Recently, I had been recommended this video on Youtube about a hundred thousand times, regarding the question of how many mainline Super Mario games there are. After finally watching the video, I found it pretty interesting (by the way, the original Yoshi's Island is 100% mainline and I won't back down on this.) This got me to thinking. "How many Mega Man games are generally agreed to be mainline titles?" So, about a week ago, I decided to ask members of the Mega Man fan community what their opinions were. I tediously went through the list of every single Mega Man game ever published (as well as some that technically aren't video games at all, just to be as thorough as possible), divided them all by series, meticulously ordered them all by order of release date, and created a giant Google Forms survey that I shared in my Facebook group, Mega Man Hell & Bass, which currently stands at 6.6K members. My good buddy Bowen Aero also shared the link to the survey in a couple of MM fan Discord servers he happened to be a part of, including the MMLS server, so some of those reading this probably participated in it.
I let the survey run for about a week, occasionally peeking at the results and scratching my head, and earlier today I closed the poll to collect and organize the data. Now that the results are in and organized, I figured this would be the best place to make a long-form post about this. Without further ado, let's look at this all, shall we?

GENERAL INFORMATION
I only got a sample size of 47 total participants. It's rather small, especially considering how many people could have potentially taken part and didn't, but it's frankly more than I expected, which was about 15. I also gave the option to skip series, so people only had to give an opinion on series they considered themselves educated about. This said, each individual series has an individual sample size, so it's important that I disclose the exact number for each so as to give a clearer picture of each set of percentages.
Mega Man Classic: 45 participants
Mega Man X: 45 participants
Mega Man Legends: 40 participants
Mega Man Battle Network: 38 participants
Mega Man Zero: 43 participants
Mega Man ZX: 42 participants
Mega Man ZX: 42 participants
Mega Man Star Force: 36 participants
I separated certain games on the Mega Man Battle Network survey based on their Japanese release dates. White Version is separated from Blue Version because White Version is the original Rockman.EXE 3, whereas Blue Version is Rockman.EXE 3 Black, which released separately in Japan. Team ProtoMan is separated from Team Colonel because Team Colonel released two months later in Japan. Any split-version games that share the same Japanese release date, such as Battle Network 4 and 6, are only given one entry on the poll. This had a...weird side effect, as you'll see shortly.
The only mandatory question on the entire survey was the very first question, "Do you consider yourself an expert on Mega Man?" The results were 63.8% yes, 36.2% no. 30 to 17. Ultimately, this doesn't really affect the overall question, but just thought it was an interesting tidbit. Now that this is handled, let's talk about the results. Rather interesting, I have to say.
UNANIMOUSLY AGREED TO BE MAINLINE (100%)

Mega Man 2 / Rockman 2: Dr. Wily no Nazo (NES, 1988)

Right out of the gate, you can see that this is already pretty strange. A very large chunk of numbered titles in this franchise are not actually 100% unanimously considered mainline, even if only by one or two votes. I especially have to call into question the one person who voted Zero 1, 2 and 4 as mainline, but not 3 for some reason. Perhaps a misclick, perhaps a troll, perhaps a bizarre personal opinion. The world may never know. Also curious is the complete lack of Legends or Battle Network titles. Somehow, not a single title in either series reached 100%. Rather odd, but I suspect that there was trolling afoot in regards to those two. Let's press onwards.

Mega Man Star Force 3: Black Ace & Red Joker / Shooting Star Rockman 3: Black Ace & Red Joker (DS, 2008) - 91.7%
As one can see, this is where most of the numbered titles went. A margin of only one to three votes kept these from being unanimous, which is frankly kind of silly if you ask me. You can see some very weird trends in here. The Star Force series seemed to have diminishing returns in terms of mainline acceptance as it went along, and god only knows what's going on in the Battle Network series. I suppose it's time to address the elephant in the room regarding that...which I'll do with the next section.
GENERALLY UNDERSTOOD AS MAINLINE (75%-89.9%)
Mega Man Classic
Mega Man & Bass / Rockman & Forte (SNES, 1998) - 77.8%
Mega Man Legends
The Misadventures of Tron Bonne / Tron ni Kobun: Rockman DASH Series (PSX, 1999) - 75%
Mega Man Battle Network
Mega Man Battle Network 5 Team ProtoMan / Rockman.EXE 5: Team of Blues (GBA, 2004) - 89.5%
Mega Man Battle Network 5: Double Team DS / Rockman.EXE 5 DS: Twin Leaders (DS, 2005) - 81.6%
Mega Man Battle Network 6 Cybeast Falzar & Cybeast Gregar / Rockman.EXE 6: Dennōjū Falzer & Dennōjū Glaga (GBA, 2006) - 81.6%
MM&B and TMoTB are about where I expected them to be, but that's not what we're concerned about. No, no. Somehow, through reasoning beyond my understanding, Team ProtoMan is at 89.5% while Team Colonel sits at 97.4%. To make matters even weirder, up until a day ago, Team Colonel was the only Battle Network game that sat at 100% in the poll. I cannot fathom why this would be the case, even factoring in my admittedly minimal understanding of the Battle Network series. This is like asserting that Pokemon Red is a mainline title, but not Blue. This discrepancy doesn't exist for BN3 White & Blue Versions, which received the exact same amount of votes as one another, which just baffles me even further. If there are any Battle Network buffs reading this, please fill me in on what's going on here if there's any reason beyond simple bias. (I'd also like an explanation regarding BN6 being substantially less accepted the other numbered titles, if you have any.)
To prevent this post from becoming an absolute sea of text, I'll continue the results in the thread.
