Name: Karubun HP: 2560 Location: Sub-Cities/Main Gate | |
Overview
This installment of "Rate that Reaver' features Karubun, a reaverbot that...ah, I've got nothing.
Karubun's certainly a hefty fellow, and he's pretty much the reaverbot equivalent of a tank. These big guys aren't seen until late in MML1, appearing in a couple of the Sub-Cities as well as the Main Gate. These reavers usually appear with other reavers, be it their own species or with others. They honestly aren't too fearsome-looking, but given their appearance you know that it'll take more than a few hits to put one of these bad boys down.
Given the fact that these things are tanks, they're characteristically slow and powerful. Karubun is equipped with machine guns on its underside for long-range fighting, and bombs that come out of its mouth when an enemy gets a little closer. Movement wise, they do walk around a bit when not occupied, but when engaged with an enemy they stand still as they attack. These reaverbots drop a decent amount of zenny as well.
Dealing With It
The best thing you can do to take one of these things out is to stay at a distance and keep shooting. These guys are pretty healthy, so it's a bit of a chore to get rid of them. The machine gun shots can do some damage, so staying at a distance gives you more time to react and also keeps the bombs at bay. Should a shot clip you, hit the jump button quickly to roll out of the way; the last thing you want is to take multiple shots while your Life Shield is temporarily down. Keep firing and Karubun should fall in short order.
Coming In For A Landing
When thinking of reaverbots from MML1, Karubun's not exactly the first to come to mind. He's a bit overlooked due to his late appearance, but he's still a good design and pretty formidable as well. Is it wrong if I admit that the purple ones remind me of Barney the Dinosaur? XD Regardless, Karubun gets an 8/10!

Yeah, you don't think of Karubuns all that much. I spent a bit of the weekend on a playthrough of MM1, and these guys aren't too bad by themsleves- You're usually worried by the 6 Sharukurus chasing you down like Inspector Zenigata (Lupin III).:11:
Pity we don't see the Karubuns after that- these guys have potential, with a few modifications..

Hm, an interesting reaverbot. I've always remembered it for its distinctive appearance, and, as Buster and Raven mentioned, the fact that it never appears without another 'supplemental' reaverbot to back it up. It's quite easy to beat, though- for all its guns and bomb patterns, the 'circle' technique with any good buster configuration will have this down in seconds. All in all, an 8/10 sounds like a fair score.

I find this leebird to be one of my favorites due to its 'tank' like tendencies. Sure he may be slow but he has the weapons and armor to get your attention. Though being pumped full of plasma is not a fun thing to experience on a rooftop.

It just needed treadmills to be a tank XD
You know.. sometimes I got to think of something... the Feldynaught has similar attacks with this reaver. I wonder if that's just coic.... nah. it's really coicidence.
Also I must say that being coupled with shakurusus in the Sub-Cities was a genious plan.

Ah yes, the Karubun ('frog hippos' I call them) and Sharukurussu of the Downtown Sub-City. I remember them when I rented MM64 as a little kid, when I went into someone's save file and decided to investigate 'that strange black box in the Downtown area'.
And I remember being terrified, being chased down by the Sharukurussu and being shot at by those Karubun. And no matter where I hid they always found me, and would destroy the buildings that I tried to stood on and shoot back. Yeah, bad memories. Today they don't really scare me anymore, unless I'm cornered, but I'll never forget how much they scared me back then... Also I remember the Sub-City looking more like an endless desert, guess it wasn't...
Memories aside, I would probably rate them 6/10. I mean, they kinda do their job well, and are actually quite annoying especially when they decide to circle around you, they're not THAT slow, making it harder to shoot back.
I do like that they open their mouths a bit before they die though, it's kinda cute in a weird way.

If these Reaverbots had the feature of the Zakobon's to where they lowered their bodies and were able to power slide very fast and a good distance. I would have to give these Reaverbots a 10/10. But I put them at 8/10 because of their very slow motions which made them not dangerous at all.
