From here on out the first thing I'm going to focus on is making several GM projects for the express purpose of creating and testing game engines. Without the distractions of having to create good graphics, room design, enemy design and plot, as well as creating a proper difficulty curve and game balance, I figure that I can truly perfect the basic mechanics that the game is built from. I'm not going to spend months upon months doing only this but I do plan on putting in enough time to create solid game engines that I can use, in whole or part, in my real games.
So this is basically a place to discuss the various mechanics I'm working on and see what suggestions you guys have. I'm hoping that this can help other people with their games too as I find the biggest barrier between very simple games and those that draw you in with their complexity is how much work goes into the game engine.
In a few hours I'll get back on and post my basic principles of designing game mechanics (you can skip that part if you want) and two concepts which I have been exploring for a long time that I will finally put into practice, one of which is already under way.

Hey bdk you're going in circles man, less talky more showy, otherwise why should i believe you're competent and your ideas are accurate if you haven't even made ONE game?

Just hold on, I'm just saying this right now so that people can hear it, unlike before I know I can show you some stuff within a few weeks. Part of the reason I haven't shown much is because most of the work I've been doing hasn't been on graphics so it has been hard to put stuff up to show. With this the graphics will just be the general shape that I want and no detail except to show where certain things are facing but it will be playable.

If you can build a working GM engine that mimics the Megaman (NES) game engine, and works without needing a PRO copy of GM, then you will be my hero.

Just buy the program, is not expensive you know, and you only have to buy it once. I sacrificed hard earned money to get it, and it was totally worth it. Up until a few months i was using the cracked version, and it was a total hassle to use it because the crack only worked at times, and other times it failed horribly. I chose to take the moral high ground and buy a license, and just opening the program feels like i ingested the best male enhancement product on the market.

There are so many good game engines that are free now. There's no reason to bother with this one anymore. It was good back in the day. Unity (http://unity3d.com/unity/) is free, and it works online. Does 2d and 3d. Uses a drag and drop interface, with javascript or something if you need scripts. Panda3d has a web plugin too. Those are two options, newer, shinier, freer.
