Name: Guruguru/Kuruguru HP: 512 (MML1) HP: 32 (B), 60 (A), 130 (S) Location: Everywhere but Calinca & Forbidden Island | |
Overview
Welcome to the newest installment of "Rate that Reaver"! In this segment, we'll be taking a look at one of the most annoying (and recurring) reavers in the series, Guruguru!
Guruguru (known as Kuruguru in the sequel) is one of the more easily recognized reaverbots in the series. It's rather short, has a mostly flat body, and is rather unattractive. They seem to have an insect-like design, given it's shape and the little legs protruding out of it. They're a pretty universal reaver as well, appearing on pretty much every island in the series (not counting MoTB) barring Calinca & Forbidden Island.
Behavior-wise, it generally walks (crawls?) at a slow pace until it spots an intruder, in which case it proceeds to bodily ram it's newly found target with extreme prejudice. They can be extremely aggressive, ramming themselves into you (or possibly a wall) repeatedly until it's destroyed or otherwise detained. Guruguru is also immune to damage when standing normally, but it can be flipped over on it's backside, making it vulnerable to attacks. It can re-calibrate itself after it takes enough punishment, though.
Dealing With It
Guruguru is quite the nuisance, but thankfully, it's not too hard to take out. The easiest method of flipping them over is giving them a simple kick, or a toss with the Lifter if you're dealing with Kuruguru. A few other weapons can flip it as well; the Shield Arm (MML1), Blade Arm (MML2), and Drill Arm (MML2) are all capable of doing this, and a rapid flurry of buster shots will do the same. From there you can proceed to attack it, but it will flip back onto it's proper side after it takes enough damage, so you'll have to repeat yourself.
I should also note that these guys are 50% more annoying underwater. Given the slowness of your movement (not so much on the PSP version), it becomes that much more easier for you to get hit. You can use the Lifter to catch one if it's coming your way and hopefully toss it at something else, but you really should exercise caution as you do not want these guys bulldogging you in those conditions!
Coming In For A Landing
Guruguru is certainly one of the more common reaverbots, and is also one of the more annoying ones, particularly in MML2. They do set the whole "dark & mysterious" atmosphere pretty well, though, and they also got to star in the S-License exam. I can't say I'm too fond of their design, though, as I find them rather creepy. Guruguru gets a 5/10 from me.
Post your opinions/thoughts/ratings here!

While I like their design and their whole brutish style (like the way they shake the screen when ramming walls in MML2), from a gameplay standpoint I'm never happy to see them. Even using the tricks to get them on their back faster, it still takes way too long to kill them since they're sure to flip back upright before you can finish them off anyway. Higher difficulty levels with these guys make me prefer to avoid them rather than waste time with all that shooting. They're not difficult, just tedious.
"Kuruguru" isn't really a name change by the way. That's technically their name in MML1 too, but the reference book that gives most of the official english MML1 enemy names is riddled with typos.

Buster, I often wonder how you can bash the snot out of a Reaverbot in your review and then give it a 7 out of 10. Are you grading these Reavers on an American High School grading scale or something? I'm giving them a flat 1. Ugly, tiring to deal with, and even the novelty of being able to throw them at each other in Legends 2 doesn't fix it. The gold ones I'll give an extra two points, purely on aesthetics. At least they're nicer to look at than their rusty brown counterparts. Now you've actually got me wondering why the design team kept bringing these guys back at all, if they're such a hassle to deal with!

They're not particularly fun to deal with (I usually just rush through the room or jump over 'em), but they do add to the atmosphere of the ruins, so...how about 5/10?

*fixes*
I do find it funny that you like the gold ones better, though, as I actually find them to be far uglier than the regular ones. Something that ugly-looking shouldn't be painted that color, as it really doesn't help much in terms of appearance.
While they're easier to deal with in MML2, I still don't see what would possess them to bring them back, especially underwater. Poor Sharukurusu got far less screen-time in MML2 than in the prequel, and I'd assume that he's a lot more popular than these guys.

Higher difficulty levels with these guys make me prefer to avoid them rather than waste time with all that shooting. They're not difficult, just tedious. I've never really had the problem of them flipping over on their own since I tend to stick to the lifter only on these guys. Even so, killing them seems to be more trouble than it's worth, and I more than often bypass them altogether. I will note that the reaver you throw it at yields different results. Toss one of these bad boys at Miitan and watch the sparks fly!

These reaverbots give me the creeps as they remind me of overgrown reaverbot versions of tarantulas. I also find it annoying when they seem to come at me in packs O.o;.
As soon as I flipped them over, I dash out of there before they recover. Why should I waste ammo on them?
A 3/10

Guys, these are reaverbots we're talking about.
9/10 BECAUSE they're ugly and a hassle.

I dunno, seems more like a boring design combined with tedious ammo-and-time wasting. Maybe these guys do their job a little too well ... *shrug*

Guys, these are reaverbots we're talking about. 9/10 BECAUSE they're ugly and a hassle. That's kinda what I was thinking, at least on the "ugly" part. I mean, everyone thinks they're ugly? They look exactly like a Reaverbot is supposed to look like, don't they? What would be an attractive Reaverbot? Not a messy, angular assemblage of dull metal plates?

Did somebody say attractive reaverbot? Actually, I think it's a very cool design. There aren't many reaverbots with moving parts, so to speak, and the fact that Guruguru's mouths all move separately shows real attention to detail. It's just that they also happen to give me the willies.

Whenever I deal with these, they always sneak attack me.
After I deal with one of them and go some place else, another comes out of a corner *cue Jaws theme* and then rams into my back. Making me not play the game for about 2 weeks since I was to freaked out.
3/10 for giving me nightmares when I was 8.

I'm going to deviate from the majority here and say I LIKE these guys. Dull, gritty and ugly is what a reaverbot should be, and they have it in spades. I find fighting them to be easy, just boost your megabuster's range and energy, shoot from far away, and the shots will keep flipping it over before it gets anywhere near you.
It's more tedious then anything. Drop their health, make it harder to flip them, make it so they aren't so slow on the approach, and don't stuff more then three of them in any area, and you'd have a fun encounter.

I get a little annoyed with the weeaboo kids who think everything ought to be idealized or fashionable in some way, even when it's totally inappropriate. Some things are just meant to be ugly and repulsive, these guys included.
