Yeah that quote was pretty sad. But for me, what hit me real hard in that episode, is when you see him waving at Ed from some train station.

Yeah, that was tremendously sad. He was one of my favorite characters.

Yeah, in their world it’s a science of sorts. Basically, all alchemic power comes from the Gate of Alchmy. So in their world, alchemy is more than just a primitive and superstitious version of chemistry. The circles are basically just a catalyst for the transmutation.
So, say you broke a glass. You could make a circle, and transmute it whole again. The Gate provides the power, the circle activates it, and the remains of the glass are transmuted into a whole glass again. Of course, those who have been to the Gate have the ability to transmute without circles, much like Ed. The Gate also has to do with why the Homunculi can’t use alchemy, except for Wrath.
As for souls, they cannot be reproduced by alchemy. Ed retrieved Al’s soul from the Gate and bound it to the armor. Tucker suggests that if you artificially implant someone’s memories into another vessel, they can imitate a soul, and the person whose memories they received. The homunculi have no soul, instead being kept alive by their incomplete philosopher’s stones (homunculi are modeled after people; they are not actually the people whom they are modeled after. For example, and this is a spoiler of sorts but has already been alluded to during the Laboratory 5 incident (avert your eyes if need be)…
Envy was modeled after Hohenheim Elrics’ and Dante’s son who had died from mercury poisoning (his current form does not reflect this, but his ‘true form’ does. He is the eldest of the seven homunculi), but since he was not truly his son, Hohenheim rejected him and left both him and Dante after deciding he didn’t love her, which is why Envy seeks to kill him, and hates his ‘half-brothers’ Ed and Al).
As for them seeking the philosopher’s stone to make them human and give them souls, this is merely Dante using them to create a new philosopher’s stone for her. Homonculi can resemble human quite well though. For example, Pride is able to have a family and grow just like a human, but in the end, they are empty inside and seek to obtain a soul to fill this void.
Tis over.
As for the part with Al’s memories, I thought that was fairly good. It wasn’t only Barry, think about it; he was unable to remember his past, Tucker mentioned that it was possible to fabricate memories, Ed says he has to ask/tell him something… And remember that he’s only a little kid. All this adds up. He had no body, he could hardly remember it, his memory was fading, and so on. I think he sort of overreacted, but it wasn’t stupid.
@ Pharoah – It’s Maes! Not May! Brigadier General Maes Hughes! But yeah, his death was sad. I remember after seeing him in the train hijack episode, my first thought was, “They’d better not kill him…”

When do they explain that whole alchemy gate thing? And be careful with revealing anything guys. I myself only seen about half of the show and it is very heavy on story and plot twist.
I don't know but the whole thing that happen with Al makes little sense to me. The best way to explain it, which you guys already have, is to say that he finally snaped after being apart from his body for so long. It finally got to him after being so calm about it for all those years.
But then when he started throwing that tantrum I couldn't help but suck my teeth and say "Why's he freaking out all of the sudden. It's not like he got that body yesterday". But whatever I agree that it was a generally smart idea but I guess I didn't like the execution of that plot point. Maybe if they spent more time building up to it. It did finally take some of the focus off Ed and give Al alittle spotlight.

I actually kind of liked that story sequence. Al is so worried that he's not real, but doesn't that in itself indicate that he is?
Also, I think it's kind of neat/sad how Ed is maturing and growing up physically and Al is not---what I mean is, Al's voice hasn't changed even though he's almost fifteen now. This would be more pronounced if Ed had actually gotten any taller.

Oh ho! That explains some. You can always rely on GustaffGlyde to straighten things out.
Hughes definitely should have gotten a longer role. Nevertheless, his death was a very nice touch. After all, what’s the point of a tragedy if it’s someone you don’t like dieing?

Nothing is ussually as good without tragedy because of its overwhelming emotional power in anything cinematic. Thats why most my favorite animes are a little tragic. Often times they are tremendously tragic.

I've only seen half of an episode of FMA. When I went to Anime north I saw the ending of an episode. The part I saw was how there was this man claiming that he could bring back the dead and he had powers. The main character somehow got the townspeople to hear him saying his powers weren't real or something but they still believed him at the end when he brought back some "birds" to life.
Man, now I wish I saw the whole episode....and now I wish they had FMA in Canada.

Canada not having an anime before America?!?!?! What is the world coming to?!? But yeah, that episode was one of the few that really had no bearing on the rest of the show that much. Spoiler..... kinda??? Well, it was the introduction of the humunculi, but you don't know that they're homunculi just yet. End kinda spoiler. That actually was the first episode I saw. It was really good because it showed the mix of alchemy and religion. One of my favorite episodes was "The Other Brothers Elrich". But sadly, I always miss some of it .

OMG, THE SEASON IS GETTING SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!! I missed the episode "Dante of the something or other Woods". Could someone fill me in?
Man, the Homunuli are soooooooo evil!!!! But I like how Lust is actually having feelings for people. Greed was really cool too when he died (no, that's not a spoiler. You could see it coming from a mile away). I wonder where it's all gonna end...

I really disliked the show when I first saw it sometime last year... or early this year. Anyways, I've watched a few more episodes since then, and yes, the new season is amazing. It's so good; plot-wise and in the enemies' abilities. The Fuhrer did that awesome sword jabbing thing with his Ultimate Eye, or whatever it was called, and everyone's just using awesome powers in general. Not to mention that everyone has a cool face 24/7 now. So yes, the latest episodes have change my opinion of the show.

In case you didn't catch it, the Ultimate Eye allows him to read his opponent's moves, and dodge/counter them. And as for why Al didn't defend himself, you'd have to be blind not to notice that he was completely shocked. Also, now we've now been filled in on how:
1. Scar got his... scar
2. Scar got that arm of his
3. What Scar has to do in order to activate the arm's abilities
4. The homunculi plan to make the Philosopher's Stone.
