I read that the protagonist trainers are not ten, but about fifteen years old this time around. Their designs are pretty cool too. Same can't be said for the starter Pokemon...

I thought they were around 17 or so in the earlier renditions. 10 is ridiculous. No clillun o' 10 would survive in dat wildaness o' deirs. Don't know where that accent came from. Anyways, what I think would be REALLY COOL for a new Pokemon game is a deviation from their now vanilla pudding formula. Instead of starting out meeting the prof, walking out of town which you're not supposed to do, getting your first mon, then proceeding to go through all the areas collecting HMs and meeting higher level Pokemon, try something new. I'd like a character that starts out with a set of several Pokemon and items and stuff, in a town that is not a dead end and basically anything else that could be randomized upon game start to increase re-playability or remove linearity of plot.

Wow, I'm usually never picky with new Pokémon designs but I'm really not liking these starters. The only one that has the slightest potential is the polar bear/otter.
So apparently there's going to be a full 3D city and pkmn sprites are going to have their own idling and attacking animations. This is getting more interesting, but I'm still not sure if it's worth getting them. They don't seem to have changed it too radically for my taste.

Full Pokedex available for your viewing pleasure
I like some of these new designs that they came up with, specifically the polar bear! I'll admit that I'm not too impressed with the starters, but IMO some of the other ones completely make up for it!

Guess it's time to revive this thread now that the game's out, huh? I haven't had this many tough decisions to make in a Pokémon game since the first game came out. First I couldn't decide if I wanted to buy the game in the first place, then I couldn't choose between Black and White... @__@ (consulted a magic eight ball and a coin flip for those... :37:) Then I couldn't decide between the male and female character; I just really don't like that male character's design.. it feels so “off.” And then I couldn't decide on my starter Pokémon. :06: But those headaches are over for the time being. Not that it really matters, but I chose Pokémon Black Version, playing as (yes) the female character, and for my starter I went with teh pig, on account of the fact that no one else is going to choose him. (poor little guy) Thankfully (read: “thankfully”) the game doesn't have many other tough choices early on, like which wild Pokémon to capture and bring into my team. Between home and the first gym there sure aren't a lot of wild Pokémon. Only three I've found in the grass, plus my starter, plus one elemental monkey puts my party at five so far. (Tepig, Lillipup, Patrat, Purrloin and Pansage) But that's OK I suppose. (EDIT: Man a lot more appear once you get further out though. o.o) It took me a long time to get them all raised and leveled evenly. And even then, after they were all hovering around level 11, I got pwned by the first Gym Leader. (friggin' Work Up) :01: Ah well. But other than that I'm loving the little differences. Like speech bubbles point toward characters. And Pokémon Center/Marts. (Whose inventory apparently changes based on how many badges you have? That's great.) And the big differences. Like the full 3D environments, and the new style battle animations. And the new places and the new Pokémon and so on (and on and on). Honestly so far it feels sufficiently different that it almost feels like a completely different game, but that may just be me. But yeah. I haven't gotten very far. I did juuust manage to snag that first badge last night before I crashed. I'm trying to make this game last a while. It's got to keep me busy while I finish filling up the pages of my Pokédex in Soul Silver. It's gonna be pretty slow going for a while, I think. I hope so anyway.

I agree with Pitch (on the bumping and opinions and such). Honestly, after getting post game, ALL of the trainers jump 10 levels ahead of you, so right now Gen V for me is at a standstill till I can migrate a few pokemon over for breeding and EV purposes. Then comes the whole Battle Subway (equivilant to the frontier) deal. and *shudder* :18: Pitch picking the Pig is a good thing in my eyes. I have the smug lizard, and BC has that otter thingy, so we'll be able to trade eggs! Hells yeaaaah and stuff. By the way, I can do it. I'll become half gen IV and half gen V competitive battler. This I swayur! Most of my review (and thoughts) of the game(s) can be found here.Cheers to pokemon!

