I think it would feel weird to call someone sonata. Auria feels alright though. But if you were Sonata I suppose your nickname could be Sunny.

When I hear Sonata, I don't think of the musical term. I think of the mid-size sedan made by Hyundai. Just take into consideration that others might think this too.

That doesn't matter, car's names are always weirdest, you may think that "Moco" "Borrego" and "Laputa" are good names for cars, but if you check their meaning in spanish, well... (Third name could be considered as 2 words being "La" and... the other one) So what if your name reminds me of a car? It could be kind of cool too.

Sonata always reminds me of music, Eternal Sonata, FFVII, RPGs, violins, my friend who's an awesome musician in the national orchestra, ocarinas, Pokemon, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (And its 3D version) and The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask.
The chain of memories could go on and on. That just reminded me of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for the GBA, then this reminded me of Re: Kingdom Hearts Chains of Memories for the PS2, then of KH2, etc. (If I continue, I will never finish this post.)

I know a friend who's named that, and her nickname's Mercy.

Actually Mercedes is a name, (common in spanish) the cars are named after the wife or daughter of the company creator. So if anyone says: "Hey! you have the name of a car!" you can say: "The car have my name"

The only Mercedes I know of that pops to mind is the Mercedes from Glee who got mad about not getting any tater tots because Sue wanted her to go on a diet.
