About Our purpose is to renew interest in the Megaman Legends series by playing them with a new goal: Head to head racing livestreamed for all to see! From simple races such as simply beating the game to hard mode, special goals and even 100%, anything is raceable. If you want to join or support us, there are two simple ways. You can come to one of the racers' stream pages during the race and watch, or you can watch all of the streams right here on MMLS! If you don't want to race, but you still want to participate, we'll be running a skype call during the race, and if someone wants to be a guest commentator, it could make for a more entertaining race. We just ask it's someone familiar with the Legends series or MMLS to join us. Don't hold back even if you don't think you're good enough, the more racers we get the more fun we can have, and Speedsrunlive will track your times as you get better and better. Finally, one of our major goals would be to break the MegaMan Legends SDA (Speeddemosarchive) record during a race, becoming one of the fastest ever playthroughs of the legends series. Right now the focus is on MegaMan Legends 1, but if this really takes off we're sure to take on the bigger challenge of Legends 2 or even Misadventures of Tron Bonne! A lot of time has come to pass since this was originally written. There are now speedrun routes for all three games in the series. If we get necessary interest in any game in the series, it wouldn't be all that difficult to setup a big race. Here are some acceptable setups for each game.. MegaMan Legends- Accepted Hardware - Playstation 1, Playstation 2.
- Preferred Emulator - Xebra
- Acceptable Emulators - ePSXe. Graphics issues. pSX - Very Rarely has audio problems.
MegaMan Legends 2- Accepted Hardware - Playstation 1, Playstation 2.
- Preferred Emulator - Xebra. Emulates all effects perfectly. May have sound skip in main menu on some slower PCs.
- Acceptable Emulator - ePSXe. Various graphical errors in many plugins, very high system requirements to get perfect graphics.
- Unusable Emulators - pSX - Runs the game perfectly... but freezes during the final cutscene. If you have a slower computer that doesn't like either of the above emulators, this can be used as a last resort, as it's quite lightweight.
Misadventures of Tron Bonne- Accepted Hardware - Playstation 1, Playstation 2.
- Preferred Emulator - Xebra - Runs perfectly on the latest version.
- Unusable Emulators - ePSXe, pSX. Both lock up on the game at various points. I've had some success preventing lockups disabling XA audio, but nothing is guaranteed.
Emulator notes.
Xebra is a relatively new emulator of Japanese origin. It lacks customization, but makes up for missing features with highly accurate emulation. It can be difficult to setup, but is leaps and bounds ahead of the other emulators in some games. It has no issues with the Legends series to my knowledge, but the accuracy comes with a price, it can require a midrange computer to power it. It refers to savestates as a different term, so it can actually be used for practicing difficult tricks.
ePSXe is a longstanding and popular Playstation 1 emulator. It has some difficulties with Legends 1 and Legends 2 framebuffer effects, but the games can be completed without issue. Do know that you will have some graphics errors even with the best of plugins, due to the nature of the games. MOTB can be setup with specific plugins and audio disabled so that it doesn't freeze, but it isn't recommended to try. The emulator is fully featured and very robust, making it good to use for practice and routing.
pSX is a very lightweight, speedy emulator that I've come to use for practice. It's much like Xebra in that it doesn't use a plugin system, but instead of focusing on accuracy, it focuses on useability. While it plays Legends 1 okay, aside from sometimes loading the wrong audio files, (which produce a five second lockup) it plays Legends 2 great. That is, until the end credits come and the game locks up before you see your final time. In a manually timed race, it shouldn't be a problem, but having a game lock up on stream is very undesirable.
In short, Xebra is the best emulator for streaming, but it can be a little trickier to use. pSX is very good to use for someone on a low end PC, and has easy to use savestates for practicing. ePSXe is very robust and customizable, letting you get very good quality at times but it won't emulate the games perfectly. Other emulators haven't been validated, so if you want an emulator validated for a game, please PM JMC47.