Aye aye on that one. That was ultimately the reason I chose the fire pig. Because no one else appeared to want to. Same as the reason I chose Black Version over White Version. (Only to discover that several of my relatives bought Black Version...) Seemed like teh pig was going to be as hard to find in Black/White as Chikorita was in Heart Gold/Soul Silver. (thanks again, fAB!)I've caught about nineteen Pokémon, but I'm about to move out and explore to get a bunch more of them very soon. I haven't quite made up my mind one way or the other, but I might try to complete the Unova Pokédex. (Ain't no way in hell I'm touching the National Dex again) I figure taking the time to try to fill up the UnovaDex will help me pass the time while I'm waiting to finish my National Dex in Pokémon Soul Silver. So it should be pretty phun. If I do decide to fill the Pokédex, I'll be following a little ruleset I came up with. It's mostly basic common sense kind of stuff, but I've had to explain it to more than a couple people, so I might as well share it with you... Pitch's Pokédex Challenge
1. All Pokémon captured in the process of filling the Pokédex must be 100%, un-debatably legitimate. Illegitimate Pokémon include any and all Pokémon generated by means outside the games or outside the games' intended use, and any event Pokémon obtained outside of official Pokémon events.
2. All Pokémon that can be captured by the player must be captured by the player. Alternatively, in any set of Pokémon obtained by similar means of increasing difficulty, the player must obtain the Pokémon which is most difficult to obtain thus.
3. When the player trades for Pokédex pages, he may only do so with someone he knows personally, whether online or in real life. Seeking trades on random message boards/etc, obtaining necessary Pokémon through the GTS or anything of a similar nature is strictly prohibited.
4. (Optional) Pokémon trades should generally be considered balanced. In exchange for necessary Pokémon, the player should offer up something valuable of his own, such as: a Pokémon exclusive to the player's version of the game, a rare or useful item, or a Pokémon with special properties (egg moves, shininess, perfect IVs, etc.)
5. (Optional) Necessary Pokémon should be obtained as soon as is convenient for the player, in the course of the main game. Pokémon hunting should not be a task saved for after completing the game's storyline/etc, for maximum enjoyability. PITCH, 2011
I strongly encourage players to follow these or a similar ruleset if they attempt to fill the Pokédex as I have. It really does make the process far more enjoyable than rushing to get it completed by whatever means possible. Cheaters get no bragging rights, and bragging rights are about all you can get for completing a Pokédex, so what's the rush? Where's the phun in that? I sure as hell don't know. (Cheating ruined many games for me as a kid)

“So how's your POKéDEX coming? I already caught 40 kinds, pal! Different kinds are everywhere! Crawl around in grassy areas!”. . . I've been having a hard time finding time to play this game as much as I'd like, but I just hit my 40th Pokémon milestone, with three badges so far. It's been quite a phun hunt. Today I went after Victini. For anyone who doesn't know the Liberty Pass is available over Mystery Gift already. (and is available 'til at least the end of the month) This allows you to go to Liberty Island and catch yourself a Victini. So anyway, I went to get me mine, and when I got into the battle I panicked because I realized I only had a dozen Pokéballs or so, and Victini is as hard to capture as any Legendary. I hadn't realized this fact until I'd whittled him down and put him to sleep. (Without saving before-hand — silly me. :37:) So I crossed my fingers, threw a ball, and I caught him. On my first toss. In a standard Pokéball. I was shocked. I am a lucky, lucky man. (My goal is to avoid using Dusk Balls/etc. for Legendaries this time around.) I also went hunting for several Pokémon in the desert today, and evolved a bunch too! ( Zebstrika! <3) Things are getting interesting! ;D Good Luck Pitch, and I shall be accepting your Pokédex Challenge when I get White. Hey, thanks! Good luck, dude, and have phun.

Victini certainly was a curious little fellow. At first, I was shocked to see that he was only level 15 for starters (since I'm at the post game point) and I go all "aw crap how am I gonna be able to get his hp down?" (The fast ball only clicked once) Then I noticed he knew Endure, so I sent out the level 55 Emolga for Light Screen, and when Vict used Endure, I had Emolga use Encore, and one Aerobics after that, Victini was ripe for the picking, so I started pelting him with Nest Balls. None of them were doing all that well (one clicked 3 times) but eventually one of Victini's Quick Attacks left him paralyzed, and the next Nest Ball snagged him. All together, it took about what... 8-10 of them? At least Pitch saved some pokedollars... :07: It's good that your bad luck seems to have diminished! I was actually worried for you... You get a whole lot more good luck from Gen V than you do from IV nowadays, eh?

Protip: If you kill Victni, he'll just reappear and you can fight him again as if nothing ever happened. Like Mikey, I was post-game and had no way to whittle his HP down. Once I learned that he had Endure, I just attacked and prayed that he would use the move. Got it right on my second try and nabbed him in a Dusk Ball.
@pitch: If you're not using Dusk Balls on Legendaries, are you at least going to use Ultra Balls? I can't imagine trying to catch every single one in a standard Poke Ball. Though since they brought the Dive Ball back (my favorite!), I'll probably use it in place of a regular Pokeball for my favorite Pokemon.
At any rate, I'll be trying to complete the PokeDex (Unova only) as well; I've got about 77 now as is. Consider me signed up for the 'Pitch Challenge' as well!

