Have you tried sketching in the whole basic form first, very lightly with simple shapes, just so you're sure nothing's getting cut off before putting in the detail? That helps, especially if you ink using some kind of pen because then you can erase the pencil afterward. Gel pens are generally cheap and reliable for that as long as you don't spill anything on your art. Keep it up! You gonna try blending the Prismacolors for this one? They're really good for that. I do, yes- I use light non-photo blue pencils to get the bones of the work in (simple shapes). Usually, teh form ends up near the bottom of the page, and on some occasions, it gets cut off when I scan it in, which is why I use pencils for these rough drafts- anything that needs changing, afterwards, I address as needed, then ink lines for color drafts (with fine-tip pens), as I have a little more control with them than standard pens. I'm more used to flat colors, but when applicable, I blend the prismacolors in.

Been watching a lot of Popeye, lately, so I dug up this old doodle I did. If I remember right, this bit was from King of the Mardi Gras, one of the older Fleschier shorts, which introduced animator, Jack Mercer as the voice actor for the spinach-eating sailor. It was a good thing for the studio, as the previous actor, Bill Costello, became too difficult to work with. Trivia bit aside, it was pretty quick hammering out Popeye's design, and I know I want to color this, one day. Don't know if anyone would be interested, but I started taking commissions, a few weeks ago. If anyone's interested, inquiries can be made via PM.

I think this might be the first time I've ever seen a picture of Popeye where he doesn't have at least one hand balled up into a fist. I'll have to check that episode out sometime. Good luck with the commissions!

Been a long while since I've uploaded something, so time to dust off the thread: Been watching a lot of Galaxy Express 999, so I thought of doing some art on it. As I started on the last episodes, I thought about doing one of the more unlikely characters I've seen in a long while- the Conductor. For the most part, we tend to see him as he announces the stops and times, but he does have some unusual dedication to his job, and to the passengers on the train. He comes of as bumbling and undependable, at times butting heads with either Tetsuro or the train's computer. While he sticks to the rules, he won't hesitate to step outside procedure if the situation demands actions that can save the lives of those in his charge- not often, but he does get the job done.. and he can be pretty silly at times- getting flustered if folks try to see him without his clothes on. Faults aside, he gets the job done as needed, so I thought "this guy- I'll do a work of him." A bit long-winded and silly, I suppose, but those were my thoughts as I drew him.

Following how Matsumoto puts plenty of modern morality subtext in Galaxy Express 999, The Conductor is pretty much the personification of Japanese work culture and ethics: Dedicated and faceless, but also a hint of 'willing to do the right thing'; something which is strongly restrained in modern Asian work culture (which extends to Chinese and Korean cultures).

Thank you, HF. It would have been simple to do some of the more prominent characters of the Matsumoto universe like Harlock or Maetel, but I find that roads less traveled can be more fun- I did toss around doing Tochiro Oyami for a bit- he's grown on me in the bits I see him. This one, I did last year- Murray the talking skull from The Curse of Monkey Island. I drew this on Wii U's Art Academy app. It's not bad, but I do wish they had an 'undo' option- I find it easy to make mistakes when I try to do something serious. and given the size constraints of the gamepad, I couldn't get in the top of Murray's head. But I did enjoy capturing personality- he tries to be menacing, but you can't take him seriously since he's only a skull- and most of his dialogue is pretty funny.

Tonight's entries include two old works. The first being a a light revisit down memory lane, the second, a belated joke I did, last year: The first one I did a few months ago- I did up Edgar Voldge at work in the forge: I did this one as I did my first experiment with non-photo blue pencils- in a single draft, I have sketched out what I wanted, than inked the lines on top and added color- that was before I decided to save the roughsketch as hard copies and then print out another for Inked lines/color drafts. While I can't say I like how the sleeves and right arm came out, I enjoyed drawing Edgar in one of his original elements. Incidently, I did this as an "Ask an OC' bit on DA- I decided to use him in an RP group, for now. The second one was done about a year ago, and took to account two things: The first being that around this time, Mega Man X2 was released on the Wii U's virtual console. At the same time, it was Boxing Day, so I decided to have a little fun with wordplay- As I said in an earlier post, I had done up X in boxer fashion when I did two doodles based on fighting with Flame Stag. For this one, I tried to do him in kind of a victory pose.. I ran out of room for part of his glove. It felt a bit empty, so I put in one of my regular characters, Scythe Mana in, as well. He ends up telling X that the sport has nothing to do with the holiday, though when I put this up in DA, I turned it into a impromptu comedy skit: ravenf6.deviantart.com/art/Belated-Boxing-Day-Joke-422704729Outside running out of room, the only real quip I have is with the scale- looking at it now, Scythe should be shorter than X (though in honesty, I don't know exactly how tall he is. Only thing I had to work with was that X was built to the effect he would have looked like a 16-17. The work went into the day after, so it ended up being a belated joke. At the time, I was working with muscle and build, as I was started doing fight/boxing pics with regularity- if I was to revisit this work, I bet things would be a bit different, compared with then.

