Do any of you like Super Milk Chan? I think it's the most hilarious anime out there! Every time I talk to someone about it, they say "That's not Japanese", but guess what!?!?! IT IS. The subbed version is just as hilarious as the dubbed. My favorite characters would have to be the ant family. WELL TALK ABOUT IT. OR SQUID BANK WILL REPOSESS YOUR HOUSE.

I’d have to agree with Terra on this one. I suppose it’s just no my style. I just don’t find it funny at all. I mean, I like shows like Futurama (but then again, who doesn’t), and I’ll even say that I found ATHF interesting at times, but Milk-chan was just plain boring. I just don’t like the style of comedy it presents. The dub is well done; it’s just that I find it boring… Actually, most people say the dub is better and that the original Japanese version was just plain awful, the reason being that ADV added in some of their own stuff that was actually funny.
And I swear, that landlord sounds like Teisel every now and then…

I thought the original Milk-Chan shorts were funny. "Oh! Super Milk-Chan" was the one that sucked.

The shorts are funny (especially the Middle Aged Man Hunter one.... I think that's a short....) but in general it's funny. I don't know why you guys don't think it's funny. I guess it's maybe too Japanesey for some people. ADV (whom I HATE BTW, cause they have the worst anime IMHO) actually made an "American" version, where they rewrote the episodes and put in jokes Americans would actually get, but it's just not as funny to me. I love all the kooky TV shows they watch like the Tire Brothers show. THE THEME SONG IS HILARIOUS. And Pastel Mr. Shin is even funnier! Oh well, most people look for different humor in anime, and this is far from the norm or anime humor...

I don't doubt the American version sucks because ADV has the most awful sense of "American humor." Compare their rewrite of Azumanga Daioh the manga to an early scanslation, like the one I was following before ADV picked it up. Not only do they substitute Japanese jokes for the LAMEST POSSIBLE American-friendly jokes ever, they changed a manga that is basically for everyone to fit into their Teen category by spicing up said jokes with more "teen-appropriate" language choices. Changing "measurements" to "bra size" on page one... What a necessary substitution! I'm so glad I have ADV to translate my manga because I'm too braindead to understand jokes if they're not written in childishly slangy and obvious terms!
I have seen Milk Chan, once. I should probably give it another chance... I don't watch much Adult Swim these days.

Super Milk Chan... What can we say about it... It’s not necessarily bad, but it does use a variety of humor that most people seem to dislike. It almost seems like a Japanese version of something like Sealab2021 or something. I personally don’t like it, but I can see how others might, and it does have its good points (who can hate that skeleton doctor fellow with the eye patch? He may have very little personality in what he says, but he sure sounds cool saying it).
Is there a consistency in their humor? I've never noticed... But now that you mention it...

“Oh! Super Milk-chan” is the Japanese version... Though I suppose you meant you liked the older version that consisted of 8-minute shorts, which is not the same as “Oh! Super Milk-chan” (And not the same as the shorts within "Oh! Super Milk-chan").
The American version is “The Super Milk Chan Show” and was the same as the Japanese in humor. And is it such a crime for them to add in a version where the pop-culture references are changed? I mean, if they took out the original in favor of it, maybe, but they didn’t; they're both there. Not everyone listens to nothing but J-pop and few Americans keep up with the Japanese culture so a lot of possible funny jokes would be lost on people (Heck, if I told asked my friend what he thought of “Morning Musume” and the like, and he’d think they were some kind of cereal). I mean, if I told a joke that consisted of a vicar and a layperson, and then made another version that consisted of a minister and a construction worker, would the joke be ruined? The joke is the same even though the people changed. The reason the ADV version is marked as better by some is because they went and made several live-action skits that people found entertaining, at least more so than the show itself. The Japanese comedy is actually fully intact if you’ve ever actually watched the show.
As for Feldinaut’s complaint… The scanlators and ADV choose different words. ADV may make stupid decisions at times, but not every word has an exact equivalent in English so it’s up to whoever translates it. Most shows they dub are fairly good. For example, I liked the Excel Saga dub more than the original (alright, aside from them screwing up Excel’s voice it was done well). The people they chose to do the voices did a good job and were able to either match (Hyatt) or do better than the original (Kabapu). And look at the anime of old. ADV does much better than most companies, but for some reason it seems to be a fad these days among anime fans to hate ADV (Heck, when you get people from FUNimation commenting on how distasteful and wrong the criticism of a rival company is, you know something isn’t right). Of course, most of those people who hate ADV are like “OMG they changed bento to lunchbox! The series is ruuuuiiiiiinnnnneeeeddddd!!!!!!!11111oneoneone”. Fortunately, the majority of people are able to keep their senses about them. To quote a poll from ANN which ranked all of the US based dubbing companies –
1. ADV Films – 435 votes (37%) 2. Geneon Entertainment – 300 (21.2%) 3. Bandai Entertainment – 246 (17.4%) 4. FUNimation – 105 (7.4%)
Obviously, there were a whole lot more on the list since it included every US dubbing company, but I figured I’d just use an shortened list
I mean, personally I’m a bit more of a Geneon guy myself, but ADV does a darn good job compared to the rest of the dubbing industry. They actually put some effort into their work whereas most companies just translated and figured it’d be good to go. I mean, at least ADV was made by anime fans instead of a bunch of greedy people just in it for the money. I mean, would we rather have the horror that is 4Kids dubbing our anime? ADV may not be perfect, but they are by far the best we have.

I don't think Milk Chan is very funny but I do think it is smart. If you notice that every episode is a satire(not sure if it's spelled that way) on all television. Pretty much all TV shows are the same exact thing all over again. They use a tired out formula that is very dull and only entertaining if the jokes and/or action pluged into the equation are clever. If you notice(it's not hard to) every episode of Milk Chan start with them at their house watching somekind of TV show(one time it was that videogame), then she talks to the prez(which is always hilarious) and gets some kind of mission, after that they usually cut to that ant family(which always makes me sad because the man doesn't know how to please his woman so he only becomes more and more paranoid and sometimes rightfully so.), then they go to that factory to get somekind of invention and they always have the robot talk about her dady, etc. etc. Whats more is that they try to keep things fresh in shallow ways(just like normal TV) like when they change the color of the Dr. Eyepatche's eyepatch or when they change the figurines on the Prez. desk(my faves where Yoda and Micheal Jackson . Also about half way through the series they add gimicks(the episdoe where all the sound effects where preformed by that man and woman/ the episode that showed the bloopers)because in normal television the ratings sag so they try stunts to bring them up. By exaggerating the faults that normal TV shows have they make you realize how stupid most shows are. And let you apprietiate truly innovative show. In that sense it is a genius show. So I like it.