Racing Rules Rule #1: No cheating. That means no gameshark codes, no savestates, no speedups or anything else an emulator can do to improve your time. Console runs are okay, but due to the difficulty in setting up not recommended unless you know how to setup. Rule #2: You must stream you game. This is meant to be a social project, we want to have all the streams up for people to watch and chat with us as we go. If you play on console, then perhap we can work out some leniency, but even that you can use a webcam as a far cheaper solution to a capture card. Use Ustream, Twitch or Livestream so that it is supported by our embedding system. Rule #3: Concerning Saving and Loading. During a race, saving your game is completely allowed. Legends is a brutal game, but saves take time and are only for emergency scenarios. If you die toward the end with no saves, it's perfectly okay to quit out of the race with no repercussions outside of finishing in last with anyone else who quit. Rule #4: We use Speedrunslive to time/organize the start of our races. So it is imperative that you at least register there, but, you only need to register your stream with us, which is as simple as letting us know the channel name and site. Speedrunslive uses IRC, but there is an FAQ on their site to help you register there. It shouldn't be hard to join our race with a web client. Rule #5: Ingame timer is a secondary goal, we time by realtime. From the start of new game to your last input before credits (or the moment the goal is triggered, such as a boss kill) is when you can finish. Game Specifics We play in the U.S. Versions of the MegaMan Legends games. They are by far the most widely owned and easiest for a majority of the community to learn, given no language barrier and familiarity. If you stream emulator, we require you use the NTSC English MegaMan Legends 1. Japanese is unacceptable because it has faster dialogue and some scene differences that would result in more than a minute faster run. We're open to anyone joining our races and will help you through the steps to setup for racing. We prefer PSX emulator runs so long as frame limiters are on, and you use the latest (ePSXe 1.7.0 Xebra, pSX, etc) most accurate emulator of the branch. To stream emulator, you'll need a program (Xsplit, ManyCam are free options) to record of your desktop. Streaming from console is also possible using a capture card or webcam, and you won't need a recording program. After you have a working setup for capturing the video, you need an account on one of the supported streaming sites (Twitch.tv, justin.tv, ustream.tv or Livestream) to stream to. We'll gladly help anyone interested through the steps required to get it to recognize your stream, so feel free to ask. We currently are NOT accepting racers using MegaMan 64 or MegaMan Legends PC because of loading and lag differences. If someone absolutely can only stream those versions and wants to join, please PM me and we can work something out. Console Emulators (PS1 on Wii or Xbox) are not allowed, but we again can discuss the viability of PSP Popstation for the series. The PSP versions of the games are not allowed due to differences in item pricing. Race Types/Goals - Any% - Beat the game as fast as possible. Timing ends on last necessary input to get to credits.
- Low% - Beat the game with as few items as possible. In MML1, this is complicated, as they give you one special weapon. This run should really be buster only with only a range + 2 for the balcon gerald
- Any% Hard, easy, etc - Beat the game in the alternate difficulty mode as fast as possible. Timing ends on last necessary input to get to credits.
- Specific goals - Beat Marlwolf, collect 100,000 Zenny, or any other goal is completed as soon as you do the task involved while following any specified rules.
- 100% - Collect all items, Zenny treasures not withstanding, Make all special weapons, complete all sidequests, But DOES NOT include upgrading every special weapon to max.
Runners JMC47 - twitch.tv/JMC4789 - MML1 Any% 53:42 (record), MML2 Any% 1:42 :43 (record), MOTB Any% - 29:43(record) Trege - www.ustream.tv/channel/trege-s-channel - MML1 Any% 1: 15: 29 Jeffdamann - www.twitch.tv/jeffdamannEven if we're not doing a big race, you can often find us streaming practice, or even miniraces for us to solidify our routes before a big race. Don't expect big production values or commentary all of the time though!

