aren't stored in the registry...they're stored in a CFG file in the game's install directory. I'm currently working on a 'proper' external config editor, but it's not near ready yet. Until then, use this file...it's from the Japanese version, but it should work with the Chinese version too. EDIT: Place this file in the same folder as dash2.exe Attachments:

Is there a system-side method of 'forcing' the resolution (how about forced 256 color settings) handy with you?

@ Truner: So it's possible that whatever's causing the black screen is due to either a faulty graphics driver, or some external application interfering with it.

My forecast of your idea is that you'll draw attention of former fans of this game, but the lack of 'first impression appeal'* of the game's graphics and design would not be likely to reap as many views as one would hope (if any expectations are had).
* Of course, the path through servings of poster girls Roll and Tron are another thing, but that's another outlet.
Also, too bad they don't sell those Gashapon figures from the games in 188 and Sino Plaza.

@ Truner: Somewhere in my mind, the 'localized' versions of DASH1 replace the Zenny sign with dollars. Is that true?
(Then again, Zeni used to be the common demonimator for money, until the Yen kicked in. I still find the petty increments troublesome, but I blame it on Japan's horribly high and troublesome tax rates.)

Was that the reason? I used to think that it's incompatible with 64-bit computers (having ran across a program/utility that won't run on my current laptop.
Is this a workaround for the "Only sound plays, the display stays black. Press F9 twice to exit." problem?

Well, for reference, my laptop's video card is ATI(AMD) Mobility Radeon 5650.
I never really tried playing games on a VM, I really just used them to test Windows themes and whatnot.

Hi, i know this thread is very old, but this is the first result when you google "rockman dash 2 pc black screen", i found a solution to the black screen on modern systems(I'm on Windows 8.1 x64, ati card).
The game gives black screen because uses the old directdraw and the video card is not detected correctly.
To fix, all you need to do is download the dgVoodoo 2 wrapper (dgVoodoo2_42.zip) and follow the readme instructions, basically just copy D3DImm.dll & DDraw.dll to where dash2.exe is located and you might want to enable vsync and other settings from the "DirectX" tab on the dgVoodoo configuration.
download: dege.freeweb.hu
Cheers.

...wow. It's legit, folks. Thanks for pointing us to this solution, aireca. I don't think I would've been able to properly get around this problem myself. This means that there's one less thing preventing people from being able to finally enjoy this port for themselves.

Holy crap, they still had 3DFX support still in the game after the Legends 1 porting job? What, did they think they were still in the 90's? One more thing about dgVoodoo and similar 3DFX\Glide\Voodoo wrappers like nGlide is that they can also fix many other games (mostly by setting them to max graphical settings thanks to 3DFX acceleration being emulated) with those types of programs as well. Carmageddon 2 and Interstate '76 (if you have Windows XP that is for the case of I76) come to mind. NOTE: When using dgVoodoo 2, you can give the game ant-aliasing! Turn it up to the max setting and see what you think!
