The 20GB and 60GB original 599 US Dollars PS3's can play PS2 Games perfectly and natively. Other early PS3's could play most PS2 game via emulation. After that, every new PS3 couldn't read PS2 Games. Luckily, I have the 60GB Original (And I changed its HHD for a 500GB one.) However, PS2 games were region locked in both native-reading and emulating-capable PS3's.
However, (most importantly) every PS3 can read PS1 games regardless of how new or old it is.

I'm also one of the fortunate ones to own a PS3 with the PS2 hardware included...however sadly I recently came face to face with the YLOD, so I'm currently in the process of putting in some repair. Hopefully I won't have to resort to getting a new system altogether, bleh. I originally owned a 3rd generation console, but after having that stolen (long story for another day), I came across a friend who didn't use his system (1st gen, 60GB) as much, so he just let me have it including two guitars, all the guitar heroes, a bunch of other games and some Blu-Ray movies, and two controllers with a charging dock, all for just $300! So I couldn't really turn an offer like that down...but I guess age and constant use can sneak on ya, huh?

I know, I know. No worries, I already have all of the necessary supplies to fix it, minus a single Torx bit needed to undo the first screw. The solution seems to be using a controlled source of heat such as a heat gun to heat either the Cell CPU or the RSX GPU until they slip back into their sockets, from which they've been slid out of place originally, most likely due to overheating of the system such as in my case.
Also, doesn't Sony tell you to leave the HDD behind when sending it in for repairs anyway? I could be wrong, but I could've sworn they said that to a friend of mine when he had to send his system in for lens replacement.

I'm on the subject. After collecting every single piece of information I could, I think I have the exact solution for playing the game on PC! I still have to test it on other PCs and notebooks, but I think I've got the mystery solved. Or at least I hope. Please tell us if this worked.

Somebody plz help me play this game. I run Epsxe 1.7, Pete's OpenGL2 2.9 and Eternal 1.41, but I have a big issue. A lot of the dialogue in the first game level will never appear and I have to press start to bypass it, but also the when I try to bring up the menu screen, I get nothing but a black screen. Using the Epsxe sound core solves the problem but that SPU plugin is shit, so I'm not going to use it. I want to use Eternal sound plugin with this game, please tell me one of you guys get it to work with Eternal.

I did rip from my own disk using clonecd and in the .img file format. I have since now tried PEOPS Dsound repair and it fixes the glitches, but it still has some performance issues with the audio.
*Sigh*. It is just my luck that this doesn't work. Would you mind telling me how you got Eternal to work? I swear on my life I got Eternal to work fine before with this game. But why did they apparently have to program the sound in such a convuluted way? No other game I have tried has these issues.

So you are playing your game from the disc. I ripped mine to an .img file and I even tried putting the .sub and .ccd files together with it and renamed all three to the same name. Still nothing. I highly doubt playing the game via a disc is going to make any difference, but I'll try it out and see what happens.
EDIT: I DLed that CD plugin, but it won't work, it doesn't even try to read the CD. The core one works, but still when reading from there, I still have the non-appearing dialogue issue. Did you have to do anything special to get that sapu cd plugin to work?

Long post ahead.
Since I had my ext-HD within easy reach, I decided to do my own tests (if MoTB seriously didn't have a low Replay Value, I would've done this sooner. All of these were tested by playing the intro stage and triggering speech. I just did the normal way of selecting the .img file, using the file menu.
Set A Video: Pete's OpenGL2 2.9 Driver plugin (with shaders) Audio: SPU eternal 1.41 CD: epsxe CDR core 1.7.0 Result: Sound is running at default speed. No skipping needed on speeches. No visual glitches. Pause behaves normally.
Set B Video: Pete's DX6 D3D plugin Audio: Same as Set A CD: Same as set A Result: Sound is running at default speed. No skipping needed on speeches. No visual glitches. Pause behaves normally.
set C: Video: PEOPS Soft 1.18 plugin Audio: Same as Set A CD: Same as Set A Results: Sound skips and loops from time to time. No graphical glitches. Pause behaves normally.
Set D Video: Same as Set C Audio: EPSXE SPU Core 1.7.0 CD: Same as Set A Results: Everything seems to be a tad slower. No skipping needed on speeches. Black screen on pause. No graphical glitches.
Set E Video: Same as Set C Audio: Andy's SPU Audio Driver 0.16 CD: Same as Set A Results: No graphical glitches. Skipping needed on speeches. black screen on pause.
Set F: Video: Same as Set C Audio: PEOPs DSound Audio Driver 1.9 CD: Same as Set A Results: No graphical glitches. Skipping needed on speeches. black screen on pause.
Set G Video: Same as Set C Audio: Same as Set A CD: Sapu's CD-Rom plugin Results: Sound skips and loops from time to time. No skipping needed on speeches. No visual glitches. Pause behaves normally.
Set H: Video: Same as Set C Audio: Same as Set A CD: Mooby cd disk image driver 1.16 Results: Sound skips and loops from time to time. No skipping needed on speeches. No visual glitches. Pause behaves normally.
I didn't experiment further with video plugins because I need to know your video card. It wouldn't make sense using the OpenGL and the DX6 driver if your video is the bare "for Windows XP" minimum (It's doable). I'll say more after someone posts.

It's kinda puzzling that I didn't run into graphical glitches. I swear I had it happen to me when I was just starting to play it (sandy brown colored streaks appeared and everything just seemed so slow).
possible bug: In the digout level, when you're being asked by the twins, there were times when the game would simply hang in the middle of loading the next question. I used savestates by saving before answering and loading when it stalls. I wasn't able to test that part on any of these steps.

What!?!?! You got the game to work with the plugins on set A!?!?! PLEASE POST SCREENSHOTS OF YOUR CONFIG!!!!!
Trust me when I say, I have literally tried every.single.possible.combination of options in eternal 1.41 and pete's opengl2 2.9. I also tried putting the .ccd and .sub files in the same folder and made sure they were named the same and my file is a .img file, ripped from my own disc using clonecd. Every single time, no matter what I did, the dialogue refuses to continue, or flat out doesn't appear at certain parts of the intro stage.
I have literally put a whole day's worth of effort into getting this game to work with those plugins in part a, and to no avail. Yeah, my computer is a piece of ****. But it should not have any problems running a video game on hardware that is almost 20 ****ing years old.

Tried that and it still refuses to work...
I don't know what to do at this point. Everybody else seems to have this game working perfectly fine and I'm the only one with an issue.

If the dialogue happens to freeze, just make a savestate at the area it's frozen at, and then reload the state. (default buttons F1 then F3). That should cause the dialogue to continue. If the dialogue happens to not appear... You need to start over and hope that it does. And, make sure you don't skip any of it either. That's my experience with emulating MoTB. Once the intro stage is out of the way, it's basically smooth sailing, minus a couple dialogue freezes here and there. (which you press F1 and F3 to remedy.)