General Tips For Good Times When trying to race, there are a few basic tips that could really affect your time. - Watch and learn. You can learn a tremendous amount by coming in and watching a race, seeing what the other people are doing.
- Skipping Cutscenes. While it doesn't affect the in game timer, in a race we time by realtime. So, skipping cutscenes and dialogue will greatly affect your time.
- Avoiding enemies. You don't have to kill everything in your path, simply avoiding enemies and running by them can save tons of time.
- Saving takes time. Yup, that percious little safety net for if all goes wrong is a serious time sink. But at the same time, if someone else dies and has no saves, then you would have a big advantage!
- Make use of emulators. While MegaMan Legends gives you a lot of opportunities to save, it's sometimes easier to be able to save literally anywhere. In middle of a fight, during a lengthy sequence, or right before an important trick. With an emulator, you can savestate anywhere, or even slow down the game so you can see more precisely what's going on! Make sure you don't do it during the actual race, though.
- Preparing for later. To most people, it may not seem faster to buy a buster upgrade early in the game. Not only does it cost a lot of time to enter the junkshop and talk to the owner, but you also spend zenny that could go elsewhere. But the time it saves throughout the run may be pivitol, or it could allow a new boss strategy or other general speedups.
- Random vs Reward. Zenny drops are random, so if your route is faster but relies on generous zenny drops, make sure you have a backup plan during a race... and of course...
- Practice makes perfect. Practicing and planning your route will make you more efficient and help you find your own tricks! This is the most essential tip to getting a great time versus just getting a good time.
Protips For Great Times These tricks were mostly researched and tested by JMC47 and Trege, and should give you some fun things to test, even if you aren't planning on speedrunning. Megaman Legends - Movement
- Running Cardinal Directions - slowest
- Jumping Cardinal Directions - third, very, very close to second
- Running Diagonal Directions - Second Fastest
- Jumping Diagonal Directions - Fast, better timed jumps = faster
- Jumping Diagonal Directions with SpringShoes - Even Faster because of less delays
- Jet Skates - Fastest, holding up goes even faster. Requires some time to get up to speed.
- Trigger Happy - Sometimes can get four shots off instead of three with minimum energy by turning just after the first shot
By tapping up right after a shot, you can force a second shot immediately, and a third, but is limited by energy after that point. Makes Rapid useless if done correctly.
- Won't Know What Hit 'Em - Most Enemies have a certain amount of damage that it takes to stun them, by increasing your attack enough, you can even stun lock some bosses, never allowing them to get an attack off.
- Kill Two Birds With One Stone - Damage can stack between enemies, one shot can hit multiple enemies if aimed properly. Can do double damage on Feldynaught if you hit two legs.
- Untouchable - Most Reaverbots don't hurt you by touching, some, such as the Jakko's nest, have no collision detection at all.
- Blumebear Quick Kill - They always throw the key to the blue one, if you kill it before it receives the key, it will simply drop on the ground for collection. Mines will do this near instantly.
- Feldynaught Quick Kill - As long as she doesn't drive, you can get in front of her bad leg (shows unarmored) and rapid fire mines down to about 1/3rd health. After that, drop one mine, and fire three buster shots (make sure you have power + 3) to stun it, rinse, repeat, dead. If she drives, when she gets to about 1/4th health, she'll drive back to the start location, so be prepared. Still can get a quick time despite her invincibility while driving.
- Bon Bonne Awesome Kill - While this is one of the harder kills to master, there are multiple ways to do it. If Townhall is destroyed, you can run backwards and jump off the ledge, but GRAB onto the ledge, Bon Bonne will try to clap you, and miss, then you climb up and turn around... and he's stuck past the ledge and cannot hit you. Mine spam him and he's dead in seconds. Is slower than the next trick because of time lost letting townhall die UNLESS two of the bonne mechs attack town hall.
- Bon Bonne Awesome Alternative Kill - If you're going really fast, townhall won't be destroyed, but we still want to kill Bon Bonne quickly. If you try the awesome kill, as soon as you drop down, he'll decide to go and attack townhall. So in this case we lure him past the FIRST road down on either side, go as fast as you can and put some distance. Stay near the edge, as the gap to the ramp increases and don't fall. Turn around, and he should be approaching you. He won't get stuck forever, but depending on how you time him clapping (watch out for missiles too as he closes in.) he can get stuck under the ledge for long enough to mine kill him.
- MarlWolf Quick Kill - Keep the mines, don't collect the machine buster. Instead, go up the ledge to the left of when you spawn for the fight, and jump up the two ledges and go right. Kill the tank as fast as you can, and then dodge the marlwolf's green orb with a side roll. He'll start coming back, and just before he stops, do a diagonal jump toward him. If you time it right, he'll stop, and you'll be able to jump onto his back side. The orb won't hit you. Too early, and he'll still be moving and, while it's possible, if you touch his front he'll knock you off. If you jump too late, he'll lock onto you and turn his backside away so you can't jump on. From there, stand as far back as you can while having your mind able to hit the door, if he sends out the minifliers, the explosions will hit you if you're too close. Be sure to start spamming mines before hte door opens, and if you do it right, you'll be able to kill the entire marlwolf before the hatch closes. You can use this time while he complains to collect more zenny!
- Roll's a crazy driver trick - If you stand in front of the cardon forest ruin gate, when she's going to ram it, if you jump at her and hit the spotting car when it hits max speed, you'll be knocked onto her roof and go over the barrier. When you get up, hold back and you can enter the ruin! Make sure you have some health if you do this... Actually, not sure if this saves time, but it's really fun to do.
- Cardon Forest Quick Route - By skipping the first two keys, you can go even faster than the normal route. You go up top, collect the last key, then jump down to the left, and down fall into the cut in pathways, land on top. It isn't too hard of a jump, but it can be tricky. Just follow the wall, and you should make it. Collect the second key, and head toward the conveyor room. From there, collect the conveyer key, and then you can easily make a run out. As a side note, Jakko's nests can be worth several thousand zenny, if you're behind on your zenny route. STand inside of them and fire mines.
- Uptown Taxi Service - When you get to uptown the first time heading to the boat shop, just pause and call roll! She'll pick you up, and if you just leave, you'll be right next to the boat shop.
- Balcon Gerald One Cycle without special weapons - This is the hardest trick in the game for a speedrun (so far!). I can't offer many tips on how to pull it off best other than practice. You need at least five attack and two range, and you really need to lead your shots. Make sure to get a few hits on the cannons before they start talking.
- Garudoriten Stun Lock - If you have a high powered weapon (Machine Buster works wonders) or a Buster of 5 or 6 attack, it's possible to stun lock the monstrosity. With Machine buster, manual aim works fine, but with the buster you should jump, and at the peak of your jump, let loose buster fire. With power + 5, you need 5 hits, with power + 6, 4 hits.
- Elevator Trick for Karumuna Bash - If you immediately jump on the elevator platform, they literally can't hit you. It's hilarious and sad.
- Bruno One Cycle - Other weapons may work, but only proven in the following scenario. Requires lock on off. Requires Active Buster with three upgrades, one attack, one energy and one rapid. When the fight starts, shoot with a max damage buster with at least two range and get three hits. Right when the third shot is fired, do a running jump forward and fire two more shots, slowly holding upper right to avoid running into him. Dodge the first green blast and hide behind the subgate door for the second. Then he will turn and walk away, and just start pumping active buster shots out regardless of whether he's firing at you. When the explosion of one of his missiles hits you, run forward as close as you can and aim quickly, but accurately and fire more active buster shots. If you did everything exactly perfect, he'll die before he fires his second set of shots. Very difficult, right on the level of the Balcon Gerald with this equipment. Saves less time too, but, still is a fun trick.
- Gai-nee Tooren 10 cycle - Now here's a trick that was discovered very late into practice. Basically, with a max damage buster or powered up special weapon, you can break the scripted sequence on the extra compartments. I'll explain how to do it with the buster, since that's confirmed to work. First, shoot twice quickly, then wait until you're sure he's going to drop a reaverbot, and then fire two more shots with the stutter shot. Do note this does not work the first time it opens a particular hatch, only the second and third. It consistently works, and saves about 10 - 15 seconds depending on how fast you can dispatch the reaverbots!
- Second Form Juno Special Weapon Damage - Special Weapons do more damage to Juno's head, while buster shots do okay damage anywhere on Juno. Most special weapons, even powerful ones like active buster, do next to no damage when hitting the legs or spine. But headshots? Do far more damage than the buster.
Megaman Legends 2 - Fire Escape - If you aren't planning on going to the fridge, it's faster to simply get to red life (one hit from death) during the Flutter fire. That cancels the scenario and lets you move forward faster!
- Stutter Shot 2.0 - Like Legends 1, you can tap forward to shoot more shots in less time. Unlike Legends 1, this is not limited based on time, only by the shots on screen, thus, it's hugely better than in Legends 1. This one is as simple as holding the fire button and tapping up on the dpad or joystick. It also works on special weapons that allow you to move... awesome.
- Critical Hits - Lots of bosses have weaknesses, some obvious, some not so obvious. Try experimenting with different weapons and manually aiming and you may find that some spots do double or triple damage! Example is Spikey's butt (first boss) Rush Mammoo's Trunk and Tron's Crabbot's hatch (MML1 reference?)
- Critical Attack Skips - This applies to any boss with an invincibility attack triggered by health. Tron's Crabbot is most offensive, but Bola and the Rush Mammoo (though for it particularly, there's nothing you can do.) also have them. For Tron, it happens at about 20% health, but, her attacks aren't interruptable. Using an early special weapon and the stutter shot trick (I like using homing missiles for this) you can kill her during another attack so that she doesn't use the attack that destroys the town!
- Knockdown Invincibility - This can be useful for someone trying to take less damage. Jump just before a minor attack hits you and you'll get the invincibility of knockdown so you can keep attacking when you get up, instead of potentially getting juggled by hits. Most useful on machine gun attacks, especially the crabbot.
- Nino Stuff - I'm just going to be general here, nothing you can do will speed up phases 1 and 2 of Nino. They trigger when they're ready, but, for the first phase after Roll calls out to you, you can go hang on the lever so that you don't waste any extra time after it triggers the end of the scene. On the third one, as long as you're standing on the ship, it can't crash, letting you get up close and personal with the dropship attacking. One the roof, the phase before the boss fight is timed, you can't speed it up.
- Grounded Planes - On Glyde's base, a simple way to make your life easier is to shoot down the grounded planes before they take off. You can sometimes get five or even six if you're very lucky, but even if you totally mess up four won't take off until you destroy one of the airborne ones.
- Stacker Master - In the fourth zone, where you have to stack crates? Just stick it on the broken wall and jump from there. Can save oodles of time! Yes. I did use the word oodles. Sue me.
- Pacifist Escape - This takes both luck and skill, but you can simply grab Shu and run out, without even firing a shot. If you get hit, it can become a lot harder, but using the walls to guard you from tank fire, it's actually quite doable!
- Jellyfishfodder - Though slower, by draining the water out of the Jellyfish boss battle, you can make it so much easier. Fighting them underwater can be risky even for high level players.
More to come soon!

