The unity game engine is free now ( unity3d.com/unity/download/). You can use it to make games, using a point and click style interface, and there is scripting support so you don't need c. It uses Boo for scripting, which is like python, but not (I don't know why they just didn't use python). You can make 3d web browser games with it, and it has a gui so you don't need that much programming. Of course I still prefer panda3d, but unity is really shiny so it might be worth a try. What do you guys think about playing real 3d games in your browser? It's a lot cooler than flash, anyway. And you never have to install any games!

I know it's been awhile but I wanted to come back and say thanks for sharing this news. I spent a couple of days playing with Unity back at the beginning of November and had a lot of fun with it at the time. I'd like to see if I can do more with it later when I have an opportunity.

Yeah, that's okay. I would like for people to get away from the old ugly commercial GameMaker that only works on windows, to free new engines like Unity and Panda3d. I still like panda3d over unity because it's free while covering unity pro features (which costs over 1000USD). However, Unity has that snazzy graphical interface. Hey, did you check out any of the panda online demos? www.ddrose.com/~drose/plugin/index.html Imagine a multiplayer online megaman game, maybe like Arne's reaverbot city, for all the forum members. That would be sooo cool!

Anyway, i didn't reply because all that i could say would be just a plain "Oh this is cool." and the rest would be redundant, the same old " i do not know how to make 3D models, much less understand the concepts and definitions of it's architecture and i seriously do not have the time to study these things", i hate to research and not jump straight into the fray know what i mean? I'll keep using my old, ugly, dirty and stupid game maker (by the way, the hate for the program is soooo "Eh..") because is a tool i already know how to use pretty well, not because i don't want to try new stuff, but because i truly do not have the time to study a programming language, no matter how easy people claim it is. I'm a graphic artist, not really into programming, thus why i use drag and drop interfaces to make my little graphics jump around. This new engine may have a few point and click instructions, but in the end to truly make your game good you'll end up having to use a custom script, for which you'll have t know what to do and how to do it, and you'll need either someone who knows how to do it (Impossible feat when talking about internet relationships) or learn it yourself. duo or fAB or someone who knows: I was looking around Unity's homepage and found that there are two versions. It doesn't go into too much detail on what features are missing from the free version. Kinda something I'd like to know before it just ends up hogging more space on my hard drive, or I run into a dead end halfway and find out I'm missing a plug-in or something stupid like that. I want to fiddle around with a 2.5D style game, ala New Super Mario Bros. or fAB's Trap Box game. Could I feasibly do this over the 30 trial, or will all the features magically disappear halfway through making something? @mir@k: Totally off topic, but all your threads are locked. Just wanted to say I could throw together some quick BG tiles for Pocket Legends if you're accepting help or anything like that. Shoot me a PM or something, I rarely check my messages on dA..

The free version is what used to be the indie version that cost $200-300. They made it free and it retains all the same features that people were previously paying for. It's not merely a trial, unless something has changed.
I know somewhere on their site there's a list of things in the pro version that aren't in the free. I looked it over some months ago. The only really disappointing one I can recall was no realtime shadows, just blob shadows. Other than that, it seemed like it would accomodate all my 3D fan game needs.

He ll yeah, I wasn't lying when I said I wasn't abandoning Punkman DASH. Still, though, it's evolved so drastically over the last couple years in terms of both gameplay and story that it's an entirely different concept. I call it Megaman Legends 13, and it's exactly what the name implies: the long awaited thirteenth installment of the franchise. F!ck yeah. I want to wait until I have more concept art to show off and finish a very loose design doc'. At the moment I'm just perusing the internet for things to make it with, and Unity seems to fit that bill. School and actual work are coming up again though so I doubt I'll actually find a whole lot of time for it.
