Apparently this happened at SGC 2014.If you were to ask my opinion on it, though, I'm actually not feeling it. If this were an original game being proposed for consideration, then yeah, take my money, Inafune, but the more I think about it, the less appealing trying to recreate the Mega Man timeline as a whole gets. That was my biggest beef about Mega Man--too many spinoffs led to too much fighting over them. You'd get people trying to shoehorn elements from their favorite series into a different series and not enough people stepping back and going, "Let's just appreciate that there are a lot of different things going on and let people enjoy what they enjoy in peace." What do you think about something like this happening five or ten years down the road?

I seen this, and well...its great and all...but why not create something new as opposed to knocking off your old sources so many times? Hes already doing it twice here (Mighty and Gunvolt), Seeing him jumping into the thought of yet ANOTHER knock off styled game is just not thrilling anymore....plus he doesn't even know if Mighty's going to sell well or not yet.
Come on Kenji, you've got your own studio now. Show us what new and exciting things you can create- not what we already know you have done before. You keep talking about being ahead of the gaming business, yet you're just recycling old and used ideas. Take a step up here.

It's not so much the act of knocking off his old sources that's got me, it's the fact that he's considering making the Legends knockoff into a spinoff (again!) of a series that isn't a guaranteed hit yet. Having spinoffs this early doesn't make sense. If it were just a matter of him going "Yeah, I'm going to make a Legends knockoff and let it do its own thing," then that'd be setting a foundation for another potentially lucrative IP instead of just making it a side thing to follow up his primary cash cow. Not!Legends ought to have a chance to become a primary thing of its own. I liked ASG because it didn't seem to have anything to do with Mighty No. 9 and I'd been hoping he'd take BN/SF and Legends into different directions, too. Split the whole thing up and your fanbase'll be much healthier later.

"Having spinoffs this early doesn't make sense."
Thats exactly my irk too. He's jumping too early and not giving his already in production ideas some space. Hes a small company, he cant fire off that kind of idea right away....wait it out and see what your profits are BEFORE you begin any big thoughts.

Plus, if he really does build a 1:1 replica of the Mega Man series structure, then he'd have a much harder time if the real Mega Man games ever had the chance to fall into his possession.

Thats a good point too...I guess he figures that "Well if things won't swing my way, then I'll just make it my way".
Also...was he seriously hinting that he'd want funding for the Legends-styled game too? I can understand funding for mighty No 9, but expecting to get money again that way seems a bit....not sure how to put it. But I guess what I mean is that if Mighty no 9 ends up being profitable enough along with gunvolt and anything else he may make around that time period....then shouldn't you rely on some of your profits rather than seeking the fans yet again? Its not like you wouldn't have the money, assuming the games mentioned sell decently.
I know most legends fans will donate towards that type of game in a heartbeat....but thats only because "kenji made it and its the closest new thing to legends". He'd get easy money off of that and he damn well knows it for sure.

Yeah...can we wait awhile until Mighty No. 9 is released to even think about spinoffs? I get that Inafune has ideas, but dude needs to pace himself. We don't even know what sales will be like for the upcoming game, so at this point a spinoff is more of a gamble than an informed decision.

I don't much like the idea of a Mighty No. 9 Legends. In fact a Not!Legends isn't really something I want him to make either. If he was going to do this I would want it to be a completely original story and setting. I'd rather it have the spirit of Legends than be a knock-off. Making it part of the MN9 canon would be a real stretch.

Here's the problem folks; Legends was already of unique design compared to its brethren. I'd reckon it's safe to assume that it could easily stand on its own two feet, and that the "Mega Man" moniker was nothing more than mere lip service in a marketing attempt to drum up a few extra sales. It wasn't all that successful, yeah, but if Inafune and company were 100% reliant on the name alone, then the setting of Legends wouldn't be so distant from the precursor series. Legends-izing MN9 completely defeats the purpose of what Legends was in the first place! Edit: All this being said, I'm throwing my hat in the "original game" circle.
