So, I finally got around to seeing the Watchmen movie. I haven't read the graphic novel in over five years, so most of the minor changes went right over my head. That's fine; I'd rather not waste the whole movie nitpicking. And considering how long it was, that would have been a lot of nitpicking.
Someone who's more fresh on the source material can correct me, but I don't remember Silk Spectre's romantic entanglements being a huge deal in the book...? To say nothing of that incredibly awkward scene in the middle of the movie (those who've seen it will know what I'm talking about). The scene itself wasn't so awkward, and I'm no prude, but it was almost as though one of the writers accidentally got a page of someone's fanfiction mixed in with the actual script. It added nothing to the plot, and it took time that could have been used to include something that was actually in the book.
It always bothers me, in a film adaptation, when the director cuts out all this material from the source because of time constraints but can somehow add in a bunch of fanservice crap that's usually pretty weak compared to the original. Give theatergoers some credit, Hollywood, there doesn't have to be multiple sex scenes to get us to watch your movie.
But, in the end, it was only a few minutes' worth of uneasy giggling between Spence and myself ("Do you suppose he had a condom stashed somewhere in that suit? What kind of example are they setting for the young people?" I about busted a gut right there in the theater. Movie dates are such fun. <3)
We agreed, though, that Rorschach was pretty damn near perfect. If I remember right, they cut out a couple of his idiosyncrasies (wasn't he always wondering if certain people were gay or not, or am I thinking of something else?), but given how politically incorrect his character is that's not too surprising. They didn't overly sanitize him, though, and that's fabulous. Rorschach has his principles and he doesn't care what you think.
Overall I really enjoyed it. What about you guys? Oh! And what good previews did you see? I can only remember a couple that jumped out at me--I'm intensely curious about the Star Trek movie, and that "Up!" Pixar thing looks really cute. Grouchy old people on fantastic adventures for the win.
