The Nintendo 3DS is getting a pricedrop; dropping in price from $250 to $170 on August 12th in the US. Those that already have a 3DS will get 20 free games (10 NES, 10 GBA, some exclusive) in compensation. www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/fttgI7OsQIB1tZqRMa5CtT45KLrmNkAYwww.joystiq.com/2011/07/28/3ds-price-drops-to-170-on-august-12/www.joystiq.com/2011/07/28/current-3ds-owners-eligible-for-free-games/www.wired.com/gamelife/2011/07/nintendo-3ds-price-drop/kotaku.com/5825495/nintendo-3ds-gets-sudden-massive-price-dropI know the Nintendo 3DS isn't your favorite handheld around here lately, but man, that is one of the biggest pricedrops in video game history! Cutting a third off the price is a huge change. Sure sales were sluggish, but they weren't THAT bad. I would guess that it's probably a combination of trying to boost sales and making sure they can take down the PS Vita next year. Those compensation gifts are alittle uh, not that great, but it's a wise move by nintendo. By releasing old games digitally, it costs them next to nothing. And users get free stuff and great games. It may not work, but it's a smart play. The good news is, the 3DS's price was an experiment. The wii sold so much it was flying off the shelves faster then they could put them back on, which annoyed nintendo cause that meant they could have been making $50 more per wii and get a little less sales but more profit. So for the 3DS they increased it's price. By lowering the price this early, they are more or less admitting that the price experiment was a failure, and that they should have gone lower. This means that the Wii U will likely follow a similiar pricing scheme as the wii, but maybe a hair higher. I guess $300.

Pricing 'experiments' geez. That is a huge price drop, and giving away 20 games? That doesn't sound too good for Nintendo.

Cutting a third off the price is a huge change. Sure sales were sluggish, but they weren't THAT bad. I would guess that it's probably a combination of trying to boost sales and making sure they can take down the PS Vita next year. Nintendo seems to be selling 3DSes well enough. I read that they didn't meet their goal for launch sales by a considerable amount (400,000), but they also sold quite a few (3,600,000). They've been getting really bad press, though, and sales in the last few months haven't been great. Just about everywhere I look, people are talking about how horrible Nintendo is handling this 3DS thing. This seems to be something to keep people buying 3DSes until the major first-party games come out later in the year. And, yeah. PSVita's competitive price point probably was a major factor in that. I really doubt Sony will be able to match $170 any time soon. At $250, Nintendo set their price as high as they could get away with, but Sony set theirs as low as they could afford. Shoot, it sounds fantastic to me. I was psyched to even hear they were releasing NES/GBA games on the 3DS Virtual Console (there are none so far). Now, for being an early adopter I get twenty of those free? And not just random crappy games, but iconic, 1st-party classics? It's probably not worth the $80 pricedrop, although if you figure they'd charge an average of $4 for each game, maybe it is worth $80. But either way, they could've just as easily given the early adopters nothing. I honestly think this will end up being a good thing for Nintendo.

I guess this is good news for people who were hesitant on picking it up because of the price, since it’s very reasonable now. I am happy that I didn’t buy one (although my brother did), even with the free NES games, I would have been cross that they cut the price so soon. I’m still going to wait on picking one up, just to see if a redesign happens. >_>

I'm pretty surprised by this, but pleased that people will get "fair" compensation. Some of the titles may not be worth $80 to people, but it all depends on how you look at it. When I buy something, I acknowledge that I'm taking the risk that it'll drop later, but promise myself that I'm not going to be bothered by it in any way, shape, or form. The 20 downloadable games are icing on my cake, metaphorically speaking.
It's not the first time consumers/fans were used as guinea pigs, and it won't be the last. At least we didn't get 100% completely screwed over on the matter...

Totally posted in the wrong forum version of this news bit, but I saw that other post first in the MML3 forum section XD
I was almost Pissed off when I saw the price drop, but 20 free game Iconic classics from the past? I can handle that. [some of them I've never played before.] And 10 GBA titles not slated for sale to eshop users in the future? I think thats worth it. Consider this, if you will, How much did a GBA game sell new? 25-30 bucks? Ok, now Digital distribution if done right knocks some price tag down a bit... so on the eshop a GBA game should cost 10 - 15 bucks a pop? and we get ten? From a "what they could likely charge" standpoint, thats a fantastic prize for us early buyers. [even if "early buyer" means 2 days before announced price cut.] I wonder if GameStop will Honor their return policy. >.>; [potentially getting my money refunded to the price drop price, since I got it within 30 days of said drop.]

I was gonna say that's complete bullcrap, but 20 games is really nice I can't wait for the 12th The free stuff isn't actually coming until September 1st, and that's just the NES ones. I'm not 100% sure if they plan to release all the NES ones at the same time, or spread them out over a few weeks either. (It sounds like it's all at once, but I could see it going either way.) And the GBA games are listed for somewhere around the end of the year. If you want the freebies, make sure you sign on to the eShop sometime between now and August 12th when the price drops. You'll miss your chance if you don't! I'm probably going to be logging on once a day just in case.

20 is pretty crazy, but smart by Nintendo, they've been pretty ready to give free stuff away to sell the 3DS (loves his free 3D excitebike), and since it's downloads, Nintendo doesn't really loose anything since most of the games (minus a few classics) wouldn't be on anyone's top ten download list anyway.

If I base myself on the games in the GBA side, there's a couple in there that I have yet to play. Nintendo is saving me the trouble to find the originals. I don't really mind the price drop here. I bought it because I thought the price was worth it.

That is quite a bargain. I am also amazed that they would compensate those who had bought the 3DS already by giving them 20 free games (even though they are 10 NES games and 10 GBA games and / exclusive).

They're here! The Ambassador games are online a day “early!” (Timezones, for the win! Someday we'll learn to translate those...) You can head over to Nintendo's website, for the instructions. Basically, if you're an Ambassador, the games will already be in your Download History, and therefore you'll be able to “Re-download” them at no cost, as many times as you like. (Forever. There's no chance of missing out on the deal as long as you're in the program.) The full list of games was revealed yesterday as: - Super Mario Bros
- Ice Climbers
- Balloon Fight
- The Legend of Zelda
- Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
- Donkey Kong Jr.
- Yoshi
- Wrecking Crew
- Metroid
- NES Open Tournament Golf
Remaining GBA games have yet to be revealed.
Hop online and get them, if you're eligible!

Woah, so they are. Awesome. Really looking forward to playing some Metroid- my first time playing the original- as well as Wrecking Crew, Balloon Fight, and Yoshi. I've never played any of them before, but from what I've heard they're all pretty good games. So all we've got to look forward to now is the GBA games I guess. It's going to be fun finding out what they are. Personally I'm hoping we'll get stuff like Fire Emblem and Advance Wars, but I get the feeling they'll be more like the NES games- a few top-tier games along with some not-as-recognized but still worthy titles.
