I’d sort of have to agree with Gren and fab. I liked that Final Fantasy IX had finally left the futuristic settings of the previous two behind (… last time I checked a machine gun is deadlier than a sword, and yet somehow the sword always wins… and seeing Cloud using a cell phone* in Advent Children was just… odd. At least it’s good to know ol’ Rufus didn’t die after all… Poor fellow, he just wanted to rule the world. Is that so much to ask?), but I have to agree that most of the game was simply mediocre.
The bosses were just old bad guys from the earlier parts of the series and, unless you avoided random battles like the plague, the bosses were rather easy (Garland and the Four Fiends came from Final Fantasy I for example, and Kuja is like some sort of cross between the body of Sephiroth and manipulative ways and twisted genius of Kefka mixed with the fashion sense of a cheap prostitute just to make things interesting). The game is, of course, made to have plenty of references to previous parts of the Final Fantasy series such as the castle Pandemonium from Final Fantasy II, and Cid’s wife Hilda is no doubt a reference to Final fantasy II’s Princess Hilda.

As for the whole Final Fantasy VII thing, Final Fantasy VII isn’t bad, it just has a lot of people who claim it’s the holy grail of gaming and they haven’t even played the entire series (All of them except the original Final Fantasy III have been released in America, and Final Fantasy III is currently being made for the DS, so there is little excuse not to have played them with all the ROMs and re-releases… now they just need to release Radical Dreamers and that’d finish the Chrono series for the time being).
It just sort of annoys me that almost every Final Fantasy site only covers Final fantasy VII through the current Final Fantasy, or they only go as far back as Final fantasy IV, and they seem to either not care about or completely ignore the history of the series, even going so far as to call them “pointless” and “boring” as they drool over and worship whatever Square-Enix gives them.
In my opinion, each succeeding Final Fantasy has been getting steadily worse. They aren’t bad, but they just don’t draw you in like they used to. It’s more like “Hey, Final Fantasy XIII. Hurrah, an easy way to waste a weekend with mindless button pushing as stereotypical characters have mental breakdowns while we mosey on through the game, now made of 60% recycled storylines (Square cares about the environment you know…)” these days as oppose to the sheer feeling of excitement and anticipation I had when I started playing the older games… (I was disappointed with Final Fantasy X’s storyline, and button mashing has been a trait of the Final Fantasy series since Square decided to tone down the difficulty.)
In my opinion, Final Fantasy VI is still the best. I like a good story line with characters that have depth, and that’s what Final Fantasy VI had. Besides, a lot of the current installments of the Final Fantasy series have been derived from Final Fantasy VI and its predecessors (The beloved Aerith’s theme (or Aeris if you still use that improper name… darn translations…) is actually originally from Final Fantasy VI (Epitaph), along with Final Fantasy VIII’s “Eyes on Me” (Relm). Oh, and anybody remember the Dragoon from Final Fantasy IV that went by the name of Kain Highwind? sound familiar Final fantasy VII fans?).
Aside from that, I just liked Kefka. Eh, I don’t care too much for these crazy god incarnate bosses of today. Kefka was just a good old power hungry genocidal human lunatic with a fashion sense just short of Kuja’s… unique style (At least he wore pants…). Just some quotes from Kefka that proves my point:
"Ahem. There's SAND on my boots " –Kefka
"This is sickening! You sound like chapters from a self-help booklet! Prepare yourselves!" –Kefka
"Poor old...oh well, what a worthless excuse of an emperor!" –Kefka
"Edgar, you pinhead! Why do you have to live in the middle of nowhere?!" –Kefka
"I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate you!" –Kefka
"Ooh! They're warm to the touch!" –Kefka
"Wait? Do I look like a waiter?" –Kefka
"Son of a submariner!" -Kefka
Kefka was just more of a normal final boss, not like those other guys who just kind of show up at the end with little or no explanation (“Hi, I’m Necron and I’ll be your final boss this evening. I’m a little new at this whole “final boss” gig, so bear with me. You see, the union went on strike this morning and I was the only one they could get in time to take the job. Got to provide for the little ones you know…”).
Anyways, just in case people decide to dislike me for not carving “I love Final Fantasy VII” into my soul, we all have differing opinions on which Final Fantasy is the best. Heck, I have one friend who thinks Final Fantasy IX is the pinnacle of gaming, and yet another who swears Final Fantasy X is mankind’s ultimate achievement. There are also others who love Final fantasy IV, and you can’t deny that that was a great game, and those who are obsessed with Final Fantasy V and its job system, or those who went to great lengths to obtain a copy of Final Fantasy III and claim that it’s the best.
Here at MMLS I’m definitely in the minority as far as my fondness of Final Fantasy VI is concerned, but we are all entitled to our opinion. You may think it crazy that I don’t worship the very words “Final Fantasy VII”, but I’m sure other people think it odd of all of you who don’t worship the X or Zero series and instead like the Legends series the most. (Final Fantasy VII is number three on my favorites list, so I don’t dislike it. I just dislike the rabid fans who offer human sacrifices to Final Fantasy VII on a daily basis...)
Now, I must be off before the angry mob comes and demands that my vital organs be ripped from by body via my left nostril and then hung from a cliff and set on fire…
*Eh?

As usual, I got way off subject... but who cares?
