Well this is a welcome surprise. Nintendo has announced the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition for release in the US and EU (The EU version will be called Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System). It will retail for $60 in the US, and comes with a power block and USB cable, an HDMI cable, and a NES Controller, and comes pre-loaded with thirty games, including all three Super Mario Bros. games, Final Fantasy, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Expand Dong, Pac-Man, Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, and many others. The console will be compatible with Wii Classic Controllers and Classic Controller Pros via the standardized ports on front of the console. The EU version, however, comes with a USB cable but no USB power block, meaning you'll have to use one from a mobile phone, but everybody has at least one or two of those lying around, and surge protectors with USB charging ports aren't too expensive these days anyway. You can also buy NES Controllers separately for $10 to use with the NES Classic Edition. Source: NintendoLifeThe system will release November 11. What are your thoughts?

I would definitely buy one when I have the chance, it was my first console and I wanted to buy one a long time ago. It seems it doesn't work with cartridges and there is no way to load more games on it but I already have my android mini PC plugged into my TV full of retro games so I'll use it just for display.

I think it's a little disappointing that I can't stick any of my NES cartridges in it so it can have some other form of usefulness, but otherwise, it seems alright.

I've seen many controllers that do exactly the same. Chance is that those might be filled with bootleg games since those are original. This one at least has some worth! though it still needs the console itself.

The nostalgia...it's...it's nonexistent! DOS kid all the way. $2 a game's not bad though, especially if one of them's called Expand Dong. I'm sure a lot of people have high, high hopes for that one.

THat's not a bad selection they have with it. Since I have most of teh games already via virtual console, I'm more interested in getting the controller. The gamepad is decent, but a little slow in reaction and its size can make precision playing a bit of work.

Expand Dong is a joke. It's actually Donkey Kong. I call it that because of a very stupid very glorious meme I am trying to run into the ground.

Aw man, and here you had me thinking Nintendo actually marketed M-rated games for people who aren't into women.

Well, it is Donkey Kong. It doesn't get much more mature than that!
Anyhoo, sounds like a good deal for people that haven't purchased these games off of one of the many online shops Nintendo has already. The odd ones to me being on there are Kid Icarus since it's not all that good, Castlevania II instead of III, and Super C instead of the original Contra. Poor Mega Man 3 and 4 don't get the love they should, yo.

Since I have most of teh games already via virtual console, I'm more interested in getting the controller. sounds like a good deal for people that haven't purchased these games off of one of the many online shops Nintendo has already. Definitely seems like a missed opportunity to add some functionality to the device to allow it to connect to a Nintendo account and purchase/download NES games you've already bought on the Wii/WiiU/3DS Virtual Console (or more likely, grant you the opportunity to buy all your NES games again for the 6th time). Maybe it's a mixed blessing, though - this is tantamount to new, physical copies of all of these games with "licenses" that can't be revoked because of the whims of a company or service disruption. I wonder if we'll see Nintendo release more of these - more mini-consoles with a few dozen preloaded games to take advantage of that $20 grandma-buying-kid-plug-and-play-vidjas demographic that's sorely needing some baseline for quality and value. In the last 10 years, we've seen such collections come with games from Sega, Atari, the Intellivision, and Coleco. None of them were game changers in their own right ba-dum-tsh, but I feel like they've forced a rise in the bare minimum of what passes as good value for such devices, since there's something instantly recognizable, readily available, and at an accessible price point.
I also wonder what sort of emulation they're doing. Mapper | Games | (No mapper) | Balloon Fight Donkey Kong Donkey Kong Jr. Excitebike Galaga Ice Climber Mario Bros. Pac-Man Super Mario Bros. | MMC1 | Bubble Bobble Castlevania II Dr. Mario Final Fantasy Kid Icarus Legend of Zelda Mega Man 2 Metroid Ninja Gaiden Tecmo Bowl Zelda II | UNROM | Castlevania Ghosts 'n Goblins | CNROM | Gradius | MMC3 | Double Dragon 2 Kirby's Adventure Super C Super Mario Bros. 2 Super Mario Bros. 3 | MMC6 (MMC3) | StarTropics | MMC2 | Punch-Out! |
In theory, if they're doing general emulation, you might be able to hack the thing to replace the games on the device with most other games that use the same mappers. They're covering the most popular ones (MMC1, MMC3), so that's the majority of the games people would want to play. It's only a bunch of Namco games, Sunsoft games, and all those wonderful bootleg games that will likely be impossible.

I'm unsure if I want to invest in this one. I might give it a look if they re-release Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, honestly....but that more than likely won't be the case. At least I can emulate these all anyways.

At least I can emulate these all anyways. I don't think that's possible: After Tyson started stirring up trouble, Nintendo released the alternate version with Mr. Dream in Tyson's place. That being said, I doubt Tyson's brief stint of ears in his diet helped things.
