Oh, look. Now you have me posting in this thread. Anyways. Necroposting usually applies to a thread that has gone without a post for a number of years. I think one year is slightly tolerable, but you'd need a pretty good reason to revive it. Anything higher, don't bother posting. Don't even let the idea cross your mind. If the thread died a few years ago, there's probably a good reason for it.

It's not really bad if it's an objective and straightforward thread like "What's your favorite color?" or "Roll vs. Tron" or "Do you have any pets?" unless you're deliberately replying to a post made more than a year ago. If you want to start a discussion with a person who hasn't been here in five years, that's...really weird. Especially if they're a guest. I also wouldn't revive any kind of major interpersonal discussion that went on in 2006 or something ridiculous like that. Or a rule announcement from 2006.
