So Megaman is ancient being, A first class purifier, was the Masters best friend of sorts, but he still thinks most books are too hard for him to read. 90% of the time when he looks at books in MML1 & 2 he's says 'these books are too hard to read', 'these books are too complex', "Maybe Roll could make some sense of this'. Take the Holon book in MML1 for example, it's pretty black and white, makes perfect sense and Rock has no idea what it means. I mean the guy can read an ancient language!
Either he's been relying on Roll to do all the thinking, or reading too many 'comic books'.

In my personal opinion, Capcom was just getting lazy with thinking of things to put in every single bookshelf. Ever played Pokemon? Buuut phun theories could work here as well, I suppose. Too many comic books, amnesia, never went to high school, anything's possible for good old Rock.

You would think 'Professor' Barrel would have taught the boy some reading comprehension.

I say Rock is more of a digger than a reader and not to keen on machines and how they function.
You think he would be able to understand some of the books more easily.

That just gave me an idea...
but yeah, one would think Trigger would be able to have a basic grasp on reading- but I do he think should practice with something outside of Roll's diary. ;D

"Prerogative...of correctional?"
I guess Terra doesn't have much in the way of compulsory public schooling, at least not from what we've seen. So far it's really just been the YAG building (probably a private institution) and the Mayor's quiz students (definitely a private institution). If so many kids like Mega Man and Roll are traveling around the world, it makes sense to either home-tutor them, or just teach them how to be diggers and spotters, since that's where the money is. Literally.

The point is that Barrel should have been teaching the boy more then how to diggout ruins and shoot reavers.

If Barrel doesn´t taught Megaman to read then he learned by himself, otherwise how could he understand Roll´s emotions and thoughts? by reading her diary of course.
As for the: "these books are too hard to read" put it this way: you are walking way home when you found on a trashcan a book about physic theory, you could read it, but maybe you will not understand a single phrase, what do you do? leave it there or give it to someone who understand it. Megaman is lucky of having a mechanic genius in home, that´s why he just gave them to Roll without even reading.
About ancient reading, i think he does the same as me, most of the time when I read your posts I don´t have to translate to spanish every single word in my head, I just understand it. Sometimes when I watch on Youtube an anime episode I don´t realize the subtitles where in english until the chapter was finished, and I understand it as if I had reading in Spanish.
I guess every control panel for an elevator or data downloading is written on Elysian, so Megaman can understand the symbols he found inside the ruins and he just translate them to his language, about the machinery books, he simply don´t want to waste time reading something that he may never use.

Even if not directly implied, I do believe that Digouters need (at worst) a certain level of mechanical skill as part of their qualifications.
As for his ability to 'read', I agree with Rockman Striker; the context of 'read' is clearly 'read and understand'.

The first impression that I got was the fact that while MegaMan can read the books, there are times when he doesn't understand the jargon the book had used and would rather ask Roll to assist in helping him understand what they mean.
I am also in agreement with Rockman Striker about reading and understanding.
