And I'm sure you know that I'm referring to the first game, and part to the spin-off.
Recently, I fell in love with these Metroidvania-styled games. They open up more exploration than any other game, even though they tend to make item-finding a tedious task (looking at you Metroid). Regardless, they are still a great way to find innovative maps and environments that force you to think in how to get past certain obstacles.
These games take it a step further by somewhat blocking access by putting hazards or objects which require a tool or ability to get past, like the nefarious double jump for high ledges or... ugh... "push a box" (Looking at you Portrait of Ruin).
But most of these games are 2D platformers and I always wondered what they would look like in 3D. Interestingly enough, Both Metroid and Castlevania franchises have stepped into 3D but didn't find any new and innovative ways of forcing you to learn something before bypassing an obstacle. (And Metroid seems to work better as a FPS while Castlevania as an hack-and-slash)
Since the very fist Legends game has interconnected ruins, I pondered about these questions. Sadly, only the high-jump springs and the Drill Arm are relevant. Which seems rather insufficient.
Not to mention that you have access to the gates from the outside, rather than going trough the process of finding a way to them. And still, even though it is a linear path, it's still a tricky one that involves more a more direct approach and thinking outside of the box. In this case, (in order): Saving the town from the Bonnes which grants you the Digger's license, using said license to go trough the only reachable gate, use the refractor found there to repair a boat for the next gate, use the refractor there to repair the Flutter to access the final gate and open the subcities, get the keys from the subcities to open the door inside the Main gate.
It is very linear indeed but you are not told any of these things unless you find them out yourself.
Now, I have to wonder if there could be any Legends-y tricks to block your way inside the maze of ruins and force you to go back after you acquired a skill to go on trough.
For example, imagine a collapsing bridge which falls underneath Megaman as he runs by (like the ice platforms but faster), if Megaman can't get to the other side in time for the bridge to fall on his feet, maybe it could be a good use of the Jetskates to get across.
Another example would be using the kick attack, yes it is available at the start but imagine if there was a fence which blocks your shots but you can see a switch on the other side. Perhaps you could come back with a grenade-type weapon that doesn't explode on impact to shoot it above the fence, or even let a trapped Horroko free and lure it to the fence so it would shoot its bomb and you could kick it back trough the fence without the need of building your own weapon.
These are just a couple examples, what else can you think of?
