So far we've only had one poll. Capcom Unity's devroom just looks like it's exploded, and most of the people in it are arguing already. :01: That one topic has almost 1,000 posts in it now.
On the bright side, most of the people over there don't want Zero, Protoman, or Bass taking a major role, and everyone likes the little interactive details, the soda can, and Rob Smith. Still, it almost seems like they're tossing stuff at us to get us to start arguing with each other, even thought I'm 99% sure that wasn't their original intention.
I really wish they'd take the reins a bit more instead of just letting everyone go wild, you know? :06: Take care of the major stuff themselves, and give us little things to work with instead of important characters...eh. On the flip side, we do make a pretty decent (albiet opinionated) Western test audience.

I've been saying this from the beginning.  It sounded like a good idea on paper, but now the more I look at it, I can't help but think Capcom's not trying to please the fans so much as trying to pass the blame. Even just looking at the numbers, it doesn't really make much sense to base things on a poll. The design in the lead currently is still Suetsugu's by a margin of 20-something percent. That means that some 70 percent of people aren't going to get what they voted for if the poll ended right now. Majority rule doesn't even appeal to the majority of voters? Where's the sense in that? It's not even “by the fans for the fans;” it's by the biggest small group of fans, for all of the fans...:06: (I bet it looks like I'm complaining because I hate Suetsugu's design :22:) If they start doing this sort of thing for more important aspects of the game, I don't know how it's going to cause anything but division among the fans. It's not very cool. If anything's wrong with the game, I'd rather have Capcom to blame than a mob of fans who voted for some stupid ideas. I don't really want to know about or be a part of the decision making process. It's also why I hoped these polls/input would be strictly for trivial things. I wouldn't care if it were something unimportant — not that the heroine design is even important as far as we can tell so far. If the fans got some stupid little things into the game that I don't really care about that'd be fine, but if Capcom really wants to run everything by the fans first, I'm concerned. I'm very concerned. |

I'm actually less concerned after seeing the type of interaction we're getting. Fans arguing isn't really something they need to initiate. They can't shake a hornet's nest that's been vibrating non-stop since the invention of the internet. At least our control so far is being limited to choosing from a pre-approved set of options, which will make it more feasible than just opening the floor up to spitball ideas. The multitude of comments will probably be ignored by the development team like every other comment ever posted on Unity, or be distilled into the key features. Either way, I don't think we can mess it up too much.

I would guess it really depends on how much fan input they allow. As far as the design goes, they still have to count in the Japanese vote which could change results by who knows how much. I also don't think the board over there really has too much arguing between each other aside from a couple of users. The board where they're really arguing and insulting each other is on 4chan, and I wouldn't take that board serious anyway.

Yeah, they need to be careful with the fan input. 70% of people dissatisfied isn't a good number. Its a great idea, but its not being executed well so far.

Getting fans to help out with the LITTLE details, like individualizing the townspeople, would be awesome. But I seriously hope there is no Zero (or Proto or Bass) poll. That sort of thing is too easily corruptable, and there'd be no way of discerning a Legends fan's vote from a Zero fanboy's vote.

If the inclusion of Zero is based on a poll, it's basically guaranteed that he'll be in. Let's hope it doesn't come to that, but it's may be best to be ready for it. Honestly, they could probably pull it off without ruining the series. It might not be so bad. But it's too soon to tell. If none of the decisions are going to be anything bigger than this poll, it'll probably be alright. I still don't like the possibility of seeing the ideas I like shot down by the fans, though. I'd like to be able to enjoy Legends 3 without having to be part of the (so-called) majority. After all, as Legends fans, we've never been in the majority anyway. (and we're still not) |

That's democracy for you. I think the assertion that 70% of voters will be dissatisfied is just taking it too seriously. Consider the number of people that may like more than one option and just had to pick the one they like best. If they like the winning option 90% as much as they like the one they voted for, would they consider it a loss? Besides, the poll seeks to represent the varied tastes of as many fans as possible. Whether or not they ran the poll, our opinions would be the same, and there would still be a sizable amount of fans disappinted they chose that one design over the others. If you're saying "ignorance is bliss" and that we don't even have to see the other options, just look back at the concept art for MML1 and MML2, look at all the alternate designs for Tron and Roll and the like. We do eventually see the other options. Maybe there are 20% of people that would have preferred catgirl Tron over the 19% that preferred her current design. A lot of us would say it's for the better then that we didn't get the chance to choose Tron's design, but there are still 20% that might feel otherwise. The point is that most people like Tron the way she is anyway, and I think whichever of the nine designs for the new heroine wins, it will eventually feel more like a win for everybody than a loss for 70% of the people. I think I typed up too much and didn't even get my point across clearly. Maybe this can sum it up appropriately: "Lighten up, it's just the design." |

I understand this, and it's a valid point, but I'd just like to point out that I worded my post very carefully on this one. 70% of voters don't get what they voted for is all I said.. I'm sure plenty of that 70% are OK with the decision. It's just a very big slant. The difference in time, I think, is significant. Hearing about a cool idea that might've been in the game years after the fact is not a big deal. Seeing that idea get shot down by a mob of fans (worst case scenario), is an entirely different story. As far as I know. the fans didn't play any role in those decisions for the first Legends games. Like I said, I don't mind being disappointed with Capcom for making lame decisions, but if it's something we brought on ourselves, that's a different story. Probably good advice. I'm more concerned about the future polls than this one, though. |

I'm pretty sure they're smart enough not to just walk in and go, "Okay kids, Roll or Tron?" but they've done a lot of things I haven't been expecting at all since this project started. I don't know if I can honestly expect anything anymore. |

I've never seen an issue divide a fan-base so evenly. |

Yeah, CU is a bit of a mess, but it's unavoidable I think. I post on art and game dev forums sometimes, and there people often contribute things, or reply with a contribution, etc. There's some cost associated with posting. On game discussion forums than the likes, it's just opinions countered by opinions, and it's so easy to have an opinion and jot it down. Hey guys what are your favourite bands? Mine are....
I can see a whole bunch of problems with polls like these, like the flaws of aggregated intelligence, loudmouths, skewed poll options, etc.
Hmm, It's funny how they did a lot of exotic designs for Tron, but ended up with a clone of Uran (from Astroboy).

As the MMLS Official Unintentional Legends 3 Prophet, I say it ain't so! Next up from Capcom will be a Design-an-NPC Potluck, and they will never, EVER make an overtly controversial poll that could divide the community at its most fragile points, nor will they ever bring up religion, politics, or the Great Pumpkin on a first date! I'm fine with fan input, but only on an advisory level. I don't want the votecount on this heroine poll to be the final say on what the new character will look like. I want Capcom to look at the poll results, see which designs were most popular, and make the final decision on their own, taking fan wishes into account as well as the developers' vision.
As long as they do that, I don't think we'll have too many problems. If they don't...well...I'm concerned. Very concerned.
