Secret Santa Art Exchange 2018: No Prizes Edition
Are you an artist? Well, first of all, my condolences. Second of all, you should participate in our annual holiday art exchange! I appreciate your sympathy. How do I participate?Anyone with an account here or in our Discord server is allowed to enter. 1. Provide us with a Legends-related art prompt that is at most five words long. 2. When signups close, you'll randomly receive someone else's prompt by DM. 3. Create a visual interpretation of your prompt and DM it to us. 4. On the 25th, we will post everyone's creations for the world to enjoy. That was too easy to read. Please expand those bullet points into paragraphs.I like you, we'll get along. The goal of limiting prompts to five words is to give the artist who receives it latitude for interpretation. This in turn also means that the art you receive back is more likely to be something unexpected. We hope that this makes the exchange more enjoyable for everyone involved. In the spirit of this, we ask that you not go out of your way to craft extremely limiting prompts. We also ask that you not request original characters or crossovers. Also, although this event does not have any rules against gore, violence, sexual innuendo, etc. (beyond what is in the general forum rules), we ask that everyone be cognizant of each others' comfort zones. If you're unsure, just try to keep it family-friendly. If you have any specific concerns related to subject matter, feel free to let us know. Something we always try to emphasize is that you don't need to be good at art to participate in this event. You can sign up even if you've never drawn anything before in your life. This event is about exchanging gifts with other members of the community, not producing masterpieces. If that sounds appealing to you, we encourage you to join. To those who do have some experience with art, we encourage you to challenge yourself by working a bit outside of your comfort zone. Perhaps try a new method of working, or a new style, or unfamiliar tools. This is entirely optional and you can produce your art in any way you like. But wouldn't it be nice to round out the year with a bit of artistic experimentation and growth? As far as acceptable media, we're pretty lenient and simply ask that you create something in which the visuals are a core part of the work. For context, we've accepted such things as ASCII art, live video, and playable games in the past. Examples of things we are not really looking for include fan fiction and music. That said, if you produce something like that for someone else as a gift, we're certainly not going tell you that you can't give it to them. Finally, if the person who receives your prompt is unable to create a finished product, try not to take it personally. Everyone is busy at this time of the year and these things do happen. And besides, this event is about giving, not just receiving. I am enthused by your wall of text. What's the timeline for this?
We're starting a bit later than in previous years, so the timeline is more compressed. That said, these are soft deadline and exceptions can be made. Although the goal is to get all the art up on the 25th, we're sure your recipient will appreciate your gift regardless of when it's sent in. Signups: Dec. 10th - Dec. 14th
Arting: Dec. 15th - Dec. 24th
Results posted: Dec. 25th And that's everything you need to know. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Signups are now open.

A brief aside. Long-time members will note that it's been eight years since I've last managed this event! To celebrate my glorious return to power, I have cut the event's budget to the bone and am using the savings to buy myself a yacht. I'm told that this is how dictators are expected to celebrate such occasions and I wouldn't want to cause any awkwardness. I can probably get a really nice yacht too with our decadent posting budget. You'll notice a few changes from previous years. There is no new forum badge, no bonus challenge, and there will be no preview period where we cycle artwork on the main site. The main reason for this is simply that all of us mods have a lot less time than we did a decade ago when this was all new, and these simplifications will make the event easier to manage going forward. They also help to refocus the event on its original goals of encouraging giving and artistic growth. Big thanks to all three of you who will continue participating. =P Let's make some art.

Also, by posting here I sign up, or was there a link I missed? There's no form or anything, you sign up by signaling your intent to participate and giving us a prompt. You've done that, so you're in.

LETS GET ARTZY. ... I really ought to find some more art-related events to challenge myself. But I still will never give up on this one. I promised one day that I would improve my first ever made Secret Santa and I will stand by that word.... someday. Regardless. My prompt will be the following.... *thinks for like 5 minutes* *puts on shades and makes the gruffiest voice he can muster.*
"I never asked for this."
I KNOW, no crossovers. But how can you tell if it is one?

I have missed many years of Secret Santa Art activities, so I must seize the opportunity. I'd like to draw some clips of my own Legends story. There will be some original characters in my painting. So I determined such a title "Together with Mother Units".
Besides, I have a question. Where shall I post my painting, at this post or artwork board?

I KNOW, no crossovers. But how can you tell if it is one? There isn't a hard line. References/shoutouts to other series are acceptable, although we'd like all the art to be Legends-centric. The best guidance I think I can give when it comes to choosing how to interpret your prompt is to try to think about whether or not the recipient might like it. It is a gift, after all. For example, I'd guess that HF wouldn't have any problems with major MGS references. If you're unsure and want to be safe, just stick to the Legends canon. If you have an idea that you're uncertain about and would like a second opinion, feel free to message me. I'd like to draw some clips of my own Legends story. There will be some original characters in my painting. ... Besides, I have a question. Where shall I post my painting, at this post or artwork board? Appreciate the interest in participating. However, I'd ask that you not include any original characters in your gift art (unless you're certain that your recipient is alright with that, I suppose). When you've completed your gift, please privately message it to me. It will be posted publicly along with everyone else's on the 25th. I am all about suffering with art for no reward. Doing my best to prepare aspiring artists for their chosen career path.

For example, I'd guess that HF wouldn't have any problems with major MGS references. There has been crossover material accepted prior, but the rule of thumb I would go with is if the 5-word phrase does not explicitly have conditions that require knowledge of other franchises. I mean, if I somehow interpret one as a crossover with MGS (as you kindly pointed out) while not being blatant about it there really isn't much that can be done is there?
Anyway I digress, here's to unpaid overtime. :v

Geez guys. I was just poking a little fun. You can tell by my badges that this is not my first time surfing the sea of questionable material and meme-inducing art.

Hey guys, hopefully y'all will enjoy Secret Santa to its fullest despite the cut in labor that it will be receiving. Worth noting: More than likely fAB will still upload all completed works to the Fan Artwork Gallery where the rest of them are at, since that procedure is painless and isn't as time-sensitive as getting a banner rotation active on Christmas Eve. You guys can also look to that page for inspiration from years past to help with your submissions when it's time to think about your recipient's phrase. That's all I have time for, time to dash off to work for now!