FAQ (or, 'Thinks we think you might be curious about') Q: What if I find someone who is willing to race me now?A: Then race them! Speedrunslive will let you race someone in any game as long as you have two people. We're only trying to organize things to make big races to join and watch. Be sure to observe SRL rules while racing! If you don't want to use SRL, you can just come up with your own rules too, but it is good knowing how to use SRL For our big races.Q: I died! And I didn't save...A: Not a question, but, I wrote it for a reason. IF you die and have to restart, SRL will let you forfeit the race instead of restarting. There's no penalty outside of losing the race, and it can be a more appealing option than starting over late in a run.Q: I need a little extra zenny, can I use cheats? Savestates during a race?A: No. Cheats are expressly forbidden on SRL, as are emulator features that would make the run easier. Running the game at a higher resolution is okay, but savestating and reloading is forbidden. Using a gameshark or cheatengine is expressly forbidden. Glitches and tricks, as long as they work on console, are allowed.Q: Why are you using Speedrunslive to organize this?A: There are a lot of features on the site that make it nicer for us. By registering our streams there, we pop up on their mainsite and will get more people to watch, and maybe even join in racing. Plus it allows us to track wins, times, and even see who the fastest player is per game!Q: Can we race to anything other than the game being completed? What if I'm not sure what the goal means?A: You can race to anything you can get people to agree to. We've already done practice races to beating the Marlwolf. Make sure if you don't know what a goal is that you ask other people in the race channel before you ready up.Q: How do I register on SRL?A: You can follow their FAQ here (speedrunslive.com/faq) on how to register. If you need help registering you stream, please let us know!Q: I saw someone cheat during a race!A: Report it to the other racers or SRL officials immediately for it to be dealt with. If it's an accident or minor, it'll probably only result in a Disqualification from the race, but if it's blatant, they could be banned from racing.Q: That last one wasn't a question either.A: Neither was that, a sign I'm out of ideas.

