Yep, MM&B definitely counts. MM9 really cemented it as part of the main canon.

Yeah, it's part of the main canon, but so is everything else. MM&B is as much a part of the series as the Gameboy games. There just happens to be a special subset of these games that count as numbered installments and MM&B is not part of that. The MM9 ending scene kinda needed 9 screens to not look awkward so I wouldn't put a lot of weight on it. Many seem to think MM&B should be exclusively sandwiched in between 8 and 9 as part of the main series but just think about how different/similar it is from 1-10, note that the GB games are about equally similar/different, then start wondering if MM Soccer is really different enough to be excluded. Soon enough you've roped in the entire extended series. Just keep it simple and focus on the basic number sequence. 9 comes after 8.

To put things into perspective a bit, In North America, it was roughly ten years from the time Earthbound was released on the SNES to the time that Mother 3 was released in Japan. (Technically speaking, it was slightly longer for the Japanese fans, since they had the game before we did). If your going to say MOTHER 3, then compare it to MOTHER 2. Which was 12 years. And, if you meant to say the english version for MOTHER 3, form the release of Earthbound, it was also around 12 years. If Capcom keeps us hanging like this, we might just wind up going down in gaming history as Those Guys (and Dashe) who Waited Longer Than Anybody Else for Their Series to Continue! I think MOTHER 3 and Duke Nukem Forever has us beat. MOTHER 3 had to actually sit through a game nearly finished in development and cancelled with little to no hope of resurrection. (Earthbound 64). Yeah, poor sales of Earthbound (MOTHER 2) was kinda like poor sales of Mega Man Legends 2. But atleast we didn't get a: "Mega Man Legends 3 announced for the PS2!!!---- OH WAIT, the PS3 is coming out, I guess we'll have to scrap the project and never look back!!" MOTHER/EarthBound fan-base had to endure a lot, and this (Though very VERY close) is nothing like that. We didn't have to go through that. But, I agree that Nintendo looking down on the Earthbound/MOTHER series and CAPCOM doing the same for Legends/DASH is similar, but they have a few more bloody stories to tell than we do. I'm a huge fan of both, and I know little to nothing about Duke Nukem. But from the sound of it, it sounds like their hopes have been torn inside and out. I wonder if they even have hype for the latest announcements?
