Hover boots do sound a lot more appropriate than the jet pack. I was so disappointed when I learned that the Hover Shoes didn't actually grant flight. It would make sense to use them for that purpose, for ruin exploration and whatnot. Based on my experience, they'd be horrible for combat, though. Volnutt's such a target in the; he really shines when he's on the ground (thanks to his tumble-dodge).

No duh: Volnutt wouldn't be able to use the Hover Boots for too long anyhow, given the limited refractor energy necessary to power it, and the speed attained wouldn't be worth waiting for a few minutes in the midst of a fight.
Swimming would definitely be possible without a special item, but only for a limited amount of time when you take oxygen flow into account. An item could be equipped to allow longer periods of time spent swimming underwater, and water pressure could also be a factor, quickening the rate of oxygen loss which eventually leads to you losing health.

@swimming You have an item that allows you to be underwater indefinitely in MML2. That could just make a comeback, eh. Hover Boots make more sense but for that very reason, they're a boring idea. I would prefer a jetpack to Hover Boots because it's crazy to imagine. (So crazy it just might work)

You can't always get what you wish for. That's why I'm skeptical about what direction the new team will take the DASH series with for the new installment--but still, Hover Boots: they'll turn you into Astro Boy, which would be great as well.
@swimming: That works well then. We just need controls and that should be the end of it.

Nevermind, I agree with ZombieVolnutt, jetpacks are definitely much flashier, and just add to the awesomeness of it all.
As for swimming, I still don't think it's a necessary thing.
And besides, that armor does look rather hard to stay afloat in, and what about the areas that are supposedly really high up to reach? Like in Legends 2? Swimming would take out the challenge factor of moving through the ruins.

Glide Shoes akin to the effect of holding a Jakko in MML2 (with the jump button suppressed) would be neat, too. You'd have the jump length of a skate-boosted jump combined with the maneuverability of a normal jump.

It could take the challenge out of ruins to an extent, unless the dev. team decides to be jerks and involve current flow to play a big part in underwater ruins. Then we're in trouble. If the water temple from Orcarina of Time is any indication, it'll be a trip.
The only bad thing I could think of swimming from the top of my head would be complications in combat. That is, unless, they find a way to allow Trigger to maneuver swiftly underwater.

Like I said, new mechanics for getting to places = more places you can add and more variety you can add to a map. As for the Jet Pack and the Hover Shoes, both basically do the same function, so they could just prompt you in-game for which variant you'd like to have--no big deal.
And as for swimming in Volnutt's armor, well...that also makes you wonder how he jumps so well!
@nozumo: That would be bad if so, but then that's just an issue of level design. I was thinking that swimming would be for side-areas once more, and would its own perks. You wouldn't be able to use fire weapons underwater, and maneuvering would be tough unless we had yet another move, such as using the propulsion power from the Jet Skates to go faster.

You'd have the jump length of a skate-boosted jump combined with the maneuverability of a normal jump. No offense or anything, but in my opinion, that sounds like too passive a maneuver to really be useful for much, not to mention that you can't exactly maneuver through the air as well as you would with a jet pack. @general Specific-The gravity is less when you're underwater. Roll even states that sometime during your excavation in the Nino Ruins. It's similar to Elysium's gravity change system, just slower since it's underwater. Although I still don't really like the idea of Megaman swimming much. Then again, classic Megaman in Megaman 8 could swim, despite being around 250lbs or so...hm. By the way, does anyone remember the Aqua Jets? Those might play a role again in underwater maneuvering.

Megaman swimming isn't something he should be doing by conventional standards, which is why I think it could work in a DASH game, if only due to a change of context. Opinions, indeed.

Well then, my opinion is...
Let Megaman swim around all he wants when he's chilling at the pool with Roll and Yuna.
How's that for context?
Otherwise, I think it changes too much from the original gameplay.

Fair deal, but I think in terms of design most of the time, and I love intricate level design. Overall, I just want dungeons to be far more interesting than they have been in the first two games, and doing that requires visual ingenuity and clever design--which is why adding water segments could offer an interesting challenge.

Alright then, if some of you really want swimming to appear in water-submerged ruins, what would the controls be like? Repeatedly press the jump button to stay afloat?

The Hydrojets could be reconfigured for swimming capabilities, now that I think of it. Maybe it could allow you to reach things that are higher up; stuff that you couldn't get to by jumping normally. An underwater air-dash would be a cool idea, too.

It would be like in Mario, guys: pressing up and holding/tapping A would propel you up, and the other way pressing down. I thought this stuff would be simple to you guys.
Actually, screw that--I haven't played in a very long time. Unless Volnutt somehow became buoyant underwater, then these controls wouldn't work.