Can we use those super-ultra glitches that allow us to skip great part of the game?
Also, since when is Legends a brutal game? It's not even mildly challenging. Also, using the Shining Laser makes it a walk in the park, or so I've heard. (Thus the reason I never even touched it, just collected it.)

=( I was expecting the MML2 mini-game =(
Seriously.
But no, this is really cool. I wish I could join in. Have fun, guys. I always focus on making my battles look cool and beating bosses using the most complex maneuvers possible, so I wouldn't stand a chance.
I'd say MML is at least mildly challenging. Especially if you don't know the rapid-fire technique.

Legends is particularly brutal when speedrunning because you don't get weapons such as the shining laser or armor upgrades, at least if you're trying to set the best time possible. You really set your own difficulty depending on how fast you really want to go. To get everything right, knowing that in the late game one or two mistakes mean death, while racing against other people? It can be quite stressful, really. Most games, saving is either quick, or even necessary for warping, but in Legends 1 and 2, one single death pretty much ends your chances. Saving takes upwards of 30 seconds to do, so I tend to avoid it. With Juno book ending the run, when we have no health tanks, no armor upgrades and only a mildly upgraded special weapon... well... it'll be interesting, to say the least. And, even if you aren't trying to set any records, it'd be fine to join and show the community your skills. Oh yeah, I totally forgot the point of my brutal comment; there are no continues. In Zelda, die, you can start at the beginning of a dungeon. In MML? If you don't insurance save, you start over from the very beginning. That's why Legends is a brutal game for racing.

I'll see if I can emulate and join you guys! Just make sure you can emulate the game at a constant 60FPS while at the same time streaming the emulation. I recommend you to set the Max FPS limit to 60 so it won't go slightly overboard. (It happens, but it is almost unnoticeable most of the times.)

All the emulators suggested have built in frame limiters that must be turned on during the race.
Also, dual core computers seem to handle pSX fine, but I've experienced some trouble with ePSXe with any of the good plugins.

I updated the trick database with specific tricks, hopefully helping out anyone who wants to join. We now have embedded video streams right here on MMLS for anyone who wants to watch! I'll probably do a practice run tonight, last night I was up on the SDA record run and died on Juno. So, things are getting serious on the showdown!
