Note:I've made this review purposely vague at points in order to avoid spoiling the story for anybody who wants to read it.
So, I've been reading (actually listening) to this story for about a month now and I just finished it Friday morning. I always like to let people know what I think of their works since I am a semi - retired fanfic writer myself.
Before I get to the actual review, I just want to say that like a lot of people, was devastated when I heard Megaman legends 3 was cancelled. I was so hyped for that game I wanted it so badly and I was, and still am so disappointed that it never came out. I always hold out hope that someday it will be released, but I'm not holding my breath.
but sometimes in life, things are not exactly what we hope them to be.perhaps Megaman legends 3 would not have been as great of a game as I thought it would have been. Perhaps all the hype was just that.
Which brings me to the story. In the opening description, you say that this isn't the Mega Man legends 3 that most people would have wanted to see, but you don't always get what you want.
In a way, that description sums up how I think a lot of people would feel about the story. I think a lot of people would have expected a typical story that would have generally followed what be accepted plot line of MML 3 would have been. But this is not what we got in the end. There was no mysterious hero raising up a gang to be a positive influence on Klickelan Island or the return of a certain boy in blue.
Instead, all these expectations were blown up. Quite literally.
I myself was fairly surprised when I learned that certain people were gone.
it was a promise that intrigued me. It also kept me interested and motivated me to keep listening.
I liked the Bonnes since I first met them nearly 20 years ago,But I never saw them as particularly deep characters. Just kind of like bubbling comic relief to be honest. But you gave them new life in the story. Really made me like them a whole lot more. Bon and his suit always mystified me, but you gave a pretty believable explanation for it.
I never thought of Tron as an author, but I guess that stress can really make you seek some kind of outlet to just get away from it all.
And Teisel. you really added a whole different dimension to him in this. Poor guy.I like how you really made him human and even though he had been through so much, he was able to pull through with the help of his friends.
And those friends. I really like what you did with Pic. In a way, you almost reminded me of Data from TNG. I remember reading that he was supposed to have spoken a breath Manor, but you completely submitted that in the story. Max is the trail in this I felt pretty good too. Didn’tparticularly care for Aero’s blue hair, but at least you didn't make her into the stereotyped empty headed anime girl that she likely would have been in the actual MML 3. Also, I thought Grill’s character could have been done a little better. Sorry, I couldn't resist making a grilling joke in there.
I like the overall tone of the story. dark, but with enough humor and positivity to counteract that tone. Too much dark stuff will makeme depressed, but too much silliness just annoys me. I think you struck a perfect balance here. And a little bit of action splash adventure never hurts either. I guess that's kind of the tone that the legends series has as I come to think of it. Dark, but funny.
In a way, I see the story as almost an allegorical representation of the fans coming to terms with the cancellation of Megaman legends 3.it seemed as if the blue bomber was about to make the comeback a lifetime, only to have those dreams blown up in our faces. since that day, we've all tried coping with that tragedy. Some have made games, others have written stories telling of how they would have liked to have seen the game.
I guess in some way, we're all like Teisel and some of the other characters in here. We have lost something we greatly loved and have been trying to get it back or at least get it to what we would like it to have been. This element is one of the reasons I like this story. Through the character’s pain, we too feel that pain. And in like them, we find peace in the end. Maybe not the way we would like it to be, but at least we get an ending of some sort. Some kind of resolution that leaves us happy. At least, most of us.
However, just as we don't always get what we want, there were a few things that I feel should have been handled differently.
my major problem with the story is in the last 8 chapters. I felt that you had some pretty good ideas, but it just felt like more time could have been spent on developing the last major twist in the plot.
while I did enjoy that two chapter sequence near the end with the Bonnes, I felt that the bringing back of a certain character could have been done a little better. While I liked that particular angle the story took and found his intentions very believable, I would have liked to have seen his character undergo a Redemption arc of sorts. Perhaps that would Have been a bit too cliched and would have took something away from the story, but I really feel that if that had happened it would have given some characters some sense of closure. It doesn't seem fair to me that one character finds peace and others are left empty handed.
a minor problem I had with the story was also the absence of a certain character. I think we all know who he is. That mystery man I talked about earlier. It would have been nice to have had a bit more information of why he left.
but I suppose that this all goes back to the main star that this story revolves around: we can't always get what we want.
Those minor issues aside, I really like your story.I felt you did a good job in the development of most of the characters, I really enjoyed the tone and I liked the symbolism regarding loss and acceptance. that element in of itself gave me a deep appreciation for the story.
We don't always get what we want in the end, but at least in this I feel those who read it will get something good.
my apologies if this review sounds of it scrambled and the spelling maybe a bit off at times. My phone's dictation app only work so well.