At first, I was shocked to see that he was only level 15 for starters (since I'm at the post game point) and I go all "aw crap how am I gonna be able to get his hp down?" This was a bit of a relief for me when I went to nab him. Right as I started the battle I wondered if he might be leveled way above me, making things ridiculously difficult so early in the game. I think it's kind of cool that they made it this way, though. Especially for an event that's available from Day One. @pitch: If you're not using Dusk Balls on Legendaries, are you at least going to use Ultra Balls? I can't imagine trying to catch every single one in a standard Poke Ball. I haven't quiiite made up my mind on that one. All I know is I got really tired of seeing all my Legendary Pokémon in Dusk Balls in Soul Silver. I may try for all Pokéballs, but I'm going to need to have a lot more Pokedollars for that. (If I'm feeling really ambitious I may go for teh Premier Balls) Hey, cool. You're almost halfway there already. Good luck! You know what else I'm loving about this game so far? The spriiiites. :13: I could have some phun with these. Nothing's immediately grabbed me quite like they did in Soul Silver, though. Some of those Gen IV trainers were just begging to be turned into Legends characters. Hmm...

In terms of Pokemon catching, the main difference that I've noticed between Black/White and the older generations is that you don't really have to do a lot in the way of evolving to get PokeDex pages. Quite a few fully evolved Pokemon can be caught on their own through either shaky grass spots or high grass. There are some exceptions to the rule of course; some who evolve by level-up still do have to be evolved manually, as well as the ones that evolve by stones or happiness (gotta love Luxury Balls). Still, it's interesting that there's a lot more actual catching to do here than it has been previously. I kinda like the change in pace, myself.
Also, I really never knew how handy Quick Balls could be. Tossed one at the start of a battle with a certain legendary and got it on the first try!
Unova Dex status: 93

Regarding da Pitch Challenge, I think I could easily pull it off. Starting with 3X in the pokedex, I easily (rock) climbed my way up to 7X in less than a day, since I'm at the post game point. So far the only real peaches I had were trying to find a Cinccino (to save a shiny stone) and finding the other two elemental monkeys. (Honestly, when you want a PanSEAR, the other two just seemingly anger and taunt you when they appear.) Another reason (and the main one, really.) is that I need to learn their freakin names. Honestly, I, like most pokemaniacs, can name off any Gen IV (or earlier) pokemon right off the bat, and I need to get familiar with Gen V if I'm ever to hope to pull it off again. So, since my progress is coming along swimmingly, it looks like I'm within the parameters of the Pitch Challenge. edit: I'm probably gonna wind up murdering every Audino I see from now on, and I'm sure nobody blames me. :15:

This. . . Regarding da Pitch Challenge, I think I could easily pull it off. Starting with 3X in the pokedex, I easily (rock) climbed my way up to 7X in less than a day, since I'm at the post game point. . . . is why there's this little optional “rule” in the Pitch Challenge™. 5. (Optional) Necessary Pokémon should be obtained as soon as is convenient for the player, in the course of the main game. Pokémon hunting should not be a task saved for after completing the game's storyline/etc, for maximum enjoyability. Indeed, hunting in the post game is neither difficult, nor is it interesting. And quite frankly, it's not very much phun either. Just a lot of backtracking. Not the idea. But hey, that's pretty cool anyway. I finally gave in and went to get my fourth badge, with 52 Pokémon collected thus far. Evolving a bunch of them was quite a challenge, but it was worth it. I also hunted down all those shaky grass Pokémon. About the only other Pokémon I could've gotten were either Stone evolutions (I'm hesitant to waste these, since I don't know how you get more of them yet), or teh fully-evolved form of my starter. And some evolutions that take place in the 30's, but my team's barely that far along. I'm a bit surprised at how easy the Gym Leaders all have been. The Striaton Gym only had level 14 or so, so the jump to Level 20 at Nacrene City hurt, but I haven't been under-leveled since then. Castelia City's Gym only got as high as level 23 and Nimbasa City's Gym only had one level 27. I'm in the lower-mid 30s right now, so I'm guessing the Gym after the next one might be a challenge? ... ah well. Snagged a Ducklett on my way over the bridge and called it a night with 53 Pokémon and 4 Badges so far.