Today's entries are ones I did before the year ended- one with a reflection, and the other, a story to tell.. Around Thanksgiving, I was thinking about some of my older works and had a desire to revisit part of them. This desire was quenched by a work that had me do something new: I remembered an old story I did with my OC, Edgar Voldge. About a year or so after I first penciled the young redhead into existence, I was playing the game, Demon's Crest. The theme of demons introduced to the advent of absolute power and its consequences in addition to the environments of a world of misery and wonder made me think of something- what if a human was thrust into this world? So I did a brief story in which Edgar finds himself in the Demon Realm. Not long after trying to get his bearings, he gets captured, thrown into a colosseum, and the only sign of life is the undead dragon Somulo... and it's got the boy in its sights. Cornered, Edgar draws his sword to make a stand, but something catches his attention, as well- a piece of red stone that is apparently imbued with fire magic- in fact, a shard of the Crest of Fire.. I started this one with Edgar first, then doing a double-header- a dragon, and a dead one, at that. Somulo was something of a powerful and majestic creature in life, but in death, a rotting mockery bent on revenge and destruction. That being said, drawing a dragon was a slow and meticulous process- structuring its form, then drawing on the skin and bones. I made the skin so that it was falling apart and/or sagging in different places- I like the wings and cavity on the chest- I added some fire where I could, inside the dragon's chest, the lion reliefs on the columns, and on Edgar's sword. It took a while to craft this work, but it's become one of my favorites, this past year. The second one came a few weeks after- I won an interesting auction on ebay- a three-volume collection of Dick Tracy, Chester Gould's comic yarn of a hard-hitting detective in a city overrun by gun-toting crooks and criminal masterminds. To date, I've finished reading 2/3 of the first volume. I drew the titular yellow-coated detective, ready to lay down the law- in a crime-ridden city like Chicago, one had to be ready for the worst- especially if it meant car bombs or mob shootouts. I thought about some of the capers that I read about- hoods out for revenge, crooked lawyers, and staged murder incidents. Outside the guns and chases, Dick combs over the cases much like Sherlock Holmes, meticulous attention to detail and scientific examination of the clues to solve the crimes, but many of the hoods, like all good (or bad, as the case may be) villains, the criminals never choose to surrender peacefully- usually leading to chases, traps, etc,. One thing I find interesting about Gould's style is how detailed and dynamic it can get- in the environments and in the characters: Most people will find this in the more familiar and grotesque villains Tracy would come to face with in later years, If I can , I'd love to check out some of those volumes. For now, I find myself satisfied in reading of some of Tracy's cases, and taking a shot of the squared-jawed, hard-hitting detective who never stops until he gets his man.

Today's additions are hightlights I did for two seperate occasions- one, long-expeted, the other, a surprise development. This one marked a milestone I hie, last month- My DA account amassing over 50,000 views- I thought over how to commemorate the occascion, and when I decided to do something with impact, I thought a Monster Hunter work would do. So here I am, hunting one of my old enemies- the brachydios. Still as hotheaded and explosive as ever.. This being my first time drawing this monster, it was a real touch-and-go affair, but I enjoyed capturing a bit of its ferocity. The second one, I started a couple days ago, but ended up finishing after an unexpected development: I wanted to do something unsual, so I ended up taking the cold-hearted Mr. Freeze and made him into a servbot. As I worked on it, it felt almost like something you couldn't take seriously since servbots are adorable to a fault, but once that freeze gun starts firing, I'll bet things turn different. I remember someone saying that they'd love to make this into a plushie. I finished this up after hearing that not only was The Misadventures of Tron Bonne was not only rated for PSN, but put on for sale, shortly after. I posted this on GetMeOffTheMoon, for the occasion- makes me happy to see folks get to see servbots as more than novel accessories to impede the living dead (Dead Rising)- seeing them robbing, looting, pillaging, and being loveable, be they successful or bumbling on the job.

As that one old man said in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, "I'm not dead!" This one, I did a few seasons ago. I had a desire to do something different, and this weird thought hit me: X driving an AT-AT walker. At first, I thought to just draw him in the driver's seat in the "head", but you wouldn't see all that much, so it this ended up in a fashion one would find in a gag manga (Dr. Slump, in particular) - partially squashed down vehicles, and that's a stretch given how large an AT-AT is in reality. But I also thought to see a work of X being happy, so driving one of these mechanical behemoths is reason enough to smile, even with collateral damage of its strides. A good bit of detail went into the AT-AT: The main body was simple, but the legs took a lot of work given what goes into them, and drawing it so that it was walking- which is pretty much one foot step at a time, unless it's being angled to fire its lasers, but that takes some skill on the driver's part, but I digress. ^^; This was a fun work to do.

As far as I'm aware, while there are rules regarding necroposting, I'm told in regards to the art threads, this is a case where I'm okay to do it. Over the years, I started moving towards digital media, but I still have a couple of colored pencil works. This one, I did during my HeartGold days. The idea started of with what would happen if Scythe ended up going a few rounds with a trainer's hitmonchan. I had a slight story behind it- mostly that while said trainer was making a phone call nearby, the aforementioned pokemon came out of its ball, saw a human gym nearby and grew curious, and the rest wrote itself.

Today being december 26th, it's Boxing Day in the Commonwealth nations. That being said, though, it has nothing to do with contact sport whatsoever, but sometimes I like to do joke works around this time of year. I did up Volnutt in gear about last year as needed reference for a request around the time. That one, I'll have to do in a separate post, as it's too big for this one.
