Twenty years ago today, an electronics company named Sony that we all know very well released in North America their first stab at the video game console market. The little grey boxlike console running black CDs was the unfortunate fruit of a deal gone wrong with Nintendo, but the console sold well enough that it became a major hit with everyone. It is the console that brought us Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and gave us a look at a world covered in endless water that Megaman fans would still be wishing someone would revisit today. Yes, today Sony released in North America the console that would redefine the console wars: The Sony PlayStation, a console that literally redefined my life. Praise be to PlayStation. Happy 20th Anniversary, Sony.

Embarrassingly enough I only got a Playstation because I was really, really into Rugrats at the time and wanted to play Search for Reptar. It didn't take long to realize there were better things out there for it.

Definitely helped shift the war into Sony's favor. Goodbye letters, hello shapes!
I had tons of fun and replay value with games on it. I only wish the Lara Croft series didn't have to be so blatantly linear. Made the games incredibly difficult since the internet was still a baby and therefore, had a lack of reliable guides. Want help? Call this number and get charged 10 cents per minute!

PSX was my first console, so it definitely holds some memories for me. I remember those 'demo discs' that came with the console where you could sample different games like Tomba, Jersey Devil, Hot Shots Golf, and Gran Turismo. Of course it goes without saying that the PSX had memorable games like Mega Man Legends, among many others. Embarrassingly enough I only got a Playstation because I was really, really into Rugrats at the time and wanted to play Search for Reptar. It didn't take long to realize there were better things out there for it. Whoa, that was my first game when I got a PSX for Christmas back in '98. At the time I didn't know anything about the other games that the console had to offer, but at the time the game was a really fun experience. The mini-golf level was fun, and I remember a couple of those "Hard" levels being nightmare fuel at the time. I vaguely remember Chuckie being trapped in a toy store overnight and having to avoid creepy jack-in-the-box toys. *shudders*

I got the console from my aunt, also for Christmas of '98, and she went off-book for the game and got Frogger instead. And no memory card. Rugrats was my second. Frogger was...about the same quality as Rugrats, but my sister was into it. As far as Rugrats went, I really liked the hide-n-seek level and actually never found Cynthia in the sewers because the disc got too scratched. I did beat the game, though. It'd have been cool to fully explore more of the Rugrats' houses and the neighborhood normally. Maybe kick some cans. There's just something about exploring a video game town and talking to the locals that does it for me. ...And I also remember that demo disc. Plus the ones Pizza Hut gave away for free, with Tony Hawk and Ape Escape and Spyro and Final Fantasy VIII and some other less interesting games. I heard there was a third one with Metal Gear Solid on it, but I didn't get that one. It almost makes up for the crappy pizza they had there.

I remember it was my brother who originally wanted the PSX when we were young. I didn't see much at first until I rented MediEvil- it was something different, funny, and memorable. What really set on that path was a number of games I came across in passing: Breath of Fire III, Brave Fencer Musashi, and (of course) Mega Man Legends: This game truely felt like I was in another world.. Being a teen and not having a job, most of them, I let go as I grew older..
After I moved East and started working, I looked around and at an old game shop- I found most of the games in question- it was like stepping back in time and playing them again, for the first time.

Really liked the PS1, liked the PS2, thought the PSP was okay, tolerated the PS3, started to see huge problems with the Vita, and don't want to go near a PS4. I really miss Japanese gaming being on top when it comes to consoles. Nintendo seems to be the only company that can keep up the quality, yet even they struggled with the Wii U at first.

My first games on the PlayStation were Rockman X3 (I loved the cutscenes added to this one, even if the music felt weaker in parts) and Ray Tracers. I got the MML/RMD series (and Symphony of the Night) a bit later; excellent memories throughout.
