Recently discovered that industry favorites for 3D modelling are two programs, Maya and 3DS Max. Is there any real difference between them? What makes one better than the other?

I have no idea. I use Blender. It's free and has a bunch of tutorials all over the web. What kind of stuff do you want to work on? Blender is free, so it might be a good idea to start with it before laying down tons of money on those programs. From what I've seen, you can do just about anything in Blender that you can do in those programs, and the interface has become much more friendly since the 2.5x series came out.
As for differences, I don't think any of these three are significantly better than the other. This one is faster for doing that and this one has a better interface for doing the other thing.
